Baye Fadioul Niang: A Brief Biography Of An Ebeniste In Senegal, Katie Jo Niang
Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity
Baye Fadioul Niang described himself as a traditional European designer of wood furniture, doors, and trim. In 1945, at age 22, Fadioul began designing furniture as an apprentice in the state labor department of Kaolack. He settled in Dakar, where Fadioul not only designed and constructed furniture, but was a popular informal educator in the business. His furniture shop became a center for education in Menuserie and Ebenisterie, which is the art of furniture making. In 2005 Fadioul retired from furniture making because of deteriorating eyesight. Includes photos taken in February 2013 in Dakar, Senegal.

Why Are Property Boundary Disputes Increasing In Ireland?, Daragh O'Brien, William P. Prendergast
Conference Papers
Recent anecdotal evidence has shown that property boundary disputes have been on the increase over the past number of years (Prendergast 2008 and 2011). This paper will highlight results from a questionnaire to Irish property professionals in an effort to understand what they have been dealing with over the past number of years, including the impact of the PRAi Digital Mapping Project on their work, the most common type of dispute they deal with, the length of time they devote to property boundary disputes in the past 10 years and the number of Boundary Surveys conducted between 2007 – 2011.
The Economic Impact Of Commensal Rodents On Small Businesses In Manhattan’S Chinatown: Trends And Possible Causes, Anthony Almeida, Robert Corrigan, Ronald Sarno
The Economic Impact Of Commensal Rodents On Small Businesses In Manhattan’S Chinatown: Trends And Possible Causes, Anthony Almeida, Robert Corrigan, Ronald Sarno
Suburban Sustainability
Given the history of well-documented rodent infestations in New York City we were interested in assessing the economic impact of rats and mice on small businesses in The Lower East Side of Manhattan. Via mailed surveys and on-site interviews , we quantified damage to structures, loss of saleable goods and merchandise, the cost of pest-control professionals, and/or self-applied poison/traps. Overall, 16% of business (n = 76) responded to our queries. To those businesses reporting some level of rodent damage, average losses included $513 in merchandise, $726 in pest-control fees, $371 in repair costs to structure, and $125 in do-it-yourself deployment …

Because embassies increasingly function as symbols instead of diplomatic outposts it is necessary to question their effectiveness as diplomatic tools in a global society. If the United States intends to maintain physical diplomatic outposts as part of its foreign policy, then it will require reducing the collateral that is associated with such dangerous missions. While security enhancements have improved the safety and welfare of the Foreign Service in the past, persistent attacks question the relevancy of this approach. Architecture and Urbanism should be included in as possible, if not probable and appropriate, solutions to this difficult problem.
The Creation Of Sense Of Place: Negotiating The Divide Between Nature And Culture Through Phenomenological Architecture, Gabriel Nolle
The Creation Of Sense Of Place: Negotiating The Divide Between Nature And Culture Through Phenomenological Architecture, Gabriel Nolle
Architecture Thesis Prep
"The project I am proposing seeks to explore phenomenological architecture as a medium between culture and nature in order for humans to regain a sense of place in the natural world. While recent trends in architecture, namely sustainability, seek to emphasize environmental consciousness, the subjective relationship to the environment – how it affects our senses – remains the one we know least about. The process of designing and constructing buildings in the natural world must respond to conditions of nature in terms of site, material, purpose and form, to answer the demands of the human-nature condition. At …

Los Angeles has spread out too far and needs to adjust its urban strategy in terms of higher density develpments and compact urban nuclei.
These nuclei will establish more defined city centers with locally available amenities, thereby decreasing Angelino’s reliance on an overtaxed private transportation infrastructure. To sustain these centers there is a need to increase both population and housing density. Courtyard housing is the ideal typological model to remedy the situation. The Courtyard model, additional allocation of public space, and encentivised public transportation are key to achieving the best possible results.
Re-evaluate Los Angeles through a Freudian filter, identifying …

Waiting As Remedy: The Architecture Of Emergent Care, Jack Mccarrick
Architecture Thesis Prep
While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides insured care to a much larger group of Americans, it has the potential to reduce the quality of care provided to patients, particularly in emergency departments. This research will argue for a reimagining of the emergency department in which there is a definitive split between the architectural implications of spaces where technical care is administered for biological needs (the emergency room) and spaces where primary and implied care can satisfy the psychological desires of inappropriate patients (the waiting room) in order to better serve appropriate patients.
Filling The Gap: The Effect Of Temporary Environments On Deteriorated Cities, David Caballero
Filling The Gap: The Effect Of Temporary Environments On Deteriorated Cities, David Caballero
Architecture Thesis Prep
The project I’m proposing will analyze the effect of temporary environments on deteriorated cities that have been damaged environmentally and economically. While attempts have been made to motivate cities through the use of vacant and public space, “research on temporary urbanism is still in its infancy”. I claim that temporary architecture, if ideally placed, can alleviate the strain placed on communities from environmental and economic disasters. I will demonstrate that temporal space is the needed structure for human cultural permanence and preservation.

The design of an architecture typology of a coffee cooperative center will be able to increase the efficiency of benefits for these farmers. The center will serve as a place of cultural exchange and mitigation between family farmers, and the world of the international market. It achieves this by being based upon two main design problems: (1) that formally, there is a disjunction between what farmers perceive as desirable architecture for “western” coffee buyers and their own physically successful construction methods, and (2) providing classroom spaces to teach farmers about the business of trading as well as teaching buyers about …

Crooked And Narrow Streets, Amy Johnson
Crooked And Narrow Streets, Amy Johnson
Art Faculty Scholarship
In The Crooked and Narrow Streets of the Town of Boston (1920), historian and social reformer Annie Haven Thwing documents the development of Boston's streets in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. She illustrates her text with stock photographs depicting these ancient alleys lined with nineteenth-century tenement buildings. This juxtaposition of colonial and modern Boston through text and image privileges the city as a historical site, significantly doing so at a time when Bostonians were grappling with the concerns of twentieth-century urbanism, such as overcrowding, urban reform, and historic preservation.

A Downtown Revitalization Study For Woodruff, South Carolina, Alyson Leslie, Annemarie Jacques
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Woodruff is a small town in South Carolina that has declined since the closing of two major textile mills in the 1980s that once were its economic drivers. Economic decline has led to the physical deterioration of the buildings and streetscape elements on Woodruff’s Main Street. The conditions of a town’s Main Street reflect the identity of the town as a whole, particularly in a town the size of Woodruff with a total land area of 3.9 square miles. A component specific to Woodruff that emphasizes the necessity for a high quality downtown is the high volume of daily traffic …

Our ability to produce food in a sustainable, healthy and humane manner is threatened, both in the United States and on the global scale. This difficulty is exacerbated by expected population growth, creating a need for 60% more food worldwide by 2050 to feed a population of 9.3 billion. How we produce food affects local economies, the cultural vitality of communities, and the health of regional ecosystems. Industrial or conventional agriculture is damaging all three of these systems by draining local economies through corporate business practices, isolating farmers and attributing to rural population losses, while depleting natural resources and polluting …

Planning Bicycle Infrastructure Based On Quickest Route Method, Olena Tokmylenko
Planning Bicycle Infrastructure Based On Quickest Route Method, Olena Tokmylenko
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Current bicycle models assume average speed along the route and among routes and travel time is proportional to distance. There is no method that determines realistic cycling time based on change in speed due to topography. Our research proposes a model for the development of bicycle infrastructure based on reducing travel time and level of difficulty. We identified that topography, human power, and riding speed have strong relationship and we developed bicycle travel time model where speed is a function of human power and topography. We solved the shortest route problem with time impedance where time was computed based on …

Quarters A At The Old Charleston Navy Yard: A Historic Interior Furnishing And Interpretive Plan, Wendy Madill, Charlotte Causey, Amy Elizabeth Uebel, Mary Margaret Schley, Julia Tew
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Charleston's Naval Yard resembles a ghost town today, but it was once the city’s most active industrial district. It employed thousands of South Carolina workers who built warships and Navy infrastructure throughout the 1900s. When the Admiral presided over this bustling base, he lived at Quarters A. This social epicenter hosted military ceremonies, weddings, and PR visits from celebrities. Charles Lindbergh, Helen Keller, and FDR are some of the notables who walked these halls—halls that are now silent. Since the 1996 decommissioning of the base, Quarters A faces deterioration. Although exterior condition is poor, the interior is well-preserved. The purpose …

The City of Bell, a charter city of Los Angeles County, is a densely-developed community located approximately eight miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles. The City is composed of two distinct districts; the original “center city” is the residential and commercial core of the City, while industrial uses are concentrated in the Cheli Industrial Area to the northeast. The two districts are connected by a narrow strip of land along the Los Angeles River and the I-710 Freeway. Bell is relatively small in area—2.81 square miles, or 1,798 acres. With a population of 35,477 in 2010, its population density is …

The Regional Exchange: From Main Street To Shopping Mall To App Info-Structure, Christoper R. Depalma
Architecture Senior Theses
The current switch that has now made the shopping center model vulnerable to yet another evolution is the smartphone, which, since its introduction has become an essential component to American lifestyle even more quickly than the car, changing the way in which people engage in both social and commercial activity. Unlike their response to the automobile switch, if architects can recognize and accept the smartphone as a evolutionary tool, then they can take a center role in designing the next major regional exchange. This new social and commercial regional spatial organizer is still desired to be a physical place, however …

Water is an essential element to human development and urban vitality. As a response to future oil depletion in cities, a new appearance of water emerges in cities: Hydro-urbanism. Through rethinking the potential of water infrastructure in cities, HydroUrbanism situates itself as a spectacular functional event that aims to collect, purify, store, and generate energy within a city. The project reconsiders the production process of water on the periphery of the city and hypothesizes for an integrated process of the production of water to work within the city at an urban scale. Exposing the water infrastructure, fantasizing water, and re-connecting …

Fashioning The Unfashionable: An Architecture Of Waste, Alyson Canal
Architecture Senior Theses
It is evident that there exists a connection between architecture and fashion, and more significantly fashion and waste. Fashioning a material recovery facility through exhibition space, art, and social interaction will bring infrastructure back into the designed environment while maintaining an industrial identity that the site demands. Designing an architecture of waste through the cultural ideologies of fashion facilitates collectivity and public engagement.

Beyond The Object: The Phenomenon Of Memory In Architecture, Greg Bencivengo
Architecture Senior Theses
Situated in Chicago, IL, the process of commemoration will be realized as a set of architectural pavilions, each reconstructing a critical moment from the city's past. Said events will be selected for their influence on Chicago's development and should be commemorated on the sites at which they occured. As a series of episodes throughout the city, the architecture will emphasize the interdependence of present and past events, of memory and perception, and of collective memory and architectural experience.
The goal is not to replace our understanding of collective memory, but through fostering an awareness of self and one's relationship to …
Residential Square In The 21st Century: Applying A Typology To Create A New Urban Morphology, Elizabeth Whittington
Residential Square In The 21st Century: Applying A Typology To Create A New Urban Morphology, Elizabeth Whittington
Architecture Senior Theses
The transposition of the residential square will be part of a large-scale strategic plan for the re-development of low-rise low-density neighborhoods on the fringe of the central business district in the post-industrial city. A community garden will be defined by a public housing project. Thus, the neighborhood’s identity will be presented through the physical landscape, building volumes and façade. The project will become part of the system of communal spaces within the city. American individualism will express the civic realm, while creating a secure and connected environment. The new housing block provides a proto-type for an urban morphology that decreases …
