Towards A "Critical Regionalism" For Rapidly Developing Areas Of Texas., David Dumez Hopman Dec 1998

Towards A "Critical Regionalism" For Rapidly Developing Areas Of Texas., David Dumez Hopman

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The published intellectual discourse on "Critical Regionalism" is more prolific in the literature of architecture and planning than that of landscape architecture. As a result, the existing parameters used to define regional elements are not always useful to landscape architects, particularly in rapidly developing areas in which there are few, easily recognizable, regional components to the landscape. This thesis uses the ideas embodied in Critical Regionalism as a means to reveal how selected landscape architects and landscape designers interpret the landscapes and architecture of Texas through their individual landscape design philosophies and methodologies. Specific methodologies for extracting regional elements from …

1998.2 - Aquarium Bilbao, Martin Price, Chy-Tseh Che, Dani Alsina-Tora

School of Architecture Student Projects - Archive

Design work from the 1998 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Aquarium. Chy-tseh Che, scheme one, and Dani Alsina-Tora, scheme two. An eddy or circular movement of water becomes the metaphor for an aquarium set in the river in Bilbao, Spain in scheme one. Spatial sequences flow from entry on land, through tunnels in the water, to ramps inside the aquarium. Scheme two is a landshape form in order not to be dwarfed by the adjacent Guggenheim. The ground is lifted up into the sky and the sky is brought down into …

5 | The Cave Of The Warrior: A Fourth Millenium Burial In The Judean Desert, Tamar Schick Dec 1998

5 | The Cave Of The Warrior: A Fourth Millenium Burial In The Judean Desert, Tamar Schick

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

During the survey of the caves in the Jericho area, Cave No. 13 revealed a uniquely well-preserved burial dating to the early 4th millennium BCE, accompanied by burial goods that have rarely been preserved elsewhere, due to the conditions of the cave. The middle-aged male buried together with a unique flint knife anda wooden bow and arrows, among other gifts, was termed the “Warrior”, although he may have been a hunter rather than warrior. Other perishable objects that so rarely survive the millennia include textiles, mats, a basket and leather sandals. A wide range of research topics, analyses and conservation …

Housing Needs In New Suburbs Of Indian Metropolii: Case Study Of Kothrud, Pune, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sashikant B. Sawant

City and Regional Planning

This article, a survey of three localities in a rapidly expanding suburb of Pune, differentiated classwise, illustrates the segmented utilisation of livelihood opportunities, services and facilities by the residents of the region. More importantly, the article attributes the suburb's robust growth to its timeliness in meeting the emerging housing needs of the upwardly mobile middle class living in the heart of the Pune city and also suggests, that its relatively low infrastructural cost may be an incentive attracting the retired members of middle class households of Mumbai.

Predictive Relationships For Uptake Of Organic Contaminants By Hybrid Poplar Trees, Joel Gerard Burken, Jerald L. Schnoor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Twelve Organic Compounds Commonly Found at Hazardous Waste Sites Were Studied for Uptake by Hybrid Poplar Trees. the Vegetative Uptake of Many of These Compounds Has Not Previously Been Demonstrated for Plant Species Being Utilized for Phytoremediation, Such as Hybrid Poplar Trees. Experiments Were Conducted Hydroponically Utilizing 14C-Labeled Compounds to Ascertain Translocation and Fate. Predictive Relationships for the Translocation and Partitioning to Plant Tissues Were Developed from the Experimental Data. Translocation and Partitioning Relationships based on Compounds' Octanol- Water Partitioning Coefficients (100 K(Ow)) Produced the Best Results, But the Relationships Did Not Allow for Fully Accurate Prediction of Each Contaminant's …
