What Am I Doing Again?, Megan Coonelly
Theses and Dissertations
My work explores notions of habits, chaos and distractions; present within my painting practice. Each painting I make begins with a routine that symbolizes the daily experiences of my life. My paintings reflect the constant thought stream of my mind. They reveal the constant of societal and cultural past and present; buried as deep in our minds as a prayer or hymn ready to burst out at any moment. By referencing and exploring pop culture and pop art, I engage in a critique of commodity and commercialism. My paintings respond to cultural conditions of the digital age.

The Shadow Puppets Of Elsinore: Edward Gordon Craig And The Cranach Press Hamlet, James P. Taylor
The Shadow Puppets Of Elsinore: Edward Gordon Craig And The Cranach Press Hamlet, James P. Taylor
Mime Journal
Taylor considers the role that book arts may play in Craig’s theories of the new theatre, or the Art of the Future. He expands our understanding of Craig’s design work to include print culture, examining his engravings for the monumental editions of Hamlet published by Count Harry Kessler’s Cranach Press in 1929–30. Taylor explores the relationship of Craig’s designs for the 1912 Moscow Art Theatre production of Hamlet to his engravings for the German and English-language Cranach Press editions of the play. He suggests that it was only with this print publication that Craig finally achieved the absolute artistic control …

Merchandise, Promotion, And Accessibility: Keith Haring’S Pop Shop, Amy L. Raffel
Merchandise, Promotion, And Accessibility: Keith Haring’S Pop Shop, Amy L. Raffel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
During the peak of his career in New York, Keith Haring took his highly recognizable artistic style and distributed it in the form of merchandise in his Pop Shop, established in 1986. Stemming from his early work displayed on the New York streets, directly within public space, and his explorations into mass media strategies, he learned he could make his work accessible to new audiences outside contemporary art institutions and art circles. He translated his work across several surfaces: from subways or canvases, to everyday functional merchandise, such as buttons, t-shirts, and bags sold in his shop. Responding to a …
Complexity As A Narrative, Giacomo Pala
Complexity As A Narrative, Giacomo Pala
Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts
In this paper an attempt is made to discuss how the computer has imposed new conventions to architecture over the last thirty years. The paper’s aim is to discuss how the introduction of digital media has forced architecture to find ways to deal with new technologies and to develop new disciplinary meanings. First, the paper addresses the question of complexity and chaos in the postmodern discussion by the reading of Lyotard’s theories. Therefore, the essay pinpoints attempts of developing new conceptions of “complexity” in architecture derived from the post-modern sciences of indetermination. Interengsly enough, this was doable because both these …

Inspired by Kathe Kollwitz′s iconic etching from the Peasant War series, ″Outbreak from Bauernkrieg,″ this exhibition underscores the human condition. Taking queue from Kollwitz′s print, which depicts the effects of poverty, war and hunger on the working class, curators Emily Brostek and Claudia Preza bring together a group show of contemporary art works that dignify their subjects and depict triumph over oppressive socio-political conditions.

Ellis H. Minns And Nikodim Kondakov’S The Russian Icon (1927), Wendy Salmond
Ellis H. Minns And Nikodim Kondakov’S The Russian Icon (1927), Wendy Salmond
Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"Kondakov’s magnum opus [The Russian Icon] failed to win an audience. Though it appeared just in time for a surge of popular interest in Russian icons abroad, it never became the book of choice for the English-speaking public seeking a guide through the ‘dark forest’ of the icon’s history... My chapter offers some suggestions for why this crude caricature of Kondakov’s work took hold in the 1920s and became axiomatic throughout the Soviet period. In particular, it considers the role that Minns’s translation may have played, however inadvertently, in cementing this impression. Minns’s interventions in and framing of …

Sands Of Desire:The Creative Restlessness Of Lee Miller's Egyptian Period, Peter Schulman

"As a spectator, I wanted to explore photography not as a question (a theme) but as a wound,"Roland Barthes writes in Camera Lucida. Similarly, in the famous first lines of his surrealist book Nadja, Andre Breton concluded that the question he should ask himself should be "not who I am, but whom I haunt." Could either of these quotes apply to Lee Miller's aesthetic as well ? While her photographs during her period of "apprenticeship" with Man Ray focused on the female body, and the ones in her studio in New York on elegant portraiture, it is during her period …
