Enhancing Access And Inclusion: The Retrofitting Of Olympic Facilities For The Paralympic Games, Lawrence W. Judge, Jeffrey Petersen, Adam Smith, Kyra Livergood

This critical review examines the strategies and challenges in adapting Olympic facilities for Paralympic use. A synthesis of recent literature evaluates successful retrofitting initiatives, elucidates ongoing challenges, and assesses the repercussions of global events on the dynamic process of facility conversion. The resulting analysis culminates in evidence-based recommendations for future investigations and the operational enhancement of Paralympic venues. These findings suggest that adopting a collaborative approach, anchored in universal design principles and preemptive planning, is imperative to developing accessible, efficient, and ecologically responsible Paralympic infrastructures.

For centuries, acequias and small grist mills in northern New Mexico villages played a major role in the agricultural economy of the region following the introduction of wheat from the Old World to the Americas. Wheat, in its ground form as flour, was a staple during the Spanish colonial period of the region. To process raw wheat, local mills (molinos) were essential infrastructure as were the acequias (ditches) that powered them. A fractal, a self-similar organic or geometric pattern that repeats at varying scales, is one of the most compelling characteristics found in nature. Previous studies on fractal patterns have demonstrated consistent trends in potential psychological benefits, such as stress reduction. However, we fall short of understanding one of the essential properties of fractals found in nature, i.e., the three-dimensionality of their appearance. This dissertation focuses on applying research to design in the setting of higher education. Specifically, it explores the informal spaces outside the classroom at a predominantly Black college in an urban setting. The existing structural challenges facing college students are many, including issues related to financial resources, mental health/wellness, family responsibilities, psychosocial identity formation, and structural racism. These challenges were compounded by the events of the spring of 2020, when a heightened awareness of anti-Black racism, combined with the hardships of COVID-19, brought college campuses to a close and masses of people to the streets to protest the unjust killings …

Understanding dust as a material system that blurs the line between ground and atmosphere, I developed a dust machine as a tool for making dust legible at the human scale. While the blurriness of ground is visualized at both particle and planetary scales, at the human scale, it becomes less evident. This study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to assess the rejuvenation of aged asphalt (AA) with waste soybean oil (WSO) and functionalized SBS polymers, focusing on: 1) constructing and validating models for virgin asphalt (VA), AA, and composite rejuvenated asphalt with WSO and polymers; 2) analyzing diffusion effects and binding abilities in these rejuvenated models; 3) evaluating interface binding and diffusion behaviors in composite rejuvenated models. The addition of functionalized SBS molecules and WSO improved the diffusion rates of various components within these models. When water interacts with bitumen, the diffusion and cohesion characteristics between the components of bitumen are negatively impacted. Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to construct various bitumen models, including bitumen–bitumen (without water), water-containing single bitumen, water-containing bitumen–bitumen, and bitumen–water–bitumen models. The primary research objectives were as follows: comparing the changes in the densities of bitumen models with and without water, analyzing the interlayer cohesive energies of bitumen models interacting with water, evaluating the hydrogen bonds in water-containing bitumen models, and characterizing the diffusion behaviors of bitumen components. The present study lays an emphasis on the microalgae-based for simultaneous wastewater bioremediation using Chlorella vulgaris and Micrococcus luteus mixed algal cultures to remove its constituent pollutants, amazing green technology guarantees benefits with the decrease in the formation of dangerous solid sludge. This study aims to investigate the effects of two superabsorbent polymer (SAP) types, S1 and S2 (with continual absorption and rapid desorption, respectively) as rheology-modified agent on 3D printing characteristics. Three base mixtures were selected with different thixotropic behaviors (i.e., mixtures with high re-flocculation (τfloc), high structuration rate (Athix), and both low τfloc and Athix, respectively). The initial mini-slump flow of 190±10 mm was secured by adjusting superplasticizer (SP) or water demand (increasing w/b by either 0.025 or 0.05). This study investigated the effect of 5-dimensional hooked-end fiber (5D) on the structural performance of beams and compared its efficiency with other fibers in strengthening structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with an increase in reinforcement ratio (ρ). The potential of using fibers to reduce the longitudinal rebar based on various design criteria was investigated. The fibers included 5D, a combination of 80 % 3-dimensional hooked-end and 20 % short steel fibers (STST), and two combinations of macro synthetic fibers A and B (MSF). Carbonation curing technology plays an important role in carbon cycling and improving the properties of cement-based materials, while the nucleation and growth mechanism of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is still unclear. Based on molecular dynamics simulation, the formation process and nucleation mechanism of CaCO3 in confined C-S-H nanopores with different calcium-silicon ratios were studied. The results show that the clustering behavior of CaCO3 in C-S-H nanopores filled with saturated CaCO3 solution can be divided into three phases, rapid agglomeration stage, slow cluster stage, and stable cluster stage. This study examines the effect of the material characteristics of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) on the printability and interlayer bond strength of 3D printing concrete. Three types of SAP, including two acrylamide-co-acrylic polymers with coarse and fine particle sizes (S1 and S2) and an acrylic copolymer (S3), were employed. The investigated mortar mixtures had a fixed initial mini-slump flow of 195 ± 10 mm and yield stress of 290 ± 25 Pa. The fluidity of SAP-incorporated mortars was maintained by either adjusting the superplasticizer dosage or increasing the water content. This Study Investigates the Effect of Thixotropy and Stiffness Evolution on the Extrudability and Buildability of 3D Printing Concrete. Different Types of Supplementary Cementitious Materials and Limestone Filler Were Used to Prepare Mortars with Varying Levels of Thixotropy and Early-Age Stiffness. Mixtures with Yield Stress and Flocculation (Τfloc) of 180–400 and 420–950 Pa, Respectively, Exhibited Adequate Extrudability Without Plastic Collapse. the Printing Was Completed 8–15 Min after Mixing at a Vertical Build-Up Rate of 138 Mm/min. Visual quality and impact assessments have historically relied on experts to formally evaluate the visual properties of a landscape. In contrast, environmental psychologists have studied subjective landscape preferences using ratings and surveys. These two approaches represent, respectively, the “objectivist” and “subjectivist” paradigms within visual landscape research. A gap, however, exists between these approaches: actual observation behaviors. In this paper, we argue for the inclusion of eye-tracking research in visual landscape assessments as a critical bridge between objective landscape qualities and subjective visual experiences. The Rheological Properties of Mortar Samples with Different Additions of CO2 during Mixing Were Determined. Flowable Cement-Based Mortars at Three Different W/c (0.55, 0.45 and 0.35) Were Produced and the Effects of CO2 Gas Were Examined on the Fresh Properties of Slump Flow, Yield Stress and Plastic Viscosity. For decades, researchers have searched for an unsaturated soil effective stress that performs analogously to effective stress for saturated soils and provides some simplifications over net stress and suction approaches. A recent debate is whether problems identified with unsaturated soil effective stress can be resolved via elastoplastic analyses. Effective stress equations are reviewed and categorized as being based on volume change, shear strength, yield, or degree of saturation. This dissertation explores the complex and context-dependent effects of the presence of other people on urban park experiences by drawing on diverse disciplinary perspectives and employing multiple methodological approaches, including theoretical synthesis, virtual reality, eye tracking, and qualitative methods.
