Architecture and Urban Design
A community space is a multigenerational gathering place in which a variety of activities, programs and services are offered for the benefit of the public. This space should be a pillar of the community. Just like in a family unit, a community that overcomes hard times, controversial issues and challenging obstacles together will grow closer.
In areas that are facing poor education, low income and a general decomposition of core values, a community center that encompasses resources for family, education, guidance, arts and entertainment, and technology can act as the catalyst for overall community improvement and a new cycle of …

Architecture and Urban Design
Collaboration with the Town of Bristol in the fall of 2013 when students in ARCH 415, Advanced Design Studio – Urban, under the guidance of Professor Ulker Copur, studied the waterfront area along the west side of Thames Street, from State Street south to the armory in Bristol, Rhode Island, including the continuation of a public boardwalk through the area linking up with the adjacent properties. The designs created by students would be used to guide the town in developing a master plan for the area and the new Bristol Maritime Welcome
Center.

The marketplace is going to be one of the highlights on Thames Street, serving as a destination for leisure, shopping and dining. The concept of the project is to have indoor space continue out to the water, providing an outdoor space for dining and leisure, but also giving the boardwalk a resting point. The building is planned as two floors, with the fish market and multipurpose area on the first and an eatery, sitting area, balcony and facilities on the second. The building will be made of a light metal frame with panels to enclose the space and is designed …

A new atrium has been proposed to accommodate the needs of the Barnstable Land Trusts proposed programs. The atrium would provide a well defined, ADA accessible entrance to the building. Design of the new atrium would apply to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for new exterior additions to historic properties. It is recommended that the atrium be constructed on the west façade, after the demolition of 2/3 of the southwest ells.

GuideStar, an online service that provides information on nonprofit organizations in the United States, was used to identify all the nonprofit organizations in downtown Woonsocket, as well as who the executive directors are and the names of people on the board of directors. Internet research was also utilized to access the websites where the students could gather contact information. The names and contact information that were collected were listed in the reference document. The list, to the students’ best abilities, is a comprehensive cross sections of business owners, non-profit leaders, and political leaders.

The primary wood columns and secondary wall studs show a variety of conditions. Most notably, the columns at the foundation level have been cut to remove rotted portions and are now supported by concrete footings. The columns on the first floor level have been reinforced with additional pieces of wood. An additive process of building up the structure is evident, although it is not clear if this is historically original or the results of the repair efforts circa 2005.

“Rationalization Takes Command: Zeilenbau And The Politics Of Ciam,” Excerpt From Building Culture: Ernst May And The New Frankfurt Initiative, 1926-1931, Susan R. Henderson
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
Chapter seven, of Building Culture,"Rationalization Takes Command: Zeilenbau and the Politics of CIAM," addresses the New Frankfurt housing and settlement initiative at the onset of the depression of 1929. The shift into decline, saw some initiatives completed, others stifled, and new ones emerge. Thus the 1929 CIAM Congress held in Frankfurt began with performances of experimental music, poetry and dance, and ended with the consecration of the existence minimum as the new housing standard. Meanwhile, Ernst May pushed forward with a revised housing strategy based on the minimal dwelling, the existence minimum, and the superblock (Zeilenbau). The CIAM Congress …
Process And Making Of Landscape, Joseph Wood
Process And Making Of Landscape, Joseph Wood
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis seeks to focus its study on geological processes in nature as a tool to both make and read the landscape as if it were a novel; to uncover its myths and to allow the viewer to interpret its past. As Brad Cloepfil of the architecture practice Allied Works has stated, "A landscape that took some ten million years to form, millions of years before the appearance of man, is thereby nudged toward that most unique of human capacities; language." I claim that by extending the definition of making, earth driven processes can be used as tools to study, …
Improved Integrated Vegetation Management Strategies For Indiana Roadsides, Jamie Mariah Herold
Improved Integrated Vegetation Management Strategies For Indiana Roadsides, Jamie Mariah Herold
Open Access Theses
With over 90,000 miles of road in Indiana, it is important that adjoining vegetation be maintained for safety, road structure maintenance and aesthetics. An understanding of vegetation management tools, the disturbance they cause and the effect of that disturbance on the plant community are important when designing an integrated vegetation management (IVM) program. In this study, I examine multiple components of an IVM plan for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), including mowing regimes, selective broadleaf control, plant growth regulators and native species plantings.
The first portion of this study examines the use of herbicide and mowing at six sites …

Effect Of High-Volume Fly Ash On Shear Strength Of Concrete Beams, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Jeffery Volz, John Myers
Effect Of High-Volume Fly Ash On Shear Strength Of Concrete Beams, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Jeffery Volz, John Myers
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Every year concrete production exceeds 6.5 billion tons worldwide, nearly 1 ton for every man, woman, and child on the planet. In fact, concrete is used 10 times more than any other building material in the world, primarily because of its incredible versatility, availability, and relatively low cost. Unfortunately, the production of Portland cement - the key ingredient in concrete - generates approximately a pound of carbon dioxide for every pound of cement produced. One method of reducing concrete's carbon footprint is to replace a significant amount of the cement with fly ash, a by-product of coal-burning thermal power stations. …

Use Of Vacuum For The Stabilization Of Dry Sand Slopes, B. Bate, Limin Zhang
Use Of Vacuum For The Stabilization Of Dry Sand Slopes, B. Bate, Limin Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vacuum is proposed as a means for rescuing soil slopes showing signs of impending failure. Two aspects associated with the proposed method were studied: namely, the theory of airflow through dry soils and the effectiveness of vacuum for enhancing the stability of soil slopes. A model test device was developed, and two series of tests were carried out using this device. One was a series of tests on pore-air pressure distributions in dry sand slopes, and the second series involved dry sand slope stability tests. The results revealed that a vacuum (negative pore-air pressure) even as small as 20.4 kPa …

Effect Of Fly Ash On The Shear Strength Of Concrete Beams Without Shear Reinforcement, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Jeffery S. Volz, Carlos A. Ortega
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The following paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the shear strength of full-scale reinforced concrete beams constructed with both high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC)-concrete with at least 50% of the cement replaced with fly ash-and conventional concrete (CC). This study includes two HVFAC mixes and one CC mix. The two HVFAC mixes are identical except for the amount of Class C fly ash replacement of cement, with one mix replacing 50% of the cement with fly ash and the other replacing 70 %. The test matrix included 18 beams-six for each concrete type-with three different longitudinal reinforcement …

Introductory Review To The Special Issue: Shrinking Cities And Towns: Challenge And Responses, Andreas Luescher, Sujata Shetty
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
Cities and towns facing sustained population loss are being researched and discussed more than ever before. Once the focus of a relatively small group of architects and urban designers in Europe, these cities and towns are now being studied by scholars across the world. In a range of contexts - from a large, iconic city like Detroit, to a small village in Japan (described by Thomas Feldhoff in this issue), this phenomenon is being observed in unexpected places, and far more frequently than once imagined.
A wider population is engaging in this as well, as discussions of the future of …

Drawing As Architecture: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew J. Arkell
Drawing As Architecture: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew J. Arkell
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
This project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea; in other words, the motivation was to create a drawing that was architecture. When the drawing is the research, however, the conclusions found are necessarily different from the earliest goals pursued. There comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural or, at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture.
