Soon after, Mauretania as:well would become a province, thus creating a sphere of direct Roman control stretching across the top of the African continent. These territories would become Rome's most valuable possessions, economically and culturally; their influence on Roman history, an influence not to be overlooked by historians., would be profound. A study of Hawthorne's poetry and poetic attitudes encompasses three separate but integrally related areas. First, few people realize that Hawthorne wrote verse, and no other investigation of the nature and significance of the meager surviving body of this poetry has yet been undertaken. But Hawthorne's failure to create verse of enduring quality is intimately connected with the second part of the study, Hawthorne's own views of 19th century poetry and the motives surrounding his deliberate rejection of poetry as his dominant creative mode. The novel is a recasting of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. Burgess’s love of language is becoming proverbial, and this novel is a philologist’s delight. Many of the words he uses as English are to be found in neither first, second, nor third edition of the unabridged. Browsing through dictionaries, including Classical Greek dictionaries, is part of the fun of reading this book, and was presumably part of the fun of writing it. It is crammed with significant names and with riddles, the first of which would have pleased the Sphinx, the answer to which is ingenious enough to be Oedipal. …

The papyrus is owned by the University of California at Berkeley and housed in the Rare Books Department of the Bancroft Library. It was summarily described on page 332 of The Tebtunis Papyri, Vol. II, and mentioned in the introduction toP. Teb. 397 on page 258 of the same volume. Interest in the document and an approximate date are provided by its association with P. Teb. 397 (= MChr. 321) of 198 A.D., a settlement of a long outstanding debt. In 1972, an excavation was conducted in the ancient cemetery of Qanat al-Ja'ar (north of Ein Hanatziv; map ref. 247/709), under the direction of D. Bahat. In the excavation, and in those that preceded it, three types of tombs were exposed. The finds in the tombs included many pottery vessels, bronze vessels, glass vessels, weapons including a spear and a knife, cosmetics vessels, a mirror, a fibula pin, and jewellery.

The Promethean characteristics of contemporary young iconoclasts as they have expressed disapproval of the society which they have inherited and in which they feel entrapped prompted this study. Our interest here lies with the nature of the dissatisfaction rather than with ways of expressing it. If follows that out concern is primarily with the gift of Prometheus - the fire rather than with the rebellion and defiance associated with the demigod who took action against the tyranny of Zeus.

The type of document commonly referred to as the repayment, or return of a loan has been recently discussed in the introduction to P. Yale 63. The editors there conclude (p. 198) that "written repayments of loans were not given for repayment itself, but to cover peculiar circumstances" (spaced by me), such as the decease of the original creditor or debtor, or occasions when repayment was made in a place different from that in which the loan was taken out. The two papyri presented below lend confirmation to this conclusion: No. 1 is the repayment in Tebtunis of a loan …

One of the most influential of Aristotle's ideas, the idea that the heavenly bodies consist of a fifth element distinct from the four earthly elements (earth, water, air, and fire) is widely believed to have been introduced to the world for the first time in Aristotle's lost dialogue De Philosophia. Several problems (aporias) are discussed: a) the meaning of the phrase "complete virtue" in the Eudemian Ethics; b) does the last chapter of EE explain this phrase? c) How do the "Common Books" (EN V, VI, and VII = EE IV, V, VI) apply to the problem of "complete virtue". Decarie approaches this problems from the direction of Plato's Laws 12. He describes the structure of "complete virtue" in EE and argues that the final chapter of EE is a reasonable conclusion to the book, and that the Common Books fit well with the rest of EE.

The two papyri edited below are housed in the Rare Books Department of the Bancroft Library on the University of California's Berkeley campus. Of Roman date, they were summarily described on page 303 of The Tebtunis Papyri Vol. II and have listings in Roger A. Pack's Greek and Latin Literary Texts from Greco-Roman Egypt. The collations which follow are based upon P. von der Muihll's edition (Basel 1946). For fragment no. 1, pertinent excerpts from the apparatus criticus of that edition are reproduced.
