A history of ownership of Walker Ranch is included. Archaeological investigations of three structures and associated artifacts are described. An appendix discusses the faunal material from the site.

During February through April 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an intensive archaeological survey at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Llano and Gillespie Counties, Texas. A summary of the 120 newly recorded sites is presented, along with more detailed information on shovel testing, auger testing and two excavated sites. Data from faunal and constant volume analyses at the excavated sites are described and tabulated. Appendices include documentation of a local collection, an artifact inventory from an earlier survey, and an analysis of phytoliths from one of the excavated sites.

A detailed history of the family and the site and a complete architectural recording and analysis are included. Archaeological investigations of standing structures and sites of former structures are described. The results of the investigations are discussed in relation to archaeological investigations at other rural sites. Appendices on phosphate testing and detailed architectural drawings of the Schob house are included.

Three Spantsh missions, San Francisco Solano, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo, were established near the Rio Grande at present Guerrero, northeastern Coahuila, during the years 1700-1703. Remnants of at least 88 distinctively named Indian groups at various times came to live at one or more of these missions. In 1975- 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas San Antonio, supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kathryn O'Connor Foundation, conducted archaeological excavations at two of these missions, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo. In September 1979, a salvage excavation was conducted in the courtyard of the youth hostel at Tel Ḥai under the direction of G. Edelstein. Burial caves were exposed after being damaged during the quarrying of a pit for the construction of a shelter. According to the excavation diary, three burial caves were documented; in one of them, two loculi were identified, along with five additional loculi. The finds from the caves and the loculi included pottery and glass vessels dating to the Roman period.

Reporting and preliminary testing of these sites was completed so as to be i.n compliance with Public Law 89-670(The Department of Transportation Act of 1966), 36 CFR 60, 36 CFR 8·00, and the Memorandum of Understanding between the State. During a routine archaeological reconnaissance of the proposed right- of-way of F.M. 3298 a site was indicated between centerline stations 143 + 00 and 145 + 00 on the basis of the recovery of a dart point and a dart point fragment. Consequently, a preliminary test was conducted during the week beginning May 1, 1978, to determine the nature of the site and to formulate, if necessary, a program of excavation and mitigation . The discovery and preliminary test investigations were made i n accordance with Title 36, C.F.R., Part 800 Procedures for the Protection of Historic and Cultural Properties.
