The Precepts Of Zion And Joseph Smith's City Of Zion Plan: Major Influences For The Planning Of Nauvoo, Marjorie E. Eddy

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the archaeological question of the relationship between city planning and belief systems. It examines the extent to which the city plan of Nauvoo, Illinois, was influenced by the four precepts of Zion as outlined by Joseph Smith, the first President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These precepts are considered as unity, order, economic equality, and leadership. The City of Zion plan as developed by Joseph Smith was the basis for many cities, including Nauvoo. The Zion plan is examined to determine the influences of the four precepts of Zion on city planning. Specifically, …

Housing Needs In New Suburbs Of Indian Metropolii: Case Study Of Kothrud, Pune, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sashikant B. Sawant

City and Regional Planning

This article, a survey of three localities in a rapidly expanding suburb of Pune, differentiated classwise, illustrates the segmented utilisation of livelihood opportunities, services and facilities by the residents of the region. More importantly, the article attributes the suburb's robust growth to its timeliness in meeting the emerging housing needs of the upwardly mobile middle class living in the heart of the Pune city and also suggests, that its relatively low infrastructural cost may be an incentive attracting the retired members of middle class households of Mumbai.

Fisheries Management Report No. 4 - Planning For The Further Development Of The Aquaculture And Marine Farming Industry At Jurien Bay, Dave Everall

Fisheries Published Reports

There is a well documented global requirement for some twenty million tonnes of edible sea foods from aquaculture in the next fifteen years. Most of the projected increase in production will need to be from mariculture because of limiting factors on land based aquaculture. At present, approximately 85%of all aquaculture occurs in the Asian region.

Globally, temperate water species have market advantages because of their ability to supply a growing market preference for a firm white fleshed fin fish. Although significant temperate water aquaculture occurs in various countries north of the equator, there are growing environmental concerns surrounding production of …

The Impact Of The Physical And Cultural Geography Of Southeastern Utah On Latter-Day Settlement, Sally Timmins Mandurino Jan 1998

The Impact Of The Physical And Cultural Geography Of Southeastern Utah On Latter-Day Settlement, Sally Timmins Mandurino

Theses and Dissertations

The Latter-day Saint settlements in southeastern Utah, namely Bluff, Monticello and Blanding, were impacted by the physical and cultural geography of the area. These geographic elements hindered, and in some cases prevented, the Latter-day Saint colonizers from fulfilling the seven basic principles of Latter-day Saint expansion and colonization in the Great Basin. The impacts of physical geography were the geology, the climate, the soil and the rivers and streams. The impacts of cultural geography were the Navajo Indian Tribe, the Paiute Indian Tribe, and the criminal element. This thesis discusses the geographic elements of the area, how they impacted the …

Sensitive Urban Mass, Thomas Zoli May 1997

Sensitive Urban Mass, Thomas Zoli

Architecture Senior Theses

Even with little remaining industrial presence in Amsterdam, NY the relics of industrial prosperity still hold an important urban identity. They represent the city as it was originally designed. I propose that by reprogramming a large section of integrated, industrial urban fabric, it is possible for the city to reclaim its identity and grow. Most early American industrial architecture is inherently urban. only later when planning boards purged industry from the city center because of the side effects if an industrial core, did the evolution on the industrial satellite city emerge. The mill (grist, textile, powder, etc.) was the urban …

Human Capital Investment As An Economic Development Strategy: A Detroit Analysis, Truman Hudson Jr. May 1997

Human Capital Investment As An Economic Development Strategy: A Detroit Analysis, Truman Hudson Jr.

Wayne State University Theses

Many urban developers have responded to the challenges of economic development1 by providing tax incentives to businesses for relocating to urban areas (Bartik, 1995). By not being able to provide the skilled labor force that businesses require, developing communities are not postured to fully take advantage of the newly created job opportunities. Thus, wage disparities between the classes increase, leaving many of the underclass citizens without adequate employment for sustaining modest living standards (Turner, 1991).

As part of various economic development strategies2, increased concerns have been given to human-capital based strategies (Psacharo-Poulos, 1985). This paper puts forth …

Real Estate 20:20, John Ratcliffe Jan 1997

Real Estate 20:20, John Ratcliffe

Articles

This paper seeks to establish a framework for studying real estate futures. In doing so, it explores the general climate of change within which property decisions will have to be made, and examines the specific real estate opportunities that might emerge as a result of that change. For the purpose of appraisal, the forces of change are grouped into six sectors - cultural, demographic, economic, environmental, governmental and technological. Property perspectives are then portrayed for each of these sectors, and some conclusions drawn regarding the likely directions of change in the fields of real estate investment, development and management. Above …

Urban Renewal: The Huntington Experience, Mark B. Bugher Jan 1997

Urban Renewal: The Huntington Experience, Mark B. Bugher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study is based on the premise that restrictive regulations of the Huntington, West Virginia Urban Renewal Authority had a detrimental effect on new development in the downtown area of that city during the period between 1958 to the present. Background research was conducted on the history of urban renewal at the federal, state, and local levels to better understand the setting for events that occurred during the stated time frame. Using mostly urban renewal documents and interviews with local community leaders, an analysis was made of each urban renewal project undertaken in Huntington. Individual requirements of the Urban Renewal …
