Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Ikuza Island in Kagera-Tanzania faces lack of electricity due to cost challenges of extending the grid by marine cables and other transmission facilities. These makes such endeavour not appealing to the supply authority due to those higher charges. Therefore, this paper undertakes to design hybrid renewable energy sources for the island by specifically focusing on the buck-boost converter for the energy conversion from these renewable resources. The design of the bidirectional buck-boost converter for maximum power point tracking in off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems is multifaceted due to the inhomogeneity nature of the renewable energy sources. The bidirectional buck-boost converter, …

Phase-change phenomenon is ubiquitous in nature and widely utilized in thermal management of computer chips. Flat heat pipes have been extensively used in thermal management of microelectronic devices. However, existing research mainly concentrates on developing numerical models and lacks a systematic analytical approach to elucidate the working mechanism of flat heat pipes. We consider a horizontal flat heat pipe with an idealized porous wick. The pores in the wick are straight circular capillaries running along and across the wick and are filled with a liquid. The rest of the pipe is filled with its vapor. The mass evaporative rate at …

Heat And Mass Transfer Modeling Of High-Temperature Moving-Bed Thermochemical Reactors, David Korba
Theses and Dissertations
With the global deployment of renewable energy generation at record rates, clean energy is steadily becoming competitive with its fossil-fuel counterparts. However, further expansion is limited by the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, wave, etc.), which typically do not match with daily and seasonal variations of global (and local) energy demand. Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) has demonstrated strong potential in being a technological pathway to provide on-demand process heat and handle the intrinsic variations in renewable energy generation and energy demand. TCES works on the premise of excess renewable heat driving an endothermic reduction reaction, in which …

With the development of micro-sensors and wireless applications, energy harvesting has become an effective method for self-powering. However, ambient energy is only limited to below 100Hz, which restricts the energy harvester designs to this range resulting in
an impractical bulky and large-scale harvester. Therefore, in this thesis, we investigated
frequency Up and Down conversion energy harvesters to benefit from the high-frequency oscillations and transferred them to the ambient vibration ranges. Toward this, the triboelectric transduction mechanism has been utilized for a frequency-up conversion for energy harvesting applications, while the piezoelectric transduction mechanism is used for frequency-down
conversion for mass sensing …
