In November 1975, a salvage excavation was conducted in Nazerat ‘Illit (map ref. 23175/73415), following the discovery of a burial cave that was reported by the regional inspector Z. Berkowitz. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by D. Davis.

Because of the mainly scholarly studies of Milton’s works, and the many questions that have yet to be resolved, an annotated bibliography of Milton’s classicism is indispensable in enabling one to survey the ground that has been covered and to clarify the issues further. The observation that John M. Steadman makes about Paradise Lost also applies to Milton’s entire canon.

The items in this bibliography are organized in five categories: (1) epic, (2) tragedy, (3) prose, (4) minor poetry, and (5) general criticism. Listings within these categories are alphabetical.

The papyrus now accessible as P. Merton II 100 was first edited by H.I. Bell as "A Requisitioning Order for Taxes in Kind," in Aegyptus, fasc.2 (1951) (Raccolta Vitelli), pp. 307-12, and subsequently reprinted as SB VI 9232. The document, written during the emirate of Jordanes (ca. A.D. 699-704), is dated 23 Phaophi of the thirteen indiction (21 October 699). Difficulties of decipherment are owed to the colors of the inks that were used (they fade into the color of papyrus itself), the frequent use of abbreviation, and the extreme cursiveness of the second hand (lines 5-8). Until recently, the Later Roman Empire was commonly judged to have been an age of severely restricted social mobility. Many individuals were bound to remain for life in their places of origin; others were compelled to take up their fathers' occupations or to perform services incumbent upon them by heredity. The traditional view, drawn largely from the evidence of the great imperial law codes, received its first broad challenge from Professor A. As it now stands in current editions of Lucan, the sentence contained in 8. 860-61 makes little or no sense. In dealing with it editors have resorted to emendation and various manipulations of punctuation, while commentators and translators have unsuccessfully attempted to wrench some meaning out of it.' Two versions of these lines have gained overwhelming acceptance by editors of Lucan. The first reads es of manuscript U and takes Fortuna as vocative. Several factors have influenced research on the topic of ancient suicide. In the last ten years suicide has reached almost epidemic proportions in the U.S.A. In 1967 there were 21,325 reported suicides, or almost eleven suicides for every 100,000 people in the United States. In 1974 there will be over 25,000 people who take their lives; the actual total probably is at least twice or maybe triple this number, since many suicides are labeled accidental. For every recorded suicide there are at least eight attempts. The problem of suicide is fast becoming a symptom of modern living, especially in the …
