Dislocations: Participatory Media With Refugees In Malta And Ireland, Anthony Haughey Jan 2010

Dislocations: Participatory Media With Refugees In Malta And Ireland, Anthony Haughey

Books/Book chapters

Malta is located in the Mediterranean Sea between North Africa and Europe, a receiving country for significant inward migration. For most migrants the goal is to reach mainland Europe. However, every year a significant number of smuggler boats inadvertently drift into Maltese territorial waters often in severe distress, resulting in rescue by the Maltese Navy and an uncertain future.

Whilst working in Malta I was struck by the similarities between Ireland and Malta. Both islands’ are peripheral locations on the western and southern edges of Europe. Historically both countries have experienced significant outward migration of its citizens who live all …

The Construction Of Locative Situations: Locative Media And The Situationist International, Recuperation Or Redux?, Conor Mcgarrigle Jan 2010

The Construction Of Locative Situations: Locative Media And The Situationist International, Recuperation Or Redux?, Conor Mcgarrigle

Articles

A trend exists within locative media art of invoking the practices of the Situationist International (SI) as an art historical and theoretical background to contemporary practices. It is claimed that locative media seeks to re-enchant urban space though the application of locative technologies to develop novel and experimental methods for navigating, exploring and experiencing the city. To this end, SI concepts such as psychogeography and the techniques of detournement and the de ́rive (drift) have exerted considerable influence on locative media practices, but questions arise as to whether this constitutes a valid contemporary appropriation or a recuperative co-option, serving to …

Put The Bunny Down, And Other Short Stories, Jacqueline Mersereau Lincoln Jan 2010

Put The Bunny Down, And Other Short Stories, Jacqueline Mersereau Lincoln

LSU Master's Theses

I have always been interested in stories, and parts of every story I have heard has shaped who I am as an adult. If I’m not telling others an anecdote of a moment turned into an adventure, I am inventing adventures to tell myself. Three characters developed from the mixture of the stories I heard from true life, books and television, and what I made up for myself. Originally I simply intended these characters of a little girl, a rabbit, and a few raccoons to interact with one another and show moments of individual stories—like illustrations in an anthology that …

Site Unseen, David Christopher Carpenter Jan 2010

Site Unseen, David Christopher Carpenter

LSU Master's Theses

Site Unseen is a large-scale installation of seventy-three brightly screen-printed and painted house forms. The houses stack and interlock with one another, creating clusters of towers and archways. The forms appear to grow into one another, physically connecting the homes. Each house is printed with images of materials in various states: raw, processed and waste. These materials represent the cycle of community’s rise and fall. Beyond examining the construction of community, Site Unseen explores a moment when trust or foundation is lost in a community. In the center of the community is a gaping, spherical void. This void represents the …

Longing: Places I Desired And Couldn't Find, Ashley Kathleen Bell Jan 2010

Longing: Places I Desired And Couldn't Find, Ashley Kathleen Bell

LSU Master's Theses

Ephemeral. Nostalgic. Absence. Transient. Transformation. Movement. Temporary. Skeleton. Momentary. Fleeting. Landscape. Cityscape. Southern Landscape. Baton Rouge. Louisiana. I paint the feeling of wearing time and the earth on my skin. The scars on the landscapes tell stories and truths marked by past generations. The imagery in my work is inspired by local places and reveals the wavering condition of the natural landscape and civilizations. Everyday places and repetitive acts make up the components of miracles. As I create, I examine ideas beyond the current condition of a specific location. Through my imagination I bring the unseen into the artworks. The …

Becoming: Transformation And The Body, Melissa Mcdonald Graves Jan 2010

Becoming: Transformation And The Body, Melissa Mcdonald Graves

LSU Master's Theses

My intention is to focus on human flesh concentrating both on its imperfections as well as its beauty. Beauty is seen in the marks of age and imperfection as time forms the deepest wrinkle to the darkest mark. Cycles come in and out growing dark to light as cleansing takes place. Veils of material cover and hide inner feelings and thoughts as a shape unfolds itself in my hands. The forms soften and grow from one small stitch to a more complete shape. Successive layers of marks, represent hidden truths and human growth through the passage of time. Memories are …

Over The Rim Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, Jungrim Yea Jan 2010

Over The Rim Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, Jungrim Yea

LSU Master's Theses

My paintings are about the short span of human existence in comparison with the rhythms of the eternal cosmos based on Christianity. To illustrate this, I explored the icons of the moon (soul) and the iceberg (physical body). The painting technique used is the juxtaposition of passages of heavy impasto with thin glazes of earthly monochromatic colors, which represent time and age. I am seeking a depth of spiritual space. My works consists of ten large-scale oil paintings on masonite/canvas, and a series of small oil paintings on panels. In order to represent the unpredictable fate of human beings, I …

Western Interpretation Of The Other: How The Perpetuation Of Negative Stereotypes Against Blacks Have Shaped Our Culture, Katrina M. Andry Jan 2010

Western Interpretation Of The Other: How The Perpetuation Of Negative Stereotypes Against Blacks Have Shaped Our Culture, Katrina M. Andry

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis examines the history and nature of stereotypes propagated against blacks from the African Exploration to present day. Therefore by understanding the nature of these stereotypes one can better understand the consequences they’ve had on the black community and they’ve helped to maintain racism in America. This thesis further investigates the media’s role in maintaining racist attitudes towards blacks and how separating people in categories ranking from superior which consequentially breeds inferiority is advantageous to the majority rule in America. In conclusion the problem presented in this thesis has no concrete solution other than the viewer’s perspective after engaging …

Believing Is Seeing, Robin Akkerman Jan 2010

Believing Is Seeing, Robin Akkerman

LSU Master's Theses

Fantasy art is often described as being connected to the imagination. My work defines fantasy themes in combination with modern culture and real life experiences. During the creative process I have overcome a struggle with composition development and color relationships. Paintings mimic a puzzle strategy. I come up with a basic idea by inserting and taking away imagery in order for the whole image to be cohesive. Subject matter includes women of different cultures in dress, animals, pattern, sweets, and childhood experiences from the 80’s. My characters are a personification of myself as I often dream of being dressed up …

Branding The Bear, Veni Harlan

LSU Master's Theses

Harlan, Veni S, B.F.A., Louisiana State University, 1981 Master of Fine Arts, Fall Commencement, 2010 Major: Graphic Design Branding the Bear Dissertation directed by Professor Rod Parker Pages in dissertation, 64. Words in abstract, 350. ABSTRACT Currently due to successful restoration efforts, the Louisiana Black Bear sub-species is rebounding. Correspondingly this increase in numbers accompanies the rise of human-bear conflict. Fiction, misinformation, resentment, and devaluation of the bear as a valuable asset stand to undermine the tremendous strides made by multiple public and private agencies over the course of twenty years. Discovery revealed a lack of knowledge by the public …

Recollection/Re-Collection: A Re-Positioning Of Artificial Nature In The Natural World, Martha Epp-Carter Dec 2009

Recollection/Re-Collection: A Re-Positioning Of Artificial Nature In The Natural World, Martha Epp-Carter

All Theses

ABSTRACT
In this body of work I explore the division between our experiences with nature in a controlled environment versus the less frequent experience of true nature. I concern myself with the distance we create for ourselves by diminishing our interactions with nature, making them convenient, not messy or intrusive. I also attempt to resensitize the viewer to his or her own conscious or unconscious response to nature. By setting up situations that utilize both real and artificial objects, images and materials, I place the viewer in a relationship with the work that requires thoughtful attention.
Through the creation of …

Deviant, Courtney Richards Dec 2009

Deviant, Courtney Richards

All Theses

ABSTRACT
I create portraits and self-portraits that explore the dualities of the western human condition, namely the deviant and the ideal, the refined and the unrefined, and the perfect and the flawed. Drawing on personal experiences with people considered outsiders or social deviants, I construct figures that embody the conflicting ideas inherent in these dualities. I explore these conflicts in drawings that are constructed with marks and shapes that are both basic and refined, and in photographs that use analytic documentation to describe social turmoil. I reference artists both contemporary and historical, such as Egon Schiele, Robert Longo, Kathe Kollwitz, …

Physically And Viscerally Made, Jenny Hutchinson Dec 2009

Physically And Viscerally Made, Jenny Hutchinson

All Theses

Through the mediums of painting and drawing, I seek to create a figure that communicates particular states of being relative to contemporary conditions in society. Today we are individuals consumed by visual media and interconnectivity. I question -in wake of those conditions- how often we are self-aware. By living our lives through these two devices, we increasingly satisfy external needs, but may neglect internal needs. This situation, I believe, causes a dislocation of mind from body, and allows us to behave body-less. The distortion that we feel viscerally and live physically is actualized through the paint and drawing mediums. An …

Showcase (Concerns Of The Southern Man: From Gatlinburg To Kaohsiung City), Samuel Davis Dec 2009

Showcase (Concerns Of The Southern Man: From Gatlinburg To Kaohsiung City), Samuel Davis

All Theses

ABSTRACT
One's daily life consists of collecting objects, images, ideas, fears and dreams. These items and concepts do not conjure themselves, but are selected like so many berries in a basket. I question what objects people choose to showcase in their homes, their trophies and shrines. These types of objects serve to validate their owner's beliefs and through their collection, elevate that person's status. In what items does one subconsciously invest their identity?
My work speaks to the value of the collected once transformed. In my practice I juxtapose ideals held separately and simultaneously about the value and import of …
