Imagination And Reality: Landscape And The Folk Culture Of Joseon Dynasty Korea, Matthew Finley Apr 2015

Imagination And Reality: Landscape And The Folk Culture Of Joseon Dynasty Korea, Matthew Finley

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The Five Peaks Screen of Korea’s Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) is one of the most iconic works of its time. Nevertheless, the remarkable visual impact and cultural significance of the Five Peaks Screen evades systematic scholarly study, partly because of its generic classification as folk art. In this paper, I will resituate the Five Peaks Screen in the artistic tradition of East Asian landscape painting. When considered in the context of literati painting traditions and relevant popular landscapes, it becomes clear that the design of the Five Peaks Screen coheres to traditional aesthetics to emphasize the ability of artwork to inform …

Digital Expressionism And Christopher Wheeldon’S Alice’S Adventures In Wonderland: What Contemporary Choreographers Can Learn From Early Twentieth-Century Modernism, Kelly Oden Apr 2015

Digital Expressionism And Christopher Wheeldon’S Alice’S Adventures In Wonderland: What Contemporary Choreographers Can Learn From Early Twentieth-Century Modernism, Kelly Oden

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

How can classical ballet adapt to a world that is in an ever more rapid state of flux? By uncovering an example of the kind of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration that contributed to the thriving artistic environment of the early twentieth century, a model for artistic success emerges. By examining modernism and Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in relation to Christopher Wheeldon’s groundbreaking 2011 ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a correlation between the success of the Ballets Russes and the success of Wheeldon is exposed. I argue that by applying the modernist practice of interdisciplinary interaction to his own productions, Wheeldon …

Horizons, Volume 30, Spring 2015, Sacred Heart University

Vistas (Horizons)

An interdisciplinary, multi-cultural journal celebrating the creativity of Sacred Heart University during the academic year 2014-2015.

This year’s issue of Horizons is titled “Limbo: A Collection of Liminal Spaces.” Life is one gigantic stage of transitions where we are in perpetual states of limbo, or luminality, a threshold between our previous selves and the new selves we are in the process of defining.

Nothing's Wrong, Christina Mesiti Apr 2015

Nothing's Wrong, Christina Mesiti

CGU MFA Theses

I adjust the edges of materials both physically and intellectually. I work with flexible containers. Physically, I push two or more materials together so that they can find their own form, their own edge. I pour the plaster into different kinds of flexible emptinesses like envelopes or discarded gift wrap so that the two materials can exercise their own material agency and vitality, the materials working with themselves and the space to decide their own inevitable shapes. I allow the pieces their own logic.

I want to level the space, the objects, and the viewer so that none of the …

Side By Side: An Exploration Of The Artistic Process And The Painted Surface, Jessie F. Sorvaag Apr 2015

Side By Side: An Exploration Of The Artistic Process And The Painted Surface, Jessie F. Sorvaag

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

By investigating the juxtaposition of the spiritual sacrifice between life and death, as well as discovering the capabilities of paint as a medium, I hoped to create a body of work that encourages thought and discovery of tension and conflict, both within the work and within the viewer. This project helped create an environment of thoughtful creation, research, and investigation that will continue to influence me beyond the completion of this semester. This work is as much about the viewer and their reaction, as it is about my own internal investigation into juxtaposition, conflict, and tension. Not only is the …

Line Language, Albert Avi Arenfeld Apr 2015

Line Language, Albert Avi Arenfeld

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I consider utility and beauty in the functional pots that I make. In making pottery I continue a history of typography as ornament and a tradition of making objects by hand. My designs are informed by my personal background as well as cultural and historic influences.

The pots that I make are inspired by anthropomorphic form and architectural structure. I reference the geometry of the human body as well as buildings seen in my travels to Japan and the Middle East. The internal structure of the pot is both bones and framing, the surface of the pot is both skin …

Stage V: A Visual Interpretation Of My Dreams, Timothy M. Arroyo Apr 2015

Stage V: A Visual Interpretation Of My Dreams, Timothy M. Arroyo

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Stage V: A Visual Interpretation of My Dreams is a project based on the visions of characters, which I have encountered during dream states. The title is derived from the fifth stage of sleep, also referred to as REM sleep for the stage in which dreaming occurs. This project has its basis in the psychology of dreams, and the interpretations of my own dreams. All imagery created for this project will be extracted from my personal dream journal entries, and my interpretations of them. I will photograph each element used in the final photographic illustrations, and I will use symbolism, …

Why Censor An Artist's Creativity?, Darrin Smith Apr 2015

Why Censor An Artist's Creativity?, Darrin Smith

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

Art is more than pain-ngs and figures, it’s a form of communica-on and a way to express one’s self. The censorship of ar-s-c crea-vity is the oppression of a group of people. In visual art, performance art, literature, comedy and in media are only a few examples where ar-sts have had their voice censored.

Water: Experience, Recognition, Conversance, Kristine O'Reilly Apr 2015

Water: Experience, Recognition, Conversance, Kristine O'Reilly

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The exhibition of the photographic work entitled, Water: Experience, Recognition, Conversance, is the culmination of the artist’s life-long interest in the natural environment. The title also infers a chronological description of how interest in the subject evolved as well as how this document and the exhibition has been constructed and curated.

The concept of the exhibition is to remind or provide a vehicle toward remembrance to those ephemeral instances that we as a species have all experienced. It is intended to incite a response or perhaps inspire an action or a reaction or just a renewed appreciation of one component …

Conscious Delusions, Judith K. Hanacek Apr 2015

Conscious Delusions, Judith K. Hanacek

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Views of the world come from watching, looking, and feeling emotional relationships between people, things, and places. This fabricated series establishes the willingness to believe the images are actual photographic records by combining subjects viewing a variety of images. Metaphorical narratives show a vision of the incongruent world. The engagement begins with a shadow or back of someone or thing looking into the frame. Color, texture, and form within produce a voyeuristic psychological and emotional response. The paradox is what pushes the edges of expectation. Synchronicity of the elements within the images thrust us into a surreal moment. Belief in …

Dear, Whoever You Are, I Don't Care Who You Are, Adrienne Smart Apr 2015

Dear, Whoever You Are, I Don't Care Who You Are, Adrienne Smart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I am an observer. I have always been an observer. I was the child who sat quietly with the adults at dinner parties, listening intently to conversations both literally and figuratively over my head. I was the child my mother could count on to repeat the details she forgot from the phone conversation she had with a friend earlier that day. I was the child who knew all the names of the neighbors, their dogs, the cars they drove, the gossip being spread about them, etc. I’ve always been collecting. But to anyone outside of my trusted circle, I was …
