Remembering Arkansas Debate: The Use Of Collective Memory In Analyzing The Role Of Intercollegiate Debate At The University Of Arkansas, Barry John Regan
Remembering Arkansas Debate: The Use Of Collective Memory In Analyzing The Role Of Intercollegiate Debate At The University Of Arkansas, Barry John Regan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As one of the most successful organizations on campus for nearly a century, the University of Arkansas debate team created many memories and stories from their time in competition. According to the framework of collective memory, the production and dissemination of these stories is what connects the past, present, and future of a debate team together.
I first reconstruct the history of debate at universities, beginning with development of debate at the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford. I then detail the history of debate and argumentation at American universities, including the first intercollegiate debate in 1881. I then …
A Way Out: The History Of The Outing Program From The Haskell Institute To The Phoenix Indian School, Alexandria L. Gough
A Way Out: The History Of The Outing Program From The Haskell Institute To The Phoenix Indian School, Alexandria L. Gough
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
From the earliest years of the United States, its leaders wrestled with the perceived need to assimilate Indian peoples into American society. Many believed that Indians in their "natural" condition were cultural primitives incapable of taking part in national life. However, with proper guidance they could be elevated to a level of civilization that would allow them to join the national family. After the conclusion of the Indian Wars in the 1880's, the United States government began to address the continued "Indian" problem by establishing Indian boarding schools. Indian children attended school to learn to behave as white, Christian and …
Performing Literacy: How Women Read The World In The Late Eighteenth-Century British Novel, Amy Hodges
Performing Literacy: How Women Read The World In The Late Eighteenth-Century British Novel, Amy Hodges
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the intersection of sensibility, Social identity, and literacy practices among representations of women readers in four late eighteenth-century British novels. Through an analysis of the authors' use of identity constructs which shaped and were shaped by reading practices, this study documents the rise of Social identity formation as mutually constitutive with the history of reading. The first chapter reveals how Charlotte Lennox's The Female Quixote uses Arabella's follies as education for readers about the corresponding processes of reading their society and reading novels. The second chapter argues that Frances Burney's Evelina considers women's ability to read others …

By using the curriculum vitae and a survey, this research found that the career profile of African American SSAOs at PWI's were African Americans who had earned a terminal degree, averaged eight career moves over 18 years and were involved in national associations where they published and presented. These SSAOs were active in their communities and willing …
An Analysis Of Narrative Types And An Investigation Into The Privileging Of Narrative Types On Standardized Testing, Rachel Villarreal Garza
An Analysis Of Narrative Types And An Investigation Into The Privileging Of Narrative Types On Standardized Testing, Rachel Villarreal Garza
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Research on the narrative writing of males and females shows significant differences between the two, and scores for standardized writing tests consistently demonstrate females outperforming males. Based on this information, it is important to investigate whether there are links between narrative content and this gender gap. In this study, I selected fifty officially scored essays written in response to an eleventh grade English Language Arts Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam. Essays were coded for broad and specific narrative types according to categories adapted from research on the writing of males and females. I then determined whether certain narrative …

The Forgotten Children: The Educational Demographics Of An Austrian Diocese 1848-1852, Mathew Richard Boyeson
The Forgotten Children: The Educational Demographics Of An Austrian Diocese 1848-1852, Mathew Richard Boyeson
Graduate Masters Theses
Educational demographics of an Austrian diocese in Styria were examined between the years of 1848 and 1852, to show both the importance of the data and the possibility for further research. The data was examined in conjunction with the imperial education law that directed the Austrian educational system in the nineteenth century. Both the micro and macro elements of the paper were influenced by the strong Austrian Catholic tradition and were integrated heavily into the paper to help put the data in perspective. The limited amount of research on the topic restricted specific conclusions for the research, however there are …
Moving Beyond The “Mosqueteria:” A Critical Analysis Of The Media’S Coverage Of Religious Accommodation At An Ontario Public School, Aruba Mahmud
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This qualitative case study considers the weekly congregational Muslim prayers held at an Ontario public middle school and the widespread media and public reaction to them. Drawing primarily from the work of Said (1997, 2003), this research questions how and why the prayers became the source of controversy nearly four years after they commenced, and what, if any, impact this media and public reaction has had on the school community. Eight interviews were conducted, along with a critical analysis of the news coverage of the prayers. The results reveal the persistence of post-colonial discourse and prejudice towards Muslims and Islam …

Weaving The Academic And Social: Working In Higher Education On Rural And Remote Australian Campuses, Jeannette Stirling, Celeste Rossetto
Weaving The Academic And Social: Working In Higher Education On Rural And Remote Australian Campuses, Jeannette Stirling, Celeste Rossetto
Jeannette Stirling
Our paper examines the complexities of providing academic learning support for students studying at small rural and regional Australian university campuses. As educators who live and work in regional campus communities, we have come to understand that the academic advice provided on campus has the potential to resonate through the social, and vice versa. We argue that, despite these complexities, this weaving of the social and academic can result in a teaching process more akin to a co-production of knowledge rather than the traditional didactic models of teaching employed at larger campuses where, in this type of populous environment, the …

The Workgroup on public education was brought together to formulate an international perspective on public education for the important public health challenge of increasing colorectal cancer screening. The focus of the group did not include professional education, which is an important channel for public education, since another Workgroup covered that topic. The results of the Workgroup represent an expression of expert opinion and did not include a comprehensive review of the literature. However, the recommendations for further research may stimulate a more in-depth examination of the literature in some areas and generate ideas for investigation.

Implementing Comprehensive Health Education: Educational Innovations And Social Change, Lloyd Kolbe, Donald Iverson
Implementing Comprehensive Health Education: Educational Innovations And Social Change, Lloyd Kolbe, Donald Iverson
Don C. Iverson
The effectiveness of health education is ultimately determined by whether it is implemented, and how it is implemented. Although a given health education innovation may be designed and experimentally assessed to promote well-being with some measure of effectiveness and efficiency, the actual impact of the innovation will depend upon the manner in which it is disseminated, initiated, and maintained. The implementation of health education programs in schools or elsewhere is a function of the types of innovations available, certain characteristics of those innovations that influence their use, and the manner in which the innovations are brought into practice. This paper …

Don C. Iverson
In this review we assess the recent developments in research and practice pertaining to health education in schools. We begin by defining school health education within the broader framework of community health education and promotion. The shifting priorities, purposes, and assumptions of school health education are traced and attributed. They lead to a new generation of problems and methods that call for a concentration of research on ways to combine the classroom contributions of health education with the broader organizational, economic, and environmental supports that will predispose, enable, and reinforce behavior conducive to health.
