Most people know Barbie, a doll that conveys some values about culture and about the concept of women’s beauty. However, Barbie only represents one specific culture, which is Western culture. Different with Western culture, Eastern culture needs a doll who can represent their values. Then, Fulla appears as the representative of Eastern beauty. Fulla conveys some values about Eastern culture and about the new concept of women’s beauty which are different from Barbie. Fulla’s appearance here is thought can emphasize the cultural differences among the society, but it can give another choice to shape people’s new thought about the beauty …

Pronoun Production Order In A Gender-Neutral Language: A Single Case Study Of A Typically Developing Indonesian Child, Bernard A.J Jap
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Research in children with normal language development has shown that there is a certain order in the production and learning of pronominal forms. To one’s knowledge, there has yet to be a study on the pronoun development of Indonesian speaking children whose native language do not distinguish between the nominative-accusative form (e.g. in English, I/me – Indonesian, saya/saya) and at the same time being gender neutral (e.g. in English, he/she – Indonesian, dia/dia). The present study follows the personal pronoun development of a (Jakarta) Indonesian-speaking child from 24 months to 46 months of age.

Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
People today are more globalized than before, and most of them are now able to speak more than one language. It also happens among the English Literature students 2009 in Universitas Indonesia who are able to speak English in their daily conversation. This may lead to the phenomenon called code- mixing. However, this code-mixing focuses more on written communication in their social media’s status. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, the description of code- mixing itself according to the theory given by Wardhaugh (1986) and Hoffman (1991) and how it can be reflected into …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This paper examines the progress of identity transformation of Josephine Alibrandi and John Barton in the novel Looking for Alibrandi. Josephine and John come from different family backgrounds. Josephine comes from an Italian immigrant family who lives in suburban area, while, John Barton comes from a politician family in Australia. Although they come from different family backgrounds, they still have the same problems in their identities. Their desire to be seen as themselves in the society makes them intend to find their identity. The reason I intend to do a research in this novel because I think this novel is …

Most people desire to succeed. Even though every person may have a different standard of success, it is necessary to succeed in order to be satisfied with our lives. We also need to value our experiences. For example, a concept called the "10,000 hours rule" has been introduced in a book titled Outlier. According to this concept, anyone can excel at something if he or she chooses to spend 10,000 hours on it. Actually, one should not just spend this time but use it to be passionately and actively involved. The Beatles embodied such commitment. Before they became famous, they …
Andrew Bae Interview, Richard Park
Andrew Bae Interview, Richard Park
Asian American Art Oral History Project
Bio: While Andrew Bae is situated in Chicago, he has clients from all over the globe. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Andrew Bae picked up on the business of galleries after attending school and studying chemistry and worked as a chemist for several years. Although his gallery is in one of the more desirable locations of River North, he doesn't seem to carry that many artists. He prefers a limited selection of artists (around 10) as he feels there is more personal connection with his artists especially as a gallery owner. Though the business is changing, Andrew Bae …

Goldfield Studies, Dawn Roe

The dialogue within this essay serves as a response to the series, Goldfield Studies, a work itself prompted by the history and landscape of this eponymous region of Victoria, Australia. The imagery produced takes the form of paired and multiple still photographs and a digital video sequence, displayed in triple-projection. The discussion is framed by the artist’s introduction, which defines the project as a critical consideration of cultural memory in relation to the opposing perspectives of indigenous and colonial settler narratives, pastoral landscape representations, folklore and myth. A collaborative dialogue between an artist and art historian who share common research …
The Face Of Autism, Sarah Alger, Paul Adams
The Face Of Autism, Sarah Alger, Paul Adams
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I believe the best documentary photographs are those that evoke emotion and motivate people to take action. Although the Face of Autism project has only been displayed a few times so far, it has done both of these things. Furthermore, a website is currently being created to display the photographs and I am working on displaying the prints in more public galleries in the future.
Perception Of Forgery According To The Role Of Art, Courtney Mcwhorter, Dr. Martha Peacock
Perception Of Forgery According To The Role Of Art, Courtney Mcwhorter, Dr. Martha Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Originally, when I set out to begin this project my intent was to show ‘Art Forgery as an Art Form’, as the title of this project was originally called. However, the intent of my research was very broad, as I intended to discuss forgery’s role, its creation, the forger, and the merits of forgery. I soon realized that there was too much that needed to be said. Therefore, I decided to concentrate my efforts on the role of forgery, or its perception within the art world. In my research, I began noticing that the reception of forgeries has changed over …

Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen
Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
While obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Art, I spent a lot of my time during those six years of school running away. First finding the need to get out of Provo, then Utah, and eventually America. It resulted in a lot of adventures, stories, and long drives. It was during these long drives that I consistently ran into each one of these small Utah towns, classically consisting of a corner store, a post office, and a child being pulled on a radio flyer. One after another after another. Slow down to 30 and watch the old signs from shops past …

Portrait Of A Tree: Exhibit A, Hannah Wertz, Sunny Taylor
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Exhibit A is an explanation in four parts, of my attempt at knowing more about the Populus Tremulus (Aspen Tree). Eighteen months ago my experiments started shallow by painting portraits of the tree as seen in “Level One”. After six months the results were not leading my beyond surface physicality so I decided to try science. I represented this period by a white board, “Level Two”, covered in with written information about the tree collected over the last year from books, lectures, articles, professionals, botany, and environmental literature classes.

The Cultural Preservation Of Ecuador Through Art, Jason Harmon, Mark Graham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of my project was to research the indigenous cultures of Ecuador through art (painting, drawing, and photography). My hope was to bring a lot of visual reference home, and to create an art show that would inform its viewer of the rich cultural diversity of some of the many indigenous cultures found in the diverse climates and regions of Ecuador. I started out hoping to help others understand these different cultures, their ways of life, and how they live, but after a two and a half week journey through the jungles, mountains, and rain forests of Ecuador, I …

The Garifuna: A Nation Within Nations, Benjamin Petersen, Dr. Jared Johnson
The Garifuna: A Nation Within Nations, Benjamin Petersen, Dr. Jared Johnson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Garifuna are the descendents of West Africans brought to the Americas in the 1600s aboard slave ships. After a shipwreck in the Caribbean, they settled on the island of St. Vincent and mixed with the Carib Indians, creating a unique people and culture that thrived on spirituality, dance, music, language and tradition. Eventual land disputes with the British led to fierce battles, defeat and finally, deportation to the coast of Honduras. There, the Garifuna reestablished and adapted, eventually spreading along the coasts of present-day of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Today, an estimated 300,000 Garifuna live in Central America …

Provo’S Ghost Town, Bryan Hutchison, Peter Everett
Provo’S Ghost Town, Bryan Hutchison, Peter Everett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Provo’s Ghost Town project has been a constant developing project over the past year. It began with what I had originally proposed for the ORCA Grant—to do research on houses and to use that information to create a body of artwork dealing with buildings that have been torn down in Provo, and hold a show exhibiting the artwork. A body of artwork has been made, but is still in progress. There are 15 finished images to date made, with enough materials gathered to make another 15 the upcoming semester at the same size, and enough photographs collected through research to …

Forming A New Art In The Pacific Northwest: Studio Glass In The Puget Sound Region, 1970-2003, Marianne Ryder
Forming A New Art In The Pacific Northwest: Studio Glass In The Puget Sound Region, 1970-2003, Marianne Ryder
Dissertations and Theses
The studio glass movement first arose in the United States in the early 1950s, and was characterized by practitioners who wanted to divorce glass from its industrial associations and promote it as a fine arts medium. This movement began in a few cities in the eastern part of the country, and in Los Angeles, but gradually emerged as an art form strongly associated with the city of Seattle and the Puget Sound region. This research studies the emergence and growth of the studio glass movement in the Puget Sound region from 1970 to 2003. It examines how glass artists and …
