The number of students attending post-secondary institutions outside of their home countries has been increasing for the past forty years. Student mobility patterns have shifted over this period, as the result of many important political, economic, and cultural variables. One thing that has remained unchanged, however, is the ranking of the United States (US) as the number one destination country in the world. In response to the steady influx of non-native English-speaking students, many U.S. universities are now offering intensive English programs (IEP) that provide students an opportunity to improve their academic language skills in situ prior to matriculation.
