Lagging Behind: Fayetteville’S Historic Architecture, Jennifer Taylor, Jennifer Webb
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Architecture is a reflection of what is happening in the larger cultural, economic, and artistic scene. Therefore, understanding regional variations in trend adoption is significant to understanding the relationship of Fayetteville, Ark., to the larger national context. Local architecture is a reflection of the citizens of Fayetteville as consumers of popular culture. Simultaneous adoption theory was used as the framework of this study. The project objectives were to 1) document significant architectural styles within designated historical districts and nearby areas, and 2) compare local stylistic trends with national trends to determine fit. Findings indicate that Fayetteville lagged behind the national …
Housing Industry : Problems And Prospects, Hoong Jun Lim
Housing Industry : Problems And Prospects, Hoong Jun Lim
Student Works (2000-2009)
The economic downturn in the mid-1997 had definitely affected the housing industry. The oversupply especially in the commercial sector had affected many developers and financial institutions. Non-Performance-Loans had soared up. Housing projects delayed in completion, and worst, abandoned. Of course, oversupply is only one major problem facing the housing industry. On the other hand, the problem of low-cost housing for the poor, striving hard by both the private and the public sectors, only ended up never enough to meet the demands. Sometimes, there is no demand because of wrong locality (mismatch). During the 6th Malaysia Plan (1991-1995), only about 75 …

Student Works (2000-2009)
The Majlis Perbandaran Johor Bahru Structure Plan (1985) and the amended Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru Structure Plan ( 1997) had identified planning issues relating to primary schools in the city of Johor Bahru. Amongst the issues were the shortage of primary schools which has given rise to overcrowding in classrooms. Consequently. children were forced to enrol in schools which are located further away from their homes. The land-uses surrounding the schools were also found to be incompatible with thl! school environment. Hence, the dislocation of schools has affected the learning environment and the safety of school going children. The human …

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine
Planning
The New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) has been conceived as a knowledge-based clearinghouse, training, and change-agent program aimed at helping EPA's constituencies find financially successful approaches to environmental improvements. The NE/EFC will develop approaches to needs of particular priority in New England and potentially useful throughout the nation; share such approaches through the EFC national network; and help make tools from that network accessible throughout New England. In 1999 we began exploring with potential users how this ninth of the nation's EFCs might best address the region's needs. The assessment continued through the Muskie School's EFC proposal to EPA …

Water
The town of Yarmouth currently has a $30 million septic sludge treatment plant and transport lines in place. The vast majority of the dwellings and businesses in the Hyannis Park area are on septic systems that are viable and Title 5 compliant, regardless of age. Conventional, "non-failing" septic systems, however, were never intended to remove form their effluent nutrients such as nitrogen. These have become recognized as an environmental threat only as our understanding of the impacts of excess nutrients on ecosystems has increased in recent decades.
Managing Sprawl In The Land Of Unintended Consequences, Robert S. Bucci
Managing Sprawl In The Land Of Unintended Consequences, Robert S. Bucci
New England Journal of Public Policy
Americans witnessing the bulldozing of their country’s pastures, farmlands, and sensitive habitats to erect suburban housing tracts and commercial centers have come to realize that the remaining open land may be too precious to waste. Residential and commercial development is no longer quickly embraced to stimulate economic progress and prosperity. Municipalities are learning that development often extracts a price — sometimes the loss of community character and local charm, sometimes tax revenues that fall short of increased expenditures, and sometimes just plain ugliness. Responding to the new reality, many community officials have initiated unilateral ordinances regulating the development of open …
The Legacy Of Modern Urbanism In Brazil: Paradigm Turned Reality Or Unfinished Project?, Vicente Del Rio, Haroldo Gallo
The Legacy Of Modern Urbanism In Brazil: Paradigm Turned Reality Or Unfinished Project?, Vicente Del Rio, Haroldo Gallo
City and Regional Planning
The Modern Movement ideals of transformation and progress coincided with the national spirit and zeitgeist of the 1930s Estado Novo in Brazil. Despite a persistent conflict between distinct urbanist views a progressive approach of urbanism became eventually predominant. Its strong impact on urbanist manifestations reached its climax with the construction of Brasilia. This paper explores some negative aspects of the modern legacy in Brazilian urbanism, but by acknowledging that Modern Movement ideals helped to establish a great sense of social consciousness and promoted a common aim, also the creation of a particular identity is recognized. By strengthening local elements of …

"The intent of this thesis is to develop a new civic order for parking structures in the urban context. The thesis investigation will exist on two primary parts. The first area of investigation will deal with an urban design and analysis of parking as gateways of arrival to Manhattan. Tis will serve as entry nodes for all automobile passages into the city. The second half of the thesis is an investigation of the transformation of the parking garage, which has typically been seen as an eyesore, into an elegant structure."

Malay Reservation land (MRL) was introduced in t he Malaya during the British administration. The first Malay Reservation Land Enactment was enacted in 1913. The main objective of the reservation was to protect Malay lands from falling into the hands of non-Malay. However, because of the rapid development and urbanisation, the existence of MRL located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur was left backward from development. The main characteristic of these area was only a medium Malay housing area. Kampung Dato' Keramat strategically MRL area located after Kampung Baru facing the same fate. These MRL was identify by various housing …

Scenario Building: A Suitable Method For Strategic Property Planning?, John Ratcliffe
Articles
The scenario method has been widely used by decision-makers in business, industry and government for over thirty years as an unrivalled technique to learn about the future before it happens. This paper examines the principles, practice and pitfalls of scenario building with the prime aim of presenting the technique as one singularly relevant to the study of future property investment, development and management decisions and land use policy formulation. The origins of the approach from its military based beginnings, through the popularised global environmental applications to the current widescale use by industry and commerce are traced. Some definitions are advanced …

Architecture Senior Theses
The thesis became an architectural exploration of what makes neighborhood and community at two scales: at the scale of the city (macrocosm), represented by the urban plan; and at the scale of the individual (microcosm), represented by the concept of the house and housing. At these two contrasting scales, the main focus of the study was to explore how an urban design can shape community and to explore the role that housing plays in the making of urban fabric/neighborhood. These two main issues of urban planning and housing prototypes, and the set of questions they generated, became the framework for …

The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males, Joel Von Ornsteiner
The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males, Joel Von Ornsteiner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the validity of Machover's (1949) interpretation that attention to both the hips and buttocks drawn by male subjects in their first male Draw-A-Person Test (DAP) or the drawing of a female figure first are significant indicators of male homosexuality. The hypothesis was that the frequency of these homosexual indicators among non-instituted homosexuals would be significantly higher (P = < .05) than the male heterosexual group. One hundred homosexual and 100 heterosexual males were selected from groups of volunteers from two universities, one bookstore and a community center in the New York City area. The subjects were administered a DAP test in booklet format and a questionnaire. The drawings were classified for homosexual indicators blindly and independently by three judges who were trained in the use of the Machover interpretation of the DAP. Chi square analyses were calculated for the frequency of hips and buttocks and for the drawing of a female figure first and no significant differences between the self identified homosexual and heterosexual male groups in the expected direction were found. It was concluded that the lack of any significant difference between the scores of the homosexual and heterosexual males in this study casts considerable doubt on the validity of the male homosexual interpretations explored. Speculations were made concerning the widely discrepant results from past studies and this investigation. The majority of the past research had been conducted within institutional settings and there have been cultural changes over the last fifty years in both psychology and society's tolerance for the male homosexual. Unlike any previous DAP study, one-hundred urban homosexual and one-hundred heterosexual males were randomly selected. This researcher cautions that the DAP test should be interpreted with other available information, and results based on its independent use are viewed with much skepticism. Implications for future research were discussed.

A Quantitative Method For Estimating Probable Public Costs Of Hurricanes, Michael R. Boswell, Robert E. Deyle, Richard A. Smith, E. Jay Baker
City and Regional Planning
A method is presented for estimating probable public costs resulting from damage caused by hurricanes, measured as local government expenditures approved for reimbursement under the Stafford Act Section 406 Public Assistance Program. The method employs a multivariate model developed through multiple regression analysis of an array of independent variables that measure meteorological, socioeconomic, and physical conditions related to the landfall of hurricanes within a local government jurisdiction. From the regression analysis we chose a log–log (base 10) model that explains 74% of the variance in the expenditure data using population and wind speed as predictors. We illustrate application of the …

Founded on the Oxford model of a cluster of institutions, the Claremont Colleges has periodically established a new school. In the Spring of 1997, the Board of Fellows of the Claremont University Center charged with policy-making for the consortium-voted to establish a seventh college; the Keck Graduate Institute of applied life sciences. or bioengineering. Despite other landholdings, including a golf course and a non-operational gravel quarry, the Board of Fellows voted to site the New Venture on a portion-approximately eleven acres--of the Bernard Biological Field Station. (Pitzer's vote was cast against building on the Field Station.)

A Model To Minimize Non-Revenue Costs In Bus Transit Operations, Cornelius Nuworsoo
City and Regional Planning
This paper derives from feasibility studies for a proposed Bus Division of the Mass Transit Administration (MTA) to serve northeastern Baltimore. The study objective was to determine the comparative savings or additional costs between using existing versus new locations. The focus of the analysis was non-revenue operating costs which are affected by location because of vehicle deadhead travel, associated operator travel and other operator travel for relief purposes.
Based on the premise that “the optimal location of a storage facility is that which minimizes pullout and pull-in distances and times plus relief travel time between the facility and various …

The secondary retail market in Dublin has dramatically altered over the last four years. Indeed, the entire retail market in Dublin and countryside has witnessed a substantial upsurge in activity over the last four years. On Grafton Street retail Zone A rents are breaking £2,153 per square metre (£200 per square foot) barrier and premiums are in the region of £300,000 -£400,000. There is currently a shortage of good retail investment opportunities on Grafton Street, which is leading investors to turn to Dublin’s other prime street, Henry Street. Over the last year Zone A rents on Henry Street have increased …
