This study investigates the influence of concrete jacketing on the performance of steel columns subjected to blast loading, which can lead to progressive collapse. Using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations, the research evaluates concrete-encased steel columns with different concrete cover thicknesses to measure their resistance to lateral displacements induced by blasts. Findings reveal that increasing the thickness of the concrete cover markedly improves the column's ability to withstand such loads. The study also highlights that steel has better energy dissipation properties than concrete. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models depend on empirical constants to close the Reynolds stress terms. The empirical constants were obtained using experiments conducted at low Reynolds numbers several decades ago. In this paper, we revisit the turbulent viscosity parameter Cμ, based on the stress–intensity ratio c² = |uw|/k. Here, |uw| and k are the absolute values of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy, respectively. Through a priori comparisons, we find that the currently accepted value of Cμ = 0.09 does not agree with the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental datasets of wall-bounded turbulent planar flows. Global supply chains have vulnerabilities, and these escalate in crisis times like pandemics or wars. Digital twinning of supply chains can provide early alerts and timely interventions. We examined three companies in different industries using Digital Twin (DT) technology to improve their supply chain performance. We found that while DT successfully enhanced performance indicators, the dollar and time costs were significant, creating barriers to wider DT adoption. We conclude by outlining the positives and negatives of implementing Digital Twins in global supply chains.

This research investigates the impact of accelerated carbonation treatment on the pozzolanic reactivity of high-calcium fly ash (HFA) by monitoring the reaction heat of HFA/carbonated HFA (CFA)-calcium hydroxide (CH) blends and elucidates the underlying factors influencing the pozzolanic reactivity. The results indicate that in HFA/CFA-CH blends, CFA exhibits a comparable pozzolanic reactivity to that of HFA. This is attributed to the carbonation products accelerating the formation of MonoCarb aluminate (main) and C-S-H, compensating for the reduced heat resulting from the diminished highly reactive components after the carbonation treatment. The overall goal of this study was to assess 28 selected locations in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, score them for walkability and bikeability, and suggest changes to low-ranking locations to improve the infrastructure of the town. We selected these points by focusing on areas of target for residents (grocery shopping, routes to work, schools, etc.), and to ensure we covered a major portion of the town for proper representation. Upon close examination in this study, the feasibility of utilizing puffed rice as an insulation layer for construction is explored. Regions that are warm and receive direct sunlight experience heightened temperatures, which can lead to structures trapping excessive heat, resulting in increased cooling demands, energy consumption, and higher costs all around. As revealed via findings from research conducted over time, puffed rice showcases immense prospects when employed as insulation considering its high level of percolation coupled with low thermal conductivity rates. The study sought to determine the role of media and information education courses provided by the Jordan Media Institute in developing the skills of teachers of the Jordanian Ministry of Education in dealing with digital information and news verification in Jordan, by using the public survey approach using the questionnaire tool on a deliberate sample of (316) teachers who participated. This research examines urban best practices (BPs) across Latin America and the Caribbean to illuminate the prevalent issues and actions associated with these locally implemented initiatives. An analysis of 45 BPs from the UN-Habitat repository was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methods, organized into three phases. The first phase focused on collecting data such as BP sources, countries of origin, and years of implementation. The second phase identified common problems and actions within the BPs. Collaborating with the Hungarian Cultural Center at Mary of Victories Church, our class embarked on a multifaceted endeavor. Firstly, we recorded oral histories, transforming them into engaging videos for digital platforms. Secondly, we curated a Hungarian cookbook featuring authentic community recipes for fundraising purposes. Lastly, we crafted a comprehensive poster timeline highlighting significant milestones for the Center. Through these initiatives, we aim to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Hungarian community in St. Louis.

This collection explores the life of Gladys Mitchell and the home she shared with her family on Detroit's Eastside. Gladys and her husband, Ossian Sweet, lived with her parents Benjamin and Rosella in a residence on 9322-24 Cairney Street from 1922 to 1925 before moving to the now-historic bungalow at 2905 Garland Street, located about a mile southeast. In 1925, when the Sweets moved into an all-white neighborhood, their experience led to a landmark Supreme Court case that affirmed African Americans' rights to homeownership, including the right to defend their private property.

One challenge of using self-consolidating concrete (SCC) for cast-in-place structural applications is that the rheological properties of the concrete (low yield stress and low plastic viscosity) can lead to increased lateral pressure exerted on the formwork. High structural build up and thixotropy can reduce the lateral pressure, thereby allowing for simpler formwork and faster construction. The addition of CO₂ to SCC, in proportions from 0.063 % to 0.250 %, by weight of cement, was investigated as a rheology modifier.
