Diesel engines are an important aspect of our transportation infrastructure, whose performance is greatly affected by the characteristics of the spray from their injectors. Characterization of the injector’s spray is therefore tantamount to clean-running efficient diesel motors. In this study, a ~15 ps pulsed Leopard D-10 laser is used along with an optical Kerr Cell to realize ballistic images of high-delivery-pressure dodecane sprays injected into a quiescent air environment at elevated temperature and pressure. Using CS2 as the Kerr switching media and by optimizing the overlap of the gate and imaging beams, an effective high speed shuttering effect is obtained. …

A Material System For Reliable Low Voltage Anodic Electrowetting, Mehdi Khodayari, Jose Carballo, Nathan B. Crane
Faculty Publications
Electrowetting on dielectric is demonstrated with a thin spin-coated fluoropolymer over an aluminum electrode. Previous efforts to use thin spin-coated dielectric layers for electrowetting have shown limited success due to defects in the layers. However, when used with a citric acid electrolyte and anodic voltages, repeatable droplet actuation is achieved for 5000 cycles with an actuation of just 10 V. This offers the potential for low voltage electrowetting systems that can be manufactured with a simple low-cost process.
A Comparative Study Of Segmented Tungsten Rod Penetration Into A Thick Steel Target Plate,

A Comparative Study Of Segmented Tungsten Rod Penetration Into A Thick Steel Target Plate, Michael Bryant Presnell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents results from computational simulations of tungsten alloy segmented rod projectiles (SRP) penetrating an RHA semi-infinite target plate at high velocities. Penetration experimental data show improved penetration efficiency by the segmented projectiles when compared to monolithic (single solid rod) projectiles. For SRP with an aspect ratio (L/D) = 1/8, a loss in penetration efficiency was seen upon successive segment impacts. A numerical simulation impacting tungsten heavy alloy against RHA 4340 steel was performed using the Lagrangian finite element code EPIC 2006. The impact configuration that was modeled consisted of eight successive collinear impacts of discs measured 2mm in …

Smart Nanocoated Structure For Energy Harvesting At Low Frequency Vibration, Sudhanshu Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increasing demands of energy which is cleaner and has an unlimited supply has led development in the field of energy harvesting. Piezoelectric materials can be used as a means of transforming ambient vibrations into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power other devices. With the recent surge of micro scale devices, piezoelectric power generation can provide a convenient alternative to traditional power sources. In this research, a piezoelectric power generator composite prototype was developed to maximize the power output of the system. A lead zirconate titanate (PZT) composite structure was formed and mounted on a cantilever bar …

Free Vibration Analyses Of Abs (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) Rectangular Plates With Completely Free Boundary Conditions, Mehmet Akif Dundar
Wayne State University Theses
Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) represents a family of engineering thermoplastics with a wide field of performance characteristics. ABS materials have been receiving a great deal of attention because of their unique properties, such as outstanding formability, high tensile strength and stiffness, very high impact strength, excellent ductility, excellent high and low temperature performance, and resistant to many chemicals and plasticizers. Particularly, ABS exhibits really high impact strength; therefore, it is used in industry products which require high impact strength materials, such as military helmets and construction safety helmets. The vibration analyses of ABS rectangular plates are incredibly significant for design in military …
Contact Pressure Distribution Of Osteochondral Defects Of The Knee: Effects Of Non-Vertical Walls,

Contact Pressure Distribution Of Osteochondral Defects Of The Knee: Effects Of Non-Vertical Walls, Scott Ensminger
Wayne State University Theses
Purpose: To examine the relationship between well-shouldered osteochondral defects and
defects of different geometries by studying their effects on rim stress concentration and
load redistribution in the human knee.
Methods: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knees were mounted at 30° of flexion in a materials
testing machine. Digital electronic pressure sensors were placed in the medial and lateral
compartments of the knee. Dynamic pressure readings were recorded throughout the
loading and holding phases as each knee was loaded to 700N and held for 5 seconds.
Artificial defects were created in each knee to simulate well-shouldered defects and
beveled-defects. Loading was repeated for …

Investigation Into The Usability Of Micromechanical Models To Predict The Behavior Of A Nanocomposite Polymer, Jason Handlogten
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the acceptability of a set of existing nanocomposite test specimens for tensile testing and then to determine the Young's and shear modulus of these test specimens. If the test specimens were found to be acceptable, the accuracy of three micromechanical models was to be evaluated by comparing their predictions to the mechanical properties determined from testing the specimens. The set of existing nanocomposite test specimens had a distinct concave shape on two surfaces that were believed to be intended as flat. In order to determine if they adhered to the Type I …

On 11 March 2011, the Tohoku Tsunami overtopped a weir and penetrated 49 km up the Kitakami River, the fourth largest river in Japan. Similarly, the 2010 Chile tsunami propagated at least 15 km up the Maule River. In the Pacific Northwest of the United States, large tsunamis have occurred along the Cascadia subduction zone, most recently the 'orphan tsunami' of 1700 (Atwater et al.). The expected future occurrence of a Cascadia tsunami and its penetration into the Lower Columbia River became the subject of “the Workshop on Tsunami Hydrodynamics in a Large River” held in Corvallis, Oregon, 2011. We …

The Design And Development Of A Substitution Device For The Visually Impaired., Kieran John O'Callaghan
Theses
Current sensory substitution systems for the visually impaired are limited in terms of their spatial and depth resolution capabilities. They are unable to relay real-time 3D spatial information regarding objects in the direct path of the user. Recent advances in 3D imaging technology have presented new opportunities to develop improved sensory substitution systems to compensate for visual sensory loss. The present study established the design criteria, designed, manufactured and evaluated the performance of a real-time vision substitution device called VisionRE.
Knowledge obtained from a literature review of Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), feedback from visually impaired focus groups and 3D electrode …

The field emission characteristics of niobium electrodes were compared to those of stainless steel electrodes using a DC high voltage field emission test apparatus. A total of eight electrodes were evaluated: two 304 stainless steel electrodes polished to mirrorlike finish with diamond grit and six niobium electrodes (two single-crystal, two large-grain, and two fine-grain) that were chemically polished using a buffered-chemical acid solution. Upon the first application of high voltage, the best large-grain and single-crystal niobium electrodes performed better than the best stainless steel electrodes, exhibiting less field emission at comparable voltage and field strength. In all cases, field emission …

This paper reviews some subtleties in time-delay systems of neutral type that are believed to be of particular relevance in practice. Both traditional formulation and the coupled differential-difference equation formulation are used. The discontinuity of the spectrum as a function of delays is discussed. Conditions to guarantee stability under small parameter variations are given. A number of subjects that have been discussed in the literature, often using different methods, are reviewed to illustrate some fundamental concepts. These include systems with small delays, the sensitivity of Smith predictor to small delay mismatch, and the discrete implementation of distributed-delay feedback control. The …
