This paper attempts to provide an insight of asceticism and its development in Egypt through the literal work Athanasius's Life of Antony. It sets out to explain how the peculiar geography and environment in Egypt contributed to the development of asceticism and how the practices of St. Antony reflected the contemporary ideas on soul and body.

Sacrificial Ritual And The Palace Of Nestor: A Reanalysis Of The Ta Tablets, J. Morton, N. G. Blackwell, Kyle W. Mahoney

The Ta tablets are a series of Linear B documents from the Palace of Nestor at Pylos that inventory vessels, fire implements, slaughtering paraphernalia, and furniture. This article argues that all the equipment documented on the Ta tablets pertains to a single large-scale ritual cattle sacrifice and was not equipment for the banquet that would have followed the sacrifice. The argument is rooted in a reanalysis of the tables listed on the Ta tablets that concludes that they were used for the slaughter and butchery of sacrificial cattle. This assignment is to navigate through a webapp designed to teach students of Sanskrit everything they need to know about the Sanskrit alphabet. It is structured in such a way such that students will encounter each letter, its pronunciation, script, and special properties in turn. Students will also learn how to write the Devanāgarī script through a writing practice platform integrated into the webapp.

Introduction to Sanskrit (CLST 023) is designed to give students novice-mid to novice-high proficiency in Sanskrit according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL foreign language proficiency standards. It introduces students to the language of Sanskrit, approaching it as a spoken as well as a written language. The course will include a weekly spoken Sanskrit session followed by reading and writing. Throughout this course, students will be covering fundamental grammatical concepts in order to develop a working knowledge of the most common forms and constructions one is likely to encounter in readings of the language. Grand Allusions: Vergil In Phaedrus, Jeremy B. Lefkowitz

This article focuses on two allusions to Vergil in the opening of the third book of Phaedrus’ Aesopic fables (3.Prol.) and suggests that Vergilian poetry plays a surprisingly central role in Phaedrus’ reflections on the nature and purpose of his poetic project. By linking his own avowedly humble poetry to the Aeneid and Eclogues, Phaedrus draws attention to some unexpected points of contact with Vergil; but he also quite clearly presents himself as a relatively unimportant poet who has had a particularly difficult time finding acceptance in Rome. The engagements with Vergil thus provide contexts for Phaedrus to highlight a …

From Catullus to Horace, the tradition of Latin erotic poetry produced works of literature which are still read throughout the world. Ovid’s Amores, written in the first century BC, is arguably the best-known and most popular collection in this tradition. Born in 43 BC, Ovid was educated in Rome in preparation for a career in public services before finding his calling as a poet. He may have begun writing his Amores as early as 25 BC. Although influenced by poets such as Catullus, Ovid demonstrates a much greater awareness of the funny side of love than any of his predecessors. …

Herodotus portrays both Croesus and Xerxes as resolutely unaware of their own mortality, despite conversations about the life span of an ordinary human (Croesus), and the mortality of his massive army (Xerxes). Part of what makes Croesus and Xerxes hubristic, for Herodotus, is their obliviousness to this salient aspect of their humanity.

Aesop And Animal Fable, Jeremy B. Lefkowitz

This chapter examines the tensions between the symbolic valence of anthropomorphic animals and authentic concerns about real animals in fables of ancient times. It provides an overview of sources and scholarly approach in this study of the Graeco-Latin fable and explores the boundaries between human and animal in early Greek fable-telling. This chapter suggests that the fable tradition occasionally eschews symbolism and anthropomorphism entirely, which reveals a deep and abiding interest in animal behaviour and in material that could be considered as natural history. This talk addresses how the concept of 'relevance' has tended to be used and abused in our time, and how it has affected public attitudes towards the place of Classics in the academy. As the modern world has become increasingly pluralistic and internationalised, Classics has lost not so much its ability to appear an, indeed, be, relevant to our times, but rather its status as a cultural marker of class, sophistication, or even virtue. In the fifth century, traditional myths about gods and heroes of a remote age still constituted a shared cultural language for speaking about a variety of more or less specific current issues of a philosophical, ethical, social, and political nature. Other than tragedy and epinician poetry, we should especially remember the role of myth in Thucydides, whose ‘Archaeology’ sets down his fundamental, and ideologically charged, view of history. Who Are Herodotus' Persians?, Rosaria Vignolo Munson

In analyzing how Herodotus' descriptions of foreign societies reflect Greek assumptions and prejudices, we have sometimes failed to recognize the extent to which he reports persuasive and historically valid information. This is particularly true of the Persians for whom Herodotus appears to have had access to very good sources, especially perhaps among Medes and Persians living in Asia Minor. This paper argues that Herodotus' representation of Persian character and customs and his understanding of the relationship between the king and his subjects is based on genuine native traditions that reflect an internal debate within Persian elites in the aftermath of …
