This article describes an art installation in Athy, Co. Kildare created by transition year students of Athy College to commemorate their school’s connection with the centenary of the casting of the first Garda station plaques in 1922 in the Duthie. Large Foundry, Chapel Street Athy. The installation was unveiled on 14 May 2022 on the original foundry site supported by a grant from Kildare County Council’s Decade of Commemorations and mentored by staff of Technological University Dublin. John Ruskin Howe Scrapbook, John Ruskin Howe
John Ruskin Howe
John Ruskin Howe (1895-1980) was born to David and Laura Howe in North Manchester, Indiana. In the 1910s, he enlisted for World War I in Nov 1918 and was honorably discharged in July 1919 at the rank of Sergeant. He was a graduate of Otterbein University in 1925, and then from Yale in both 1924 and 1927. He married Mary Elizabeth Brewbaker, and in 1939 became the fourteenth President of Otterbein University until 1945. After Otterbein, he spent several years travelling and ministering in various locations. He had two sons, Charles and John.

From an economic point of view, as well as from the standpoint of animal comfort, it is highly desirable that adequate barn or shed facilities be provided for the dairy herd. Some farmers have developed the idea that to keep cows healthy and comfortable and to produce sanitary milk it is absolutely necessary to have expensive barns. As a matter of fact, many of the dairy barns where sanitation is the primary object are quite inexpensive. A panoramic photograph, taken from the Cleveland Hotel, captures downtown Spartanburg, S.C. in 1918, and in particular, the 3rd Liberty Loan parade, with the 27th Division of the U.S Army marching down Main Street. Numerous downtown landmarks are visible, including the towers of Wofford College, the spire of Central Methodist Church, Cleveland Law Range, the court house of the period, Andrews Building, Belk Hudson Building, the Daniel Morgan Statue and Morgan Square, the intersection of Main and Church Streets, the original City Hall and the Spartanburg Herald Journal Building.

The first two chapters contain an exceedingly condensed statement of the limitations of mural painting and the history of its development in Europe, - a background for the real theme, which commences in the fairs chapter with an outline of the beginnings of mural painting in America. Chapter IV treats the Chicago World's Fair as an epoch-making event in the art, and develops the history from that point to the present day.
