Reducing Multiple Access Interference In Broadband Multi-User Wireless Networks, Ali Nayef Alqatawneh 2015 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Reducing Multiple Access Interference In Broadband Multi-User Wireless Networks, Ali Nayef Alqatawneh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is devoted to developing multiple access interference (MAI) reduction techniques for multi-carrier multi-user wireless communication networks.

In multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems, a full multipath diversity can be achieved by transmitting one symbol over multiple orthogonal subcarriers by means of spreading codes. However, in frequency selective fading channels, orthogonality among users can be destroyed leading to MAI. MAI represents the main obstacle to support large number of users in multi-user wireless systems. Consequently, MAI reduction becomes a main challenge when designing multi-carrier multi-user wireless networks. In this dissertation, first, we study MC-CDMA systems with different existing …

Common Mode Filtering With Metamaterial-Inspired Structures, Sang G. Kang 2015 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Common Mode Filtering With Metamaterial-Inspired Structures, Sang G. Kang

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications

High-speed digital communication links typically employ differential signaling as an alternative to single ended signaling. The design challenge using these differential lines are that perfect symmetry in the signals sent and in the physical communication line must be maintained to prevent some of the differential mode signal’s energy to be converted to a common-mode signal. The main objective of a common-mode filter is to filter out this common-mode noise while leaving the differential signal intact. Our strategy in this project was to look into past work on common Electric Field Magnetic Field Common Mode Signal Differential Mode Signal Magnetic Field …

For a lossless dispersive chiral material, negative index (NIM) occurred only by use of parametric analysis (and not via practical models) to first-order. These findings are re-visited for the lossy problem and the results are compared.

Universal Uav Payload Interface, Nolan Reker, David Troy Jr, Drew Troxell 2015 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Universal Uav Payload Interface, Nolan Reker, David Troy Jr, Drew Troxell

Computer Engineering

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology is becoming increasingly accessible for civilian use. Both open-source and commercial-purpose UAVs can be obtained affordably or even built. However, the platforms available are very segmented in their customization to a specific application (i.e. land surveying, payload delivery). This project aims to create a Universal Payload Interface (UPI) mounted to the underside of multi-rotors or other UAVs to enable the attachment of customizable sensor payloads. These payloads allow a single UAV to be rapidly reconfigured to perform a multitude of tasks.

The Universal Payload Interface facilitates communication between the payload, onboard flight controller, and operator …

A Modular Approach For Key-Frame Selection In Wide Area Surveillance Video Analysis, Almabrok Essa, Paheding Sidike, Vijayan K. Asari 2015 University of Dayton

A Modular Approach For Key-Frame Selection In Wide Area Surveillance Video Analysis, Almabrok Essa, Paheding Sidike, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents an efficient preprocessing algorithm for big data analysis. Our proposed key-frame selection method utilizes the statistical differences among subsequent frames to automatically select only the frames that contain the desired contextual information and discard the rest of the insignificant frames.

We anticipate that such key frame selection technique will have significant impact on wide area surveillance applications such as automatic object detection and recognition in aerial imagery. Three real-world datasets are used for evaluation and testing and the observed results are encouraging.

The Electric Reel For Soccer Fields, Stephen Taylor 2015 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

The Electric Reel For Soccer Fields, Stephen Taylor

Electrical Engineering

Painting a soccer field consumes too much time. The process of reeling the string after laying out string along the field needs to improve. As a result, my project addresses improvements in how the workers retrieve the string through the production of an electric reel. This electric reel allows the worker to have control of the speed, direction, and on/off state of the device. Direction control allows the user ability to reel and unwind the string. Variable speed allows the user to control how fast the reel unwinds and reels the string. The device gathers string in an orderly manner …

Electrical Engineering

This is an ongoing design project being funded by Northrop Grumman in which Cal Poly SLO is working in collaboration with Cal Poly Pomona to complete a working design at the end of each academic school year. The project consists of two UAVs that can navigate around a given area without running into each other or other obstacles. There are sensors to be mounted on the vehicles that can detect objects within a given distance and a microcontroller is used to control how the vehicle responds to an object being detected. The avoidance code has been written for previous years’ …

Unmanned Aircraft Systems: Air-Ground Channel Characterization For Future Applications, David W. Matolak, Ruoyu Sun 2015 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Unmanned Aircraft Systems: Air-Ground Channel Characterization For Future Applications, David W. Matolak, Ruoyu Sun

Faculty Publications

Unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) are being used increasingly worldwide. These systems will operate in conditions that differ from conventional piloted aircraft, and this implies that the airground (AG) channel for UASs can differ significantly from the traditional, simple, AG channel models. After providing some background and motivation, we describe the AG channel features and our efforts in measuring and modeling the AG channel. Some example measurement and model results-for the path loss and the Ricean K-factor-are provided to illustrate some of the interesting AG channel characteristics that are still being investigated.

The contact lens consisted of an embedded antenna providing communication with a 2.4GHz system, as well as inductive charging at an operating frequency of 13.56 MHz. The lens utilized a CBC005 5µAh thin film battery by Cymbet and a manufactured graphene super capacitor as a power source. The custom integrated circuit (IC) was designed using the On Semiconductor CMOS C5 0.6 µm process to manage …

Segmentation Of Pulmonary Nodules In Computed Tomography Using A Regression Neural Network Approach And Its Application To The Lung Image Database Consortium And Image Database Resource Initiative Dataset, Temesguen Messay, Russell C. Hardie, Timothy R. Tuinstra 2015 University of Dayton

Tuinstra

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present new pulmonary nodule segmentation algorithms for computed tomography (CT). These include a fully-automated (FA) system, a semi-automated (SA) system, and a hybrid system. Like most traditional systems, the new FA system requires only a single user-supplied cue point. On the other hand, the SA system represents a new algorithm class requiring 8 user-supplied control points. This does increase the burden on the user, but we show that the resulting system is highly robust and can handle a variety of challenging cases. The proposed hybrid system starts with the FA system.

If improved segmentation results are needed, the SA …

Selective Body Biasing For Post-Silicon Tuning Of Sub-Threshold Designs: An Adaptive Filtering Approach, Hui Geng, Jianming Liu, Pei Wen Luo, Liang Chia Cheng, Steven L. Grant 2015 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Selective Body Biasing For Post-Silicon Tuning Of Sub-Threshold Designs: An Adaptive Filtering Approach, Hui Geng, Jianming Liu, Pei Wen Luo, Liang Chia Cheng, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sub-threshold design could provide a compelling approach to power critical applications. An exponential relationship exists, however, between the delay and the threshold voltage, that makes this design-time timing closure extremely difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. Several previous studies were focused on the technique of body biasing during post-silicon tuning for delay compensation. But they were mostly for super-threshold designs where spatially correlated L eff variation dominates. They cannot be applied directly to sub-threshold designs in which purely random threshold voltage variations dominate. These works also assumed multiple body biasing voltage domains and multiple body biasing voltage levels, which …

Energy Harvesting And Storage: The Catalyst To The Power Constraint For Leveraging Internet Of Things (Iot) On Trains, Kelechi Nwogu 2015 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Energy Harvesting And Storage: The Catalyst To The Power Constraint For Leveraging Internet Of Things (Iot) On Trains, Kelechi Nwogu

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The success of Wireless Sensor Networks is heavily constrained by its reliance on storage technology like batteries, which are a finite resource. Whilst the number of transistors in an IC doubles every 18 months, the energy density of batteries is relatively flat during the same time period. This is a key challenge in leveraging the Internet of Things on trains.

The gravity of this problem is increased by an order of magnitude when the network is to be scaled up to hundreds or thousands of nodes. Comprehensive research and development efforts have been devoted to building ultra-low power sensors. These …

Synthetic Aperture Radar: Rapid Detection Of Target Motion In Matlab, Daniel S. Kassen 2015 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Synthetic Aperture Radar: Rapid Detection Of Target Motion In Matlab, Daniel S. Kassen

Master's Theses

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has come into widespread use in several civilian and military applications. The focus of this paper is the military application of imaging point targets captured by an airborne SAR platform. Using the traditional SAR method of determining target motion by analyzing the difference between subsequent images takes a relatively large amount of processing resources. Using methods in this thesis, target motion can be estimated before even a single image is obtained, reducing the amount of time and power used by a significantly large amount. This thesis builds on work done by Brain Zaharri and David So. …

Echo Cancellation For Bone Conduction Transducers, Mohammadhossein Behgam, Steven L. Grant 2015 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Echo Cancellation For Bone Conduction Transducers, Mohammadhossein Behgam, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bone conducting transducers are attractive technologies for voice communication systems. Bone vibrators (BVs), typically located on the condyle bone, allow users to listen while leaving their outer ears open, enhancing situational awareness. Meanwhile, bone conduction microphones (BCMs), often located on the temple, increase the transmitted signal to noise ratio because they are relatively insensitive to ambient air born environmental noise. A communication headset consisting of a BV and a BCM is a natural combination of these promising technologies. The prospect of acoustic coupling between the BVs and BCMs results in acoustic echo if full-duplex communication is used. To our knowledge, …

Simple Secrecy: Analog Stream Cipher For Secure Voice Communication, John M. Campbell 2015 Liberty University

Simple Secrecy: Analog Stream Cipher For Secure Voice Communication, John M. Campbell

Senior Honors Theses

Voice signals are inherently analog, and some voice communication systems still utilize analog signals. Existing analog cryptographic methods do not satisfactorily provide cryptosecurity for communication systems due to several limitations. This paper proposes a novel means of provided cryptosecurity for analog signals without digitization; thereby avoiding the latency which results from ADC/DAC conversions. This method utilizes the principles of the digital stream cipher, generating instead a continuous pseudorandom analog key stream signal which is transformed with the original analog signal to create an encrypted ciphertext signal which is statistically independent of the original signal and the key stream signal. The …
