This study attempts to analyze the history of the nation and kingdom of Edom. The author relates Edomite history through the lens of biblical criticism and available historical, geographical, sociological, and archaeological analyses. The Edomite relationship to ancient Israel is examined in an attempt to bring into focus much of the long forgotten and ignored history of Edom.

In coming to grips with what are essentially logical and conceptual problems Plato doubtless had in mind and followed the example set by the natural philosophers. It seems very likely, therefore, that he thought of his Forms as causes of certain puzzling facts in a manner initially not wholly unlike that in which others had believed air or fire to be causes of various physical phenomena. Plato's language suggests that his own explanatory formula, though strikingly different in function from any other, was fashioned after those of his precursors.

From CLASSICAL TIMES to the present, scholars have been rejecting Lysias' speeches. Their efforts are now complete. In the time of Dionysius of Halicarnassus the Lysian corpus included 425 speeches. Of these, Dionysius averred that "no fewer than 200" juridical orations were the work of Lysias. Including some nonjuridical speeches, he settled upon a total of 230 as genuine works. The scholarship factor and the usual accidents of transmission have left us but thirty-five. This includes two epitomes (orations 11 and 15), three extensive quotations in Dionysius' De Lysia ludicium (orations 32, 33, and 34) and the Eroticus from Plato's …

“The obscenity of Catullus has long been a stumbling block,” writes C. H. Sisson. Carmen 16 probably offers more of an impediment to the translator than any other poem in the corpus. It seems also to have suffered more: coyly rendered, opaquely rendered, bowdlerized, and finally truncated through being misunderstood, this poem may show how some losses have occurred in the transmission of classical texts. An obvious difficulty is in the repeated first and final line. What can a translator do with it? Until recently, English as forthright as the Latin could never be printed. This is more bibliothèque than book. A labyrinthine gold mine, but mapped. It presents theories and ideals of style and composition from Aristotle and Dionysius to Weil and Jespersen. Also Chomsky. The historic sweep stuffs them somehow between two covers, finding and interweaving illustrations for everything, while showing developmental lines. One can read this volume and then see one’s Vergil or Montaigne with new eyes and new appreciation.

This work examines the demonology of the Apology, De Mundo, De Deo Socratis, Florida, and De Dogmate Platonis in various aspects, noting places where De Mundo transmutes the meaning of its Greek model, the Peri Kosmou. These changes in meaning Dr. Regen shows to be systematic; they align the Latin version with Plato’s Symposium in places, and with Apuleius’ principles generally. Some changes may be illusory: does “rex omnium et pater” differ enough from ho panton hegemon kai genetor that conclusions can be drawn from the difference? Most changes, though, are more substantive. The sum is a useful …

For the topics covered, the book is a useful and thorough reference. The evidence is presented, and where Harrison goes beyond it, there is always fair warning (e.g., “on a priori grounds, one would have expected that,” or “we may suppose ...”). The book is full of discussion of the finer points, and the discussion is honest and undogmatic. Harrison would clearly have been a fine fellow to discuss the Attic orators with: I am sorry I shall not have the chance; I am glad that his colleague preserved this book for all of us.
