Design work from the 1980 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Dormitory. Robert Meckfessel. The aim of positioning the dorm at the periphery of the UTA commuter parking lot, is to attempt to socially intermix the student residents with students who commute to campus. The three dormitory pathways meander across a pond and form a connection to the University. These paths define the form of the linear buildings and arrive at a plaza that focuses on the main route through the campus. Roof profiles also meander and join an earth berm, giving …

Earth sheltered housing has always been used by man throughout the ages. The need to conserve energy has forced man to seek alternative methods of housing that will meet this need. Earth sheltered housing has been in the shadow of above ground structures for many years. Recently the value of earth sheltered housing has been reexamined and a great deal of work has taken place towards the refinement of this old housing concept.
