An Adaptive Approach To Gibbs’ Phenomenon, Jannatul Ferdous Chhoa 2020 The University of Southern Mississippi

An Adaptive Approach To Gibbs’ Phenomenon, Jannatul Ferdous Chhoa

Master's Theses

Gibbs’ Phenomenon, an unusual behavior of functions with sharp jumps, is encountered while applying the Fourier Transform on them. The resulting reconstructions have high frequency oscillations near the jumps making the reconstructions far from being accurate. To get rid of the unwanted oscillations, we used the Lanczos sigma factor to adjust the Fourier series and we came across three cases. Out of the three, two of them failed to give us the right reconstructions because either it was removing the oscillations partially but not entirely or it was completely removing them but smoothing out the jumps a little too much. …

Three-Dimensional (3d) Reconstruction Of Ultrasound Foetal Images Using Visualisation Toolkit (Vtk), Henry Dusim Grace Anabela

Student Works (2020-2029)

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound images has been used for easier analysing of anatomy related to abnormalities. 3D image reconstruction is required as it helps doctors interpret results and assess any defects quickly. Not only does it improve the accuracy of diagnosis, but it also saves a lot of time. In this thesis, 295 slices of 2D ultrasound images of a foetal are used to do 3D reconstruction using surface rendering, volume rendering, and multiplanar rendering technique. A similar software known as 3D Slicer is also used to reconstruct the ultrasound image for comparison purpose. VTK can easily …

Hybrid Microwave Power Amplifiers For Broadband Communication, Sangaran Pragash 2020 Universiti Malaya

Hybrid Microwave Power Amplifiers For Broadband Communication, Sangaran Pragash

Student Works (2020-2029)

The software-defined radio is the future of radio technology. The development of a broadband power amplifier is the most challenging radio component to design in achieving software-defined radio goals due to the PA gain-bandwidth limitation. The distributed power amplifier (DPA) overcomes the limitation by combining output power from several transistors in an additive fashion. Matrix Amplifier (MA) consists of two or more DPA stacked together in a multiplicative manner. In this project, a high power and high gain DPA for a two-way radio system is demonstrated. The DPA exhibits 10W output power and 32dB gain across the frequency range of …

Three-Dimensional (3d) Reconstruction Of Computed Tomography (Ct) Abdominal Images Using Visualization Toolkit (Vtk), Mat Saad Afifah Husna

Student Works (2020-2029)

A computerized tomography (CT) or computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan combines data from several X-raysito produce a detailed image of structures inside the body. CT scans produce 2D of a “slice” or section of the abdomen but the data can also be used to construct 3-dimensional images. However, CT scan unable to accurately represent the internal structure of soft tissues and soft-tissue lesions. Therefore, using the program in Visualization Tool Kit (VTK) is needed to construct a much more clearer 3D image. To reconstruct 3D images from 2D images of a “slice” or section of abdomen which will be resulting …

All research is done to find the most effective method of finding the fault location …

Detection Of Standing And Sitting Variations Based On In-Socket Piezoelectric Sensors For Transfemoral Amputees, Alnusairi Tawfik Yahya 2020 Universiti Malaya

Detection Of Standing And Sitting Variations Based On In-Socket Piezoelectric Sensors For Transfemoral Amputees, Alnusairi Tawfik Yahya

Student Works (2020-2029)

A transfemoral prosthesis is required to assist amputees to perform activities of daily living (ADL). The purely mechanical or passive prosthesis has some drawbacks such as consumption of high metabolic energy and limitations in mimicking normal dynamics and kinematics of gait pattern. In contrast, the active prosthesis offers better performance and consumes less metabolic energy. However, recent active prosthesis uses surface electromyography as its sensory system which requires massive preparation work, causes sores to the patient by its electrodes and requires a lot of computation to extract meaningful features. This thesis focuses on developing signal conditioning circuitry to classify six …

Design Of An Offline Handwriting Recognition System Tested On The Bangla And Korean Scripts, Nishatul Majid 2020 Boise State University

Design Of An Offline Handwriting Recognition System Tested On The Bangla And Korean Scripts, Nishatul Majid

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a flexible and robust offline handwriting recognition system which is tested on the Bangla and Korean scripts. Offline handwriting recognition is one of the most challenging and yet to be solved problems in machine learning. While a few popular scripts (like Latin) have received a lot of attention, many other widely used scripts (like Bangla) have seen very little progress. Features such as connectedness and vowels structured as diacritics make it a challenging script to recognize. A simple and robust design for offline recognition is presented which not only works reliably, but also can be used for …

Cup-Net: Compressed Ultrafast Photography Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Matthew Parker 2020 Dartmouth College

Cup-Net: Compressed Ultrafast Photography Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Matthew Parker

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is a cutting-edge imaging technique that uses a variation of the traditional streak camera to obtain video at 100 billion frames per second with a single exposure. In order to achieve this level of temporal detail, CUP leverages compressed sensing (CS). Compressed sensing theory states that a compressed representation of an image can be directly acquired using a non-adaptive measurement matrix so long as the encoding matrix follows certain properties such as restrictive isometry and incoherence. This compressed representation of the original scene can later be reconstructed back into the original form. CUP applies CS by …

Remedying Sound Source Separation Via Azimuth Discrimination And Re-Synthesis, Ruairí de Fréin 2020 Dublin Institute of Technology

Remedying Sound Source Separation Via Azimuth Discrimination And Re-Synthesis, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference papers

Commercially recorded music since the 1950s has been mixed down from many input sound sources to a two- channel reproduction of these sources. The effect of this approach is to assign sources to locations in a stereo field using a pan- position for each source. The Adress algorithm is a popular way of extracting individual music sound sources from a stereo mixture. A drawback of the Adress algorithm is that when time- frequency components in the stereo mixture are shared between two or more sources, calculating the inter-aural intensity scaling parameter for each source for that time-frequency component is challenging. …

New Robust Lpc-Based Method For Time-Resolved Morphology Of High-Noise Multiple Frequency Signals, Jin Xu, Ruairí de Fréin, Mark Davis 2020 Technological University Dublin

New Robust Lpc-Based Method For Time-Resolved Morphology Of High-Noise Multiple Frequency Signals, Jin Xu, Ruairí De Fréin, Mark Davis

Conference papers

This paper introduces a new time-resolved spectral analysis method based on the Linear Prediction Coding (LPC) method that is particularly suited to the study of the dynamics of low Signal-to-noise Ratio (SNR) signals comprising multiple frequency components. One of the challenges of the time-resolved spectral method is that they are limited by the Heisenberg-Gabor uncertainty principle. Consequently, there is a trade-off between the temporal and spectral resolution. Most of the previous studies are time-averaged methods. The proposed method is a parameterisation method which can directly extract the dominant formants. The method is based on a z-plane analysis of the poles …

Distance Estimation Using Ofdm Signals For Ultrasonic Positioning, Kyman Huang 2020 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Distance Estimation Using Ofdm Signals For Ultrasonic Positioning, Kyman Huang

Master's Theses

This paper describes a method of estimating distance via Time-of-Flight (TOF) measurement using ultrasonic Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals. Using OFDM signals allows the signals and their sub-carriers to remain orthogonal to each other while continuously transmitting. This estimation method is based on the change of phase of a traveling wave as it propagates through a medium (air for ultrasonic signals). By using signals containing multiple tones, the phase change between each frequency component is slightly different. This phase difference is dependent on the distance traveled and can thus be used to estimate distance. This paper studies the impact …

Heel Down And Toe-Off Time Measured With Ultrasonic Doppler System And Force Plate Sensor, Sabin Timsina

Honors Theses

Collie Box is a medical device that measures the gait parameters of the person walk- ing in front of it. This device uses the Ultrasonic Doppler system to extract the heel-contact and toe-off times of a person walking within the range of 2-10 meters. These times are used to determine the leg’s swing phase and double stance times. The ultrasonic transducer of 10mm diameter is driven at 40kHz. At the time of the heel-contact and toe-off, foot velocity is zero while the torso part of the human body is still in motion. The wide directivity of 10mm diameter ultrasonic transducer …

Methods Of High-Fidelity, High-Efficiency Class-D Audio Amplification, Kaleb Kassaw 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Methods Of High-Fidelity, High-Efficiency Class-D Audio Amplification, Kaleb Kassaw

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Gallium nitride-based field effect transistors (FETs) have opened a path for full-frequency-range class-D audio amplifiers with low distortion and noise, thanks to their ability to switch at much higher frequencies than that of the upper range of human hearing. Compared to traditional silicon-based transistors, GaN-based transistors offer superior efficiencies, particularly at power levels below their maxima. Paired with an analog-to-digital converter, digital signal processor, and pulse-code modulation to pulse-width modulation converter, these transistors are used to design and implement a solid-state amplifier capable of generating 100 watts of output through speakers with an impedance of 8 ohms using a 1-volt …

Robust Control Of Burst Suppression Amid Physical And Neurological Uncertainty, Stephen Ampleman, ShiNung Ching 2020 Washington University in St. Louis

Robust Control Of Burst Suppression Amid Physical And Neurological Uncertainty, Stephen Ampleman, Shinung Ching

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Burst suppression is a clinical term describing a phenomenon in which the electroencephalogram (EEG) of a sedated patient produces behavior that switches between higher frequency and amplitude bursting to lower frequency and lower amplitude suppression. This phenomenon can be observed during general anesthesia, hypothermia, or in an otherwise induced coma state. In a clinical setting, this phenomenon is typically induced by sedation from a drug such as propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol). The level of sedation can be quantified by something called the burst suppression ratio (BSR), which is defined as the amount of time that a patient’s EEG is in a suppressed …
