As a result of intensified archaeological activity in northern Belize, and specifically the work of the joint British Museum-Cambridge University research project (directed by Norman Hammond), a variety of new data have been obtained on the prehistory of this region. Of the many sites that have been mapped, tested, or otherwise investigated in the past few years, one stands out as a major center of ancient Maya lithic technology. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by P. Porat and N. Yadin, with the assistance of Y. Vatkin (surveying) as well as students and volunteers from Geva and Mesilot.

In 1955, an archaeological excavation was conducted at Tel Qasile in Tel Aviv (map ref. unknown), under the direction of J. Kaplan. The archive file records the exposure of a kiln for ceramic vessels' production, in the vicinity of which pottery sherds were recovered and dated to the tenth century BCE.

In 1976, a further excavation was carried out at Tel Qasile (map ref. 1806/6675), likewise under the direction of J. Kaplan. The archive file contains an excavation report of a Middle Bronze Age burial cave, together with a detailed inventory of the finds.

Fifty-two archaeological sites in the vicinity of nine projects proposed by the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, in Starr County, Texas, are described and evaluated. It was determined that no further investigation need be made at 29 of these sites, whereas controlled collections and testing is necessary at 18 sites, and excavation is recommended at an additional five sites.

This paper is concerned with the last several hundred years of the prehistoric period in the southern part of Texas. The earlier human occupation of this region, extending back perhaps 11,000 years, has been summarized elsewhere (Hester 197la). The Paleo-Indian period is represented by scattered surface finds of Clovis and Fol6om projectile points, and by a variety of "Late Paleo-Indian" point styles, such as Plainview, Scottsbluff, Golondrina, Angostura and Merserve.. The following Archaic era is poorly defined, although there are numerous surf ace sites and an abundance of chipped stone artifacts (cf. Weir 1956; Hester, White and White 1969).

In 1975, an excavation was conducted in Netivot (map ref. 1607/5925), following the exposure of a cemetery which was damaged during construction work. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiques and Museums, was directed by D. Alon. Many cist graves were discerned in the area, that were smashed and damaged by the bulldozers and tractors. The lids and walls of the graves were shattered or dragged by the vehicles, their contents spilled or plundered. All the graves found were covered with Eocene limestone slabs, one of them also contained marine sandstone slabs. The graves were dated to the …
