Art Investment Funds And Nfts, Francesca Osborne
Art Investment Funds And Nfts, Francesca Osborne
MA Theses
Art price inflation, rising levels of wealth, and the artworld’s financialization have
/="/">changed the way investors view the art market. In an attempt to capture the
/="/">momentous returns realized by successful collectors, art investment funds have
/="/">emerged with the conviction art can be used as a speculative or strategic alternative asset. However, the majority of art funds have been dissolved or put on hold. This paper examines the investment characteristics of fine art to uncover the rationale for art investment fund failures, finding the art market’s inefficiency as the foremost explanation. Subsequently, non-fungible token (NFT) art and …
Irene Cox, Lindsey Arturo
Irene Cox, Lindsey Arturo
Theses and Dissertations
This document explores the question of “Who is Irene Cox?” as a jumping off point for creating an artwork which navigates online information landscapes and their logics circa 2023. By using thirteen unique but similar found paintings of the same floral still life by an artist named “Irene Cox” I create a visually meandering, absurd, haunting, and comical pathway for thinking through who exactly is Irene Cox via the internet. How such a question is even asked becomes the art in which a myriad of visual techniques are used to explore the nature of the question. Included in this paper …
A Tenth Of A Second, Natalia Andrea Mejía Murillo
A Tenth Of A Second, Natalia Andrea Mejía Murillo
Theses and Dissertations
A Tenth of a Second is an installation that explores modes of cartographic representation of the universe, specifically the moon, in dialogue with poetic language. The work is based on research and reflection on disciplines such as astronomy and archaeology and addresses issues such as the fragility of the reference and categorization systems we use to approach reality, tactility and the body as a standard of measurement.
The Game Of Absolute, Rupeng Zhao
The Game Of Absolute, Rupeng Zhao
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis paper writing is a collection of short stories. Or it could be thought of as a small magazine or even an instruction manual for my work. There is a loose correspondence between its content and the symbols used in my installations. It is also realistically and physically presented in my exhibition as part of a "game box". The chaotic and contradictory narrative of this collection of short stories stems from my exhaustive pursuit of the elements that I try to approach in each story. This insatiable pattern of compulsive organization is also evident in the content of my …
Rooted In Between, Manavi Singh
Rooted In Between, Manavi Singh
Theses and Dissertations
Rooted in Between is a personal project that explores the complexities of belonging and the emotions that come with navigating between spaces that we call home. This written thesis is in support of the carefully curated video based and photographic work presented at an exhibition of the same title. The project's primary objective is to delve into the physical and emotional baggage that we carry with us as we move from one place to another. The project highlights the coping mechanisms adopted by the different generations in my family while struggling to find a place where we truly belong.

To, From: Of Time, Of Distance, Of Body And Mind, Fanxi Sun
Theses and Dissertations
This paper introduces the concepts, theories, and techniques associated with my thesis project “To, From.” The paper consists of three parts: Time as Structure, Distance as Premise, and Body and Mind. Each chapter is written in a mixture of personal narration and a general introduction to materials that are directly or implicatively relevant and important to the creation of my project. In this experimental narrative comprises film screening and live performance with multi-channel sound, I tell a story of non-story. Words and the exchange of words, movements and non- movements, objects that are being handled and subjects that are handling... …
An Arbitrary Aesthetic: Cultural Reproduction And Hegemonic Canonical Formations In The Western Theatrical Academy, Sim C. Rivers
An Arbitrary Aesthetic: Cultural Reproduction And Hegemonic Canonical Formations In The Western Theatrical Academy, Sim C. Rivers
Theses and Dissertations
Theatre as an artistic practice has often been celebrated as an art of and for the people, being a modality that in theory the common person has access to learn, explore and experience. In recent years I have become preoccupied with the growing rarification and privileging of this art form, particularly in how it is cognized and taught in the academic world. As such, I set out to investigate the mechanisms at work at levels structural, artistic, and personal that determine how theatre is taught and understood within the western academy.
This thesis seeks to examine and unpack the perceived …

“WONDERLAND” is a series of large-scale print and installation work created from 2021 to 2023. This body of work showcases dream-like landscapes, Vietnamese legends and customs blended with American culture to create unique visual narratives. Elements such as mythical animals, the Ly dynasty dragon and ceramics, and the Vietnamese Nom script speak to an almost forgotten culture. In contrast, the carno-lotus (cheeseburger) plant, Walleye, Bobcat, and winter scenery reference life in the Midwest. By combining elements from the two cultures, the artist builds parallel worlds where all living things can sustain and value each other’s differences — a place without …
Utility Lines, Carolyn Hartwell
Utility Lines, Carolyn Hartwell
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The paintings included in this Thesis Exhibition explore the theme of fragility that retains quiet strength. Combining delicacy with tenacity is how I arrived at the name of the exhibition, Utility Lines. A utility line transfers energy and is vulnerable to both weather and accident; the fragile materiality is the weakness inherent to functionality. In my work, I am deciding how much responsibility for the stability of a composition can be carried by the most tenuous elements. I test how much of the emotional and compositional load of a painting can be born by muted colors, awkward shapes and unsteady …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
My work is about the interest of communication and visual story telling through the mediums of drawing and painting. This comes from my earliest artistic education through comics. My exposure to comics has informed my decisions on composition and visual language. The reason why I chose to work with this in mind is because I see a general lack of this sort of visual storytelling in contemporary art. The process of telling stories through visual media is something that had been done for millennia. Through my work I wish to take this issue and utilize it to a contemporary viewer. …
Above And Below, Kristen Brown
Above And Below, Kristen Brown
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
My recent graduate artwork uses abstraction of form to describe the intersection between humans and the environment while relating the landscape of our skin to the ever-changing qualities of the natural landscape surrounding us. The photographic material is stressed into three dimensional shapes, producing creasing and tears as it is being contorted by human impact. At the same time that I am creating something new, I am manipulating artifactual evidence of something that already exists in everyday life. This is akin to how our bodies are distorted by outer influence, as well as our own autonomy. Above and below the …
Making Mochi!, Shannon 'Owo' Crystal Webb
Making Mochi!, Shannon 'Owo' Crystal Webb
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Making mochi (rice cakes) is a metaphor for making a way of life for myself through spiritual and cultural practice. I navigate the complexities of cultural mixing and identity as someone who is half Korean and half white. Rather than one or the other, I have always felt mixed, so my path to understanding my place in the world is also mixed. On one level, I am honoring my heritage by referencing Korean customs, folktales, and mythology. On another, I address how my needs are based on my current state, which includes my location, pop culture, and society at large. …

Constructing Jain Goddess Padmavātī In Gujarati Literature, Venu Mehta
Constructing Jain Goddess Padmavātī In Gujarati Literature, Venu Mehta
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
Worship of the goddess Padmāvatī emerged more than a thousand years ago. This article explores three songs about her in Gujarati by Paṇḍit Vīrvijayajī (1773-1852). By analyzing the style and form of his work, one learns a great deal about devotional liturgies that commemorate goddess Padmāvatī’s protection of the Jina Pārśvanātha and, in turn, his protection of her.

Women’S Voices From History: Gond Rani Durgawati And Rani Lakshmibhai, Nandini Sengupta, Moupia Basu
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
Two strong women are compared and contrasted in this article. Gond Rani Durgawati (1524-1564) led a resistance movement in Jabalpur against the Mughal rule of Akbar. Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858) organized the people of Jhansi against Sir Hugh Rose, an officer defending the interests of the British East India Company. Both women continue to be remembered for their bravery and their loyalty to the people they ruled.

Amrita Devi Bishnoi (d. 1730) is said to have sacrificed her life with 362 others to protect the Khejari trees in the Rajasthan desert. Both women continue to inspire social justice and ecological activism.
An Examination Of Gandhian Economic And Political Thought And Its Relevance To The Empowerment Of Women, Purnima Mehta Bhatt
An Examination Of Gandhian Economic And Political Thought And Its Relevance To The Empowerment Of Women, Purnima Mehta Bhatt
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Indigenous Stitch-Arts Of India: Tradition And Revival In A Global Age, Punam Madhok
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
Stitch art allows for the creative expression and economic support of countless women throughout India. This article examines four notable styles: chikankari, flora and fauna stitched in white thread on fine white cotton, rabari, the stitching of mirrors into colorful cloth, phulkari, resplendent flowery motifs sewn into shawls in Punjab, and kantha, Bengali patch work yielding quilts and seating mats. In addition to describing each technique, this article discusses how women have been economically empowered through this art by such organizations as Self-Help Enterprise (SHE) in Kolkata and Adithi, a women’s cooperative, in Bihar.
Curatorial Project For Community Gathering Art Exhibitions: “Boundaries, Binds And Beyond”, Jasmeetkaur Thakral
Curatorial Project For Community Gathering Art Exhibitions: “Boundaries, Binds And Beyond”, Jasmeetkaur Thakral
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This independent study aims to explore and examine how community arts and cultural events are shaped by boundaries and binds. Boundaries, drawn by partition and geopolitics, and binds set by religion, economic, elitist (traditionalist/conservative), or social hierarchy, create new subcultures (minorities) in their areas of settlement. Centuries of colonialism and turmoil at borderlines have given birth to dispersed and displaced communities. Diasporic communities, such as the Thai-Indian community, echo the sounds of their past but also constantly strive for inclusivity to enable a sense of cultural belonging in their new home. After cocooning, learning language, food, customs, and traditions, what …

Curatorial Project For Art Exhibition: “Bootleg Show” By Mrkreme, Nattida Thaewpattha
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The "BOOTLEG SHOW" by MRKREME is a curatorial project for an art exhibition that delves into the interplay between mass production, aesthetic values, and originality within the realm of contemporary art toys. Curated with a focus on examining the impact of distortion in art, the exhibition explores the nuances of value formation and how societal influences shape our perception of worth. The first part of this study is an exploration into the concept of art toys through the meanings of the words "art" and "toys" to better understand their roots. It examines the differentiation between a toy and an art …
Curatorial Project For Art Exhibition: "Where Emotions Take Form, Outsider Art By Everyday Individuals", Yiwen Zhu
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Where Emotions Take Form: Outsider Art by Everyday Individuals, is an exhibition that celebrates the captivating world of outsider art created by individuals who are not traditionally trained artists but, rather, ordinary people from our everyday lives. This exhibition brings to light the raw, unfiltered expressions of ordinary people, transcending conventional artistic boundaries and offering a glimpse into the richness of human creativity. Outsider art is art made by self-taught or supposedly naïve artists with typically little or no contact with the conventions of the art world. Under this concept, in most cases, when people speak of outsider art, they …
