Geometric Control Of Inflatable Surfaces, Isaac John Scherrer 2012 University of Kentucky

Geometric Control Of Inflatable Surfaces, Isaac John Scherrer

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

High precision inflatable surfaces were introduced when NASA created the ECHO 1 Balloon in 1960. The experiment proved that inflatable structures were a feasible alternative to their rigid counterparts for high precision applications. Today inflatable structures are being used in aviation and aerospace applications and the benefits of using such structures are being recognized. Inflatable structures used in high precision structures require the inflatable surfaces to have controllable and predictable geometries. Many applications such as solar sails and radar reflectors require the surface of such structures to have a uniform surfaces as such surfaces improve the efficiency of the structure. …

Experimental Benchmarking Of Surface Textured Lip Seal Models, Wei Li 2012 University of Kentucky

Experimental Benchmarking Of Surface Textured Lip Seal Models, Wei Li

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

A thorough investigation on the existing hydrodynamic lubrication theories and the reverse pumping theories for the conventional lip seal is conducted. On that basis, the algorithms and the methods used in the numerical modeling of the conventional lip seal are modified and applied to the study of the lip seal running against surface textured shafts. For each step of the study, the numerical model is benchmarked against the experimental results. Important physical mechanisms which explain the reverse pumping ability of the triangular surface structures are revealed. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the numerical model is tested. In general, the numerical simulation …

This thesis presents a new metric-based Life-cycle Assessment (LCA) method for assessing the sustainability performance of metallic automotive components. The unique feature of this research work include the development and use of a metrics-based product sustainability index (ProdSI) methodology by considering the total life-cycle approach and the triple bottom line (TBL) with the 6R methodology. It has been shown that the manufactured product’s sustainability performance can be comprehensively assessed using this new methodology. The major focus of this research is the integration of the 6R activities (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Redesign and Remanufacture). Four life-cycle stages of the …

Transport Phenomena Associated With Liquid Metal Flow Over Topographically Modified Surfaces, WEN LIU 2012 University of Kentucky

Transport Phenomena Associated With Liquid Metal Flow Over Topographically Modified Surfaces, Wen Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Brazing and soldering, as advanced manufacturing processes, are of significant importance to industrial applications. It is widely accepted that joining by brazing or soldering is possible if a liquid metal wets the solids to be joined. Wetting, hence spreading and capillary action of liquid metal (often called filler) is of significant importance. Good wetting is required to distribute liquid metal over/between the substrate materials for a successful bonding.

Topographically altered surfaces have been used to exploit novel wetting phenomena and associated capillary actions, such as imbibitions (a penetration of a liquid front over/through a rough, patterned surface). Modification of surface …

Finite Element Analysis Of Cancellous Bone, Lucas T. Wilkerson 2012 University of Kentucky

Finite Element Analysis Of Cancellous Bone, Lucas T. Wilkerson

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

A variety of pathologies exist which increase the likelihood of bone fracture. Present methods for determining the fracture risk of a specific patient are based exclusively on the amount of bone present. While the quantity of bone tissue is correlated with strength, it neglects to account for bone’s intricate microarchitecture. To assess the effect of bone quality on strength, a methodology was developed for the structural analysis of cancellous bone biopsies. Thirty biopsies were selected from a pre-existing biopsy bank, and scanned using a SCANCO µCT-40 at a resolution of 30 microns. Cortical bone was removed from the resulting three-dimensional …

Design And Flight Testing Of A Warping Wing For Autonomous Flight Control, Edward Brady Doepke 2012 University of Kentucky

Design And Flight Testing Of A Warping Wing For Autonomous Flight Control, Edward Brady Doepke

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Inflatable-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have the ability to be packed in a fraction of their deployed volume. This makes them ideal for many deployable UAV designs, but inflatable wings can be flexible and don’t have conventional control surfaces. This thesis will investigate the use of wing warping as a means of autonomous control for inflatable wings. Due to complexities associated with manufacturing inflatable structures a new method of rapid prototyping deformable wings is used in place of inflatables to decrease cost and design-cycle time. A UAV testbed was developed and integrated with the warping wings and flown in a …

Low Reynolds Number Flow Field Modification Via Travelling Wave Actuation Of A Vertically Aligned Wire Array Surface, John C. Calhoun 2012 University of Kentucky

Low Reynolds Number Flow Field Modification Via Travelling Wave Actuation Of A Vertically Aligned Wire Array Surface, John C. Calhoun

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Experiments were conducted to observe the effects of an active wire surface on low-Reynolds number Poiseuille flow. The objective was to evaluate the feasibility of actuating piezoelectric nanowires into a travelling wave motion in order to reduce wall shear stress in turbulent flows. Studies have shown that travelling wave motions introduced into the bounding wall of turbulent flow can reduce wall shear stress by disrupting the formation of drag-inducing coherent vortical structures. A Reynolds number scaled flow facility was designed to represent the near-wall region of turbulent flow. A wire surface was installed in the bounding wall and dynamically actuated …

Root Locus Techniques With Nonlinear Gain Parameterization, Brandon Wellman 2012 University of Kentucky

Root Locus Techniques With Nonlinear Gain Parameterization, Brandon Wellman

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This thesis presents rules that characterize the root locus for polynomials that are nonlinear in the root-locus parameter k. Classical root locus applies to polynomials that are affine in k. In contrast, this thesis considers polynomials that are quadratic or cubic in k. In particular, we focus on constructing the root locus for linear feedback control systems, where the closed-loop denominator polynomial is quadratic or cubic in k. First, we present quadratic root-locus rules for a controller class that yields a closed-loop denominator polynomial that is quadratic in k. Next, we develop cubic root-locus rules …

Aerodynamics And Control Of A Deployable Wing Uav For Autonomous Flight, Michael Thamann 2012 University of Kentucky

Aerodynamics And Control Of A Deployable Wing Uav For Autonomous Flight, Michael Thamann

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

UAV development and usage has increased dramatically in the last 15 years. In this time frame the potential has been realized for deployable UAVs to the extent that a new class of UAV was defined for these systems. Inflatable wing UAVs provide a unique solution for deployable UAVs because they are highly packable (some collapsing to 5-10% of their deployed volume) and have the potential for the incorporation of wing shaping. In this thesis, aerodynamic coefficients and aileron effectiveness were derived from the equations of motion of aircraft as necessary parameters for autonomous flight. A wind tunnel experiment was performed …

Simulation Of A Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer With A Parylene Membrane And Graphene Electrodes, David Sadat 2012 University of Central Florida

Simulation Of A Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer With A Parylene Membrane And Graphene Electrodes, David Sadat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Medical ultrasound technology accounts for over half of all imaging tests performed worldwide. In comparison to other methods, ultrasonic imaging is more portable and lower cost, and is becoming more accessible to remote regions where traditionally no medical imaging can be done. However, conventional ultrasonic imaging systems still rely on expensive PZT-based ultrasound probes that limit broader applications. In addition, the resolution of PZT based transducers is low due to the limitation in hand-fabrication methods of the piezoelectric ceramics. Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (CMUTs) appears as an alternative to the piezoelectric (PZT) ceramic based transducer for ultrasound medical imaging. CMUTs …

The effects of an industrial gas turbine’s Exhaust Collector Box (ECB) geometry on static pressure recovery and total pressure loss were investigated in this study experimentally and computationally. This study aims to further understand how exit boundary conditions affect the performance of a diffuser system as well as the accuracy of industry standard computational models. A design of experiments approach was taken using a Box-Behnken design method for investigating three geometric parameters of the ECB. In this investigation, the exhaust diffuser remained constant through each test, with only the ECB being varied. A system performance analysis was conducted for each …

Evaporation, Precipitation Dynamics And Instability Of Acoustically Levitated Functional Droplets, Abhishek Saha 2012 University of Central Florida

Evaporation, Precipitation Dynamics And Instability Of Acoustically Levitated Functional Droplets, Abhishek Saha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Evaporation of pure and binary liquid droplets is of interest in thermal sprays and spray drying of food, ceramics and pharmaceutical products. Understanding the rate of heat and mass transfer in any drying process is important not only to enhance evaporation rate or vapor-gas mixing, but also to predict and control the final morphology and microstructure of the precipitates. Acoustic levitation is an alternative method to study micron-sized droplets without wall effects, which eliminates chemical and thermal contamination with surfaces. This work uses an ultrasonic levitation technique to investigate the vaporization dynamics under radiative heating, with focus on evaporation characteristics, …

Coupled Usage Of Discrete Hole And Transpired Film For Better Cooling Performance, Michael Torrance 2012 University of Central Florida

Coupled Usage Of Discrete Hole And Transpired Film For Better Cooling Performance, Michael Torrance

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electricity has become so ingrained in everyday life that the current generation has no knowledge of life without it. The majority of power generation in the United States is the result of turbines of some form. With such widespread utilization of these complex rotating machines, any increase in efficiency translates into improvements in the current cost of energy. These improvements manifest themselves as reductions in greenhouse emissions or possible savings to the consumer. The most important temperature regarding turbine performance is the temperature of the hot gas entering the turbine, denoted turbine inlet temperature. Increasing the turbine inlet temperature allows …

Towards Scalable Nanomanufacturing: Modeling The Interaction Of Charged Droplets From Electrospray Using Gpu, Weiwei Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrospray is an atomization method subject to intense study recently due to its monodispersity and the wide size range of droplets it can produce, from nanometers to hundreds of micrometers. This thesis focuses on the numerical and theoretical modeling of the interaction of charged droplets from the single and multiplexed electrospray. We studied two typical scenarios: large area film depositions using multiplexed electrospray and fine pattern printings assisted by linear electrostatic quadrupole focusing. Due to the high computation power requirement in the unsteady n-body problem, graphical processing unit (GPU) which delivers 10 Tera flops in computation power is used to …

The Effect Of Magnetic Bearing On The Vibration And Friction Of A Wind Turbine, Mark Ryan Vorwaller 2012 University of Central Florida

The Effect Of Magnetic Bearing On The Vibration And Friction Of A Wind Turbine, Mark Ryan Vorwaller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Demands for sustainable energy have resulted in increased interest in wind turbines. Thus, despite widespread economic difficulties, global installed wind power increased by over 20% in 2011 alone. Recently, magnetic bearing technology has been proposed to improve wind turbine performance by mitigating vibration and reducing frictional losses. While magnetic bearing has been shown to reduce friction in other applications, little data has been presented to establish its effect on vibration and friction in wind turbines. Accordingly, this study provides a functional method for experimentally evaluating the effect of a magnetic bearing on the vibration and efficiency characteristics of a wind …

Numerical Study On Reinforcement Mechanism Of Copper/Carbon Nanotubes Composite, Xiang Long 2012 University of Central Florida

Numerical Study On Reinforcement Mechanism Of Copper/Carbon Nanotubes Composite, Xiang Long

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because of its high stiffness, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as one of the widely used reinforcement materials in the metal matrix composites. In this thesis, finite element (FE) models were built in Ls-Dyna3D to simulate Copper/CNTs composite deformation and fracture, and to explore CNTs reinforcement mechanisms. Several possible mechanisms were discussed. Deformation and failure of Cu/CNT composites were studied numerically using unit cell FE models, which consist of both metal matrix and CNTs. The simulation results have been verified by existing experiment data reported by Chen’s group. The matrix material was modeled as elasto-plastic ductile solids. The CNTs material …

Implementation And Performance Comparisons For The Crisfield And Stiff Arc Length Methods In Fea, Thomas W. Silvers 2012 University of Central Florida

Implementation And Performance Comparisons For The Crisfield And Stiff Arc Length Methods In Fea, Thomas W. Silvers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) applied to structures, displacements at which the tangent stiffness matrix KT becomes singular are called critical points, and correspond to instabilities such as buckling or elastoplastic softening (e.g., necking). Prior to the introduction of Arc Length Methods (ALMs), critical points posed severe computational challenges, which was unfortunate since behavior at instabilities is of great interest as a precursor to structural failure. The original ALM was shown to be capable in some circumstances of continued computation at critical points, but limited success and unattractive features of the formulation were noted and addressed in extensive subsequent …

Deformation And Phase Transformation Processes In Polycrystalline Niti And Nitihf High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys, Othmane Benafan 2012 University of Central Florida

Deformation And Phase Transformation Processes In Polycrystalline Niti And Nitihf High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys, Othmane Benafan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The unique ability of shape memory alloys (SMAs) to remember and recover their original shape after large deformation offers vast potential for their integration in advanced engineering applications. SMAs can generate recoverable shape changes of several percent strain even when opposed by large stresses owing to reversible deformation mechanisms such as twinning and stress-induced martensite. For the most part, these alloys have been largely used in the biomedical industry but with limited application in other fields. This limitation arises from the complexities of prevailing microstructural mechanisms that lead to dimensional instabilities during repeated thermomechanical cycling. Most of these mechanisms are …
