A Computational Method For Analysis Of Material Properties Of A Non-Pneumatic Tire And Their Effects On Static Load Deflection, Vibration And Energy Loss From Impact Rolling Over Obstacles, Akshay Narasimhan 2010 Clemson University

A Computational Method For Analysis Of Material Properties Of A Non-Pneumatic Tire And Their Effects On Static Load Deflection, Vibration And Energy Loss From Impact Rolling Over Obstacles, Akshay Narasimhan

All Theses

One of the potential sources of vibration during rolling of a non pneumatic tire is the buckling phenomenon and snapping back of the spokes in tension when they enter and exit the contact zone. Another source of noise was hypothesized due to a flower pedal ring vibration effect due to discrete spoke interaction with the ring and contact with the ground during rolling as the spokes cycle between tension and compression. Transmission of vibration between the ground force, ring and spokes to the hub was also considered to be a significant contributor to vibration and noise characteristics of the Tweel. …

Incorporating Function Structures Into Morphological Charts: A User Study, Jenkins Richardson iii 2010 Clemson University

Incorporating Function Structures Into Morphological Charts: A User Study, Jenkins Richardson Iii

All Theses

A morphological chart is an ideation tool that represents a large qualitative design space. Currently, morphological charts use a function list to as the function representation of the design problem. Using the morphological chart means (solutions) that can perform each function are generated. Combining one means from each function produces an integrated conceptual design solution. By repeating this process with all possible combination contained in the morphological chart, a long list of conceptual design solutions will be generated, although not all will be practical. This long list of potential design solutions is difficult to analyze and there are limited systematic …

A Study Of The Statistics Of The Air/Water Interfacial Temperature Field During Mixed Convection Heat Transfer, Jie Kou 2010 Clemson University

A Study Of The Statistics Of The Air/Water Interfacial Temperature Field During Mixed Convection Heat Transfer, Jie Kou

All Dissertations

Heat transfer across an air/water interface is of particular importance to limnology, oceanography and some industrial applications. The relationship between the statistics of the air/water interfacial temperature field and the interfacial heat flux is poorly understood, particularly for the mixed convection condition, which is a common heat transfer mechanism for small inland lakes. The few studies that have been conducted under mixed convection conditions have been limited to an uncontrolled surfactant condition (tap water). Therefore, in this dissertation research two sets of experiments for wind speeds from 0 to 4 m/s were conducted: controlled surfactant contaminated conditions (with oleyl alcohol) …

Improved Mobile Wireless In Vivo Surgical Robots: Modular Design, Experimental Results, And Analysis, Jeff Hawks

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Laparoscopic surgery results in superior patient outcomes as measured by less painful recovery and an earlier return to functional health compared to conventional open surgery. However, the difficulty of manipulating laparoscopic tools from outside the patient’s body generally limits these benefits to patients undergoing relatively simple procedures. The use of miniature in vivo robots that fit entirely inside the peritoneal cavity represents a novel approach to laparoscopic surgery. These robots enable more complex laparoscopic procedures, increasing the number of patients that benefit from laparoscopic surgery.

This thesis describes recent work focused on developing a modular wireless mobile platform that can …

The gloves were created using silicone rubber to simulate both the texture and look of human skin, while maintaining both flexibility and durability. The sensor outputs were buffered by high-impedance voltage-following operational amplifiers, and then read sequentially using a multiplexing scheme by a microcontroller. Sensor …

Plasticity And Damage In Bimodal Grain Size Al-5083: Microstructural Finite Element, Steven Nelson 2010 Utah State University

Plasticity And Damage In Bimodal Grain Size Al-5083: Microstructural Finite Element, Steven Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bimodal and nanocrystalline aluminum alloys are being investigated as stronger replacements for conventional polycrystalline aluminum alloys. Higher strengths are achieved by reducing the grain size of a metal; however, as the grain size is reduced the ductility diminishes. One solution that limits this decrease in ductility is the addition of a few microcrystalline grains into a nanocrystalline alloy, creating a bimodal microstructure that offers a better balance of strength and ductility. Two- and three-dimensional microstructural finite element (FE) simulations of monotonic and fatigue failures in Al-5083 having bimodal grain structures are conducted. To reduce the computational time and facilitate the …

Spatial Light Dilution As A Technique For Conversion Of Solar Energy To Algal Biomass, Daniel J. Dye 2010 Utah State University

Spatial Light Dilution As A Technique For Conversion Of Solar Energy To Algal Biomass, Daniel J. Dye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A photobioreactor has been designed and developed to efficiently utilize solar irradiance through spatial dilution of sunlight. The concept of spatial light dilution is simple: incident sunlight is spread over a large surface area, thus reducing the photon flux density of the light. The implementation of this technique, however, is difficult. The reactor described within uses a new approach to spatial light dilution, utilizing recently-developed optical components to diffuse concentrated sunlight inside an algae culture. Preliminary productivity tests indicate a 2-3 fold increase in productivity per unit aperture (sunlight collection area) over a control reactor with direct-sunlight. Aperture productivity of …
