Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan

Masters Theses

"As the computer and electronics industry moves towards higher data rates, signal integrity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems always present challenges for designers for high-speed data communication systems. To characterize the entire link path between transmitters and receivers, accurate models for sources, passive link path (such as traces, vias, connectors, etc), and terminations should be built before simulations either in frequency or time domain. Due to the imperfection of model, data corrections are preferred before time-domain simulations to ensure stability. Moreover, data obtained from models should be compared with measurement results to judge the level of agreement for validations. This …

Time-Domain Thru-Reflect-Line (Trl) Calibration Error Assessment And Its Mitigation And Modeling Of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards (Pcb) With Complex Area Fills, Vysakh Sivarajan 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Time-Domain Thru-Reflect-Line (Trl) Calibration Error Assessment And Its Mitigation And Modeling Of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards (Pcb) With Complex Area Fills, Vysakh Sivarajan

Masters Theses

"Part 1 for this thesis is on the error assessment of a time-domain (t-TRL) calibration technique. Application of the "Thru-Reflect-Line" (TRL) calibration to time-domain measurements of S-parameters (t-TRL) can be used for the characterization of the printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, t-TRL calibrated results still have deviations from the reference frequency-domain vector network analyzer (VNA) calibrated results. There are two main sources of errors in the t-TRL calibration. They are random errors, such as an additive noise and jitter, and systematic errors associated with cables, connectors, and port mismatches. This work addresses these two types of errors by proper selection …

Control And Applications Of Double Input Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters, Venkata Anand Kishore Prabhala 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Control And Applications Of Double Input Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters, Venkata Anand Kishore Prabhala

Masters Theses

"Multi-input power electronic converters (MIPEC) are increasingly gaining interest in the fields of renewable energy systems and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). The main advantage of MIPECs is their ability to interface several energy sources and storage devices using a single power conversion stage. Therefore, they provide simpler control and smaller parts count. In this thesis, various aspects of the utilization of double-input (DI) converters in solar and HEV applications are explored. For instance, a DI buckboost topology is proposed for a photovoltaic (PV)/battery energy system. The converter is controlled in a way that maximum power is drawn from the PV …

Signal Analysis For Multiple Target Materials Through Wavelet Transforms, Rajat Pashine 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Signal Analysis For Multiple Target Materials Through Wavelet Transforms, Rajat Pashine

Masters Theses

"Signal identification based on different sensing systems like microwaves, infra-red, x-rays and terahertz waves is one of the classic problems in signal processing. Earlier methods had relied mainly on the amplitude spectrum obtained by these sensing techniques mainly due to non-availability of the phase information for the signals. Most of them are based on techniques like absorbance spectrum that requires a reference material's signal for the test material's identification. They are also sensitive to noise and highly dependent on the peak detection algorithms. Modern equipments with both amplitude and phase information provide an opportunity for time-domain signal based methods that …

Implementing Frequency Regulation Capability In A Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, Venkata Ajay Kumar Pappu 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Implementing Frequency Regulation Capability In A Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, Venkata Ajay Kumar Pappu

Masters Theses

"Photovoltaic power plants pose some challenges when integrated with the power grid. Today's PV plants focus on extracting the maximum power from the arrays. This makes the PV system unavailable for helping in regulating the grid frequency as compared to conventional synchronous generators. A new technique for tracking a pseudo-maximum power point for creating power reserve is presented. This will help provide fast response in injecting power to respond to rapid load changes in a manner analogous to the inertia of a rotating machine. This helps in contributing toward frequency regulation. This thesis examines the implementation of a two stage …

Solid State Fault Interruption Devices In Medium Voltage Distribution Systems With Distributed Generators, Mehul Kiran Madan 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Solid State Fault Interruption Devices In Medium Voltage Distribution Systems With Distributed Generators, Mehul Kiran Madan

Masters Theses

"Faults in electric power grids often result in long term interruption of electricity supply. The frequent and the sudden occurrences of faults undermine the reliability and continuity of electric networks. However, the new age digital economy demands a continuous supply of electricity of high power quality. This demand of continuous supply and the effort to increase the penetration of renewable power sources into the electric grid has led to a need of highly efficient and flexible systems with the ability to provide power of very high quality. The solid state fault interruption device (SSFID) is one amongst those devices. It …

Graded-Index Fiber Collimator Enhanced Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer, Yinan Zhang 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Graded-Index Fiber Collimator Enhanced Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer, Yinan Zhang

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, we studied a fringe visibility enhanced extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) by fusion splicing a quarter-pitch graded-index fiber (GIF) fiber to the lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF). The performance of the GIF collimator is theoretically analyzed using a ray matrix model and experimentally verified through beam divergence angle measurements. The fringe visibility of the GIF-collimated EFPI is measured as a function of the cavity length and compared with that of a regular SMF-EFPI. At the cavity length of 500µm, the fringe visibility of the GIF-EFPI is 0.8 while that of the SMF-EFPI is only 0.2. The visibility enhanced GIF-EFPI …

Reverberation Reduction In A Room For Multiple Positions, Raghavendra Ravikumar 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Reverberation Reduction In A Room For Multiple Positions, Raghavendra Ravikumar

Masters Theses

"Reverberation in a room occurs when the direct path sound from a sound source undergoes multiple reflections from the walls of the room before reaching the listener. An impulse response of the room can be measured called the room impulse response (RIR) which captures the effects of the room. This can be represented digitally on a computer. A filter is designed to cancel the effects of the room using the information in the room impulse response. This filter is called an equalization filter and is usually placed between the source signal and loudspeaker to perform the equalization. The RIR changes …

Methodology And Applications Of Electrostatic Discharge Current Reconstruction By Near-Field Scanning Technique, Wei Huang 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Methodology And Applications Of Electrostatic Discharge Current Reconstruction By Near-Field Scanning Technique, Wei Huang

Masters Theses

"Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause interference in or damage to circuits or systems in many ways e.g., by E- field or H- field coupling or via conduction paths. Although one can roughly estimate the voltage and current at the injection location during an ESD event, the real offending parameter is mostly the ESD current spreading throughout the system. Those currents can be simulated if great simplifications of the system are acceptable. However, even in moderately complex systems, the ability to simulate is limited by a lack of models and computational resources. Independent of the complexity, but obviously not free of …

Prediction Of Soft Error Response Of Integrated Circuits To Electrostatic Discharge Injection Via Simulation Field; Package Interaction For Electrostatic Discharge Soft Error Prediction; Full Wave Model For Simulating Noise Ken Electrostatic Discharge Generator, Argha Nandy 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Prediction Of Soft Error Response Of Integrated Circuits To Electrostatic Discharge Injection Via Simulation Field; Package Interaction For Electrostatic Discharge Soft Error Prediction; Full Wave Model For Simulating Noise Ken Electrostatic Discharge Generator, Argha Nandy

Masters Theses

"In the first section, a concept for analyzing soft error response in ICs to ESD via coupling through flex cable structures is presented. Its novelty lies in accounting for the transient electromagnetic fields radiated by the ESD generator that couples to the flex cable PCB thereby causing disturbance on the IC under test. This is accomplished in three stages; first by developing a full wave model of the DUT which includes modeling the PCB and flex cable geometry and validating it in frequency domain with regard to the transfer impedance. This followed by combining the ESD generator with the DUT …

Emi Suppression Of Dc-Dc Synchronous Buck Converters By Layout Optimizations And Emi Prediction Using Non-Linear And Spice Circuit Co-Simulation, Ankit Bhargava 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Emi Suppression Of Dc-Dc Synchronous Buck Converters By Layout Optimizations And Emi Prediction Using Non-Linear And Spice Circuit Co-Simulation, Ankit Bhargava

Masters Theses

"The oscillation on the phase voltage is due to the resonant structure formed by a parasitic loop (consisting of two FETs and the input decoupling capacitors) inductance and the output capacitance of the low side FET. Therefore, it is important to minimize this parasitic loop inductance. A simulation guideline is developed on full-wave modeling and simulation of buck converter layouts to estimate the parasitic loop inductances. Furthermore, this method is taken one step further to estimate the far-field radiation from the loop. These simulations were verified on six PCB variants of the buck converter and were compared with measurements in …

Distributed Spatiotemporal Detection For Chemical And Biological Threats Using Human Immune Mechanisms, Yatin Bodas 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Distributed Spatiotemporal Detection For Chemical And Biological Threats Using Human Immune Mechanisms, Yatin Bodas

Masters Theses

"Ubiquitous detection of chemical and biological (CB) threats in an urban environment using widely distributed, low-cost, broad-spectrum sensors carried by public or on vehicles is extremely desirable and pertinent for homeland security. These distributed sensors should interoperate autonomously and adaptively to meet stringent operational and detection performance requirements. This research explores the use of scalable detection methodology, inspired by the human immune mechanisms to meet these challenges. An adaptive spatiotemporal control mechanism is proposed to organize the detection behavior of spatially dispersed sensors using peer-to-peer communication so that a shorter response time, higher probability of detection and lower false alarm …

Charge Injection And Clock Feedthrough, Jonathan Yu 2010 San Jose State University

Charge Injection And Clock Feedthrough, Jonathan Yu

Master's Theses

Turning off a transistor introduces an error voltage in switched-capacitor circuits. Circuits such as analog-to-digital converters (ADC), digital-to-analog converters (DAC), and CMOS image sensor pixels are limited in performance due to the effects known as charge injection and clock feedthrough. Charge injection occurs in a switched-capacitor circuit when the transistor turns off and disperses channel charge into the source and drain. The source, which is the sampling capacitor, experiences an error in the sampled voltage due to the incoming channel charge. Simultaneously, the coupling due to gate-source overlap capacitance also contributes to the total error voltage, which is known as …

Spin-Strain Coupling In A 3-D Transition Metal Oxides, Ghous Bakhsh Narejo 2010 Michigan Technological University

Spin-Strain Coupling In A 3-D Transition Metal Oxides, Ghous Bakhsh Narejo

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

ab-initio Hartree Fock (HF), density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid potentials were employed to compute the optimized lattice parameters and elastic properties of perovskite 3-d transition metal oxides. The optimized lattice parameters and elastic properties are interdependent in these materials. An interaction is observed between the electronic charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in 3-d transition metal oxides. The coupling between the electronic charge, spin and lattice structures originates due to localization of d-atomic orbitals. The coupling between the electronic charge, spin and crystalline lattice also contributes in the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties in perovskites. The cubic and tetragonal …

Data Compression Concepts And Algorithms And Their Applications To Bioinformatics, Ozkan U. Nalbantoglu, David J. Russell, Khalid Sayood

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Data compression at its base is concerned with how information is organized in data. Understanding this organization can lead to efficient ways of representing the information and hence data compression. In this paper we review the ways in which ideas and approaches fundamental to the theory and practice of data compression have been used in the area of bioinformatics. We look at how basic theoretical ideas from data compression, such as the notions of entropy, mutual information, and complexity have been used for analyzing biological sequences in order to discover hidden patterns, infer phylogenetic relationships between organisms and study viral …

Variable-Wavelength Frequency-Domain Terahertz Ellipsometry, Tino Hofmann, C. M. Herzinger, A. Boosalis, T. E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam, Mathias Schubert

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report an experimental setup for wavelength-tunable frequency-domain ellipsometric measurements in the terahertz spectral range from 0.2 to 1.5 THz employing a desktop-based backward wave oscillator source. The instrument allows for variable angles of incidence between 30° and 90° and operates in a polarizer-sample-rotating analyzer scheme. The backward wave oscillator source has a tunable base frequency of 107–177 GHz and is augmented with a set of Schottky diode frequency multipliers in order to extend the spectral range to 1.5 THz. We use an odd-bounce image rotation system in combination with a wire grid polarizer to prepare the input polarization state. …

A Subthreshold Reconfigurable Architecture For Harsh Environments, Ameet O. Chavan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Energy harvesting and functional reconfigurability are necessary features in order to simultaneously achieve longer operating lifetimes and versatility in application for many next generation electronic systems. The presented research incorporates capabilities that not only enable applications to self-power from ambience but also permit change in functionality based on real-time application requirements. Currently, many applications are battery powered with custom hardware, which severely confines the application platform. Moreover, maintenance and upgrades are prohibitively expensive, particularly in the case of remote locations with limited accessibility. For harsh environments like Space or the battlefield, apart from features such as low power and econfigurability, …

Synthesis And Manufacture Of Photocrosslinkable Poly(Caprolactone)-Based 3d Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Nathan Jonathan Castro

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It is known that the body can efficiently repair hard tissue (bone) micro fractures by suturing the defect through the deposition of minerals resulting in an area that is stronger post-injury. Larger defects, however, generally cause more trouble since the body is incapable of repairing them. Bone defects can occur as a result of congenital abnormalities, trauma, or disease. Traditional methods for addressing these defects have involved the use of acellular cadaverous bone or autologous bone. Both contain innate problems associated with them; the former method can result in disease transmission, as well as very low integration with the host …

Multidisciplinary Collaborative Model For Complex, Angel Ernesto Delgado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Nowadays, most devices with advanced technology require the development of embedded systems with mechanical and electrical components as well as software including more than one discipline. These are devices that are usually complex in terms of composition and functionality and that design must follow a methodology in order to successfully design and launch a device of this nature. Hence, the assembly of a multidisciplinary engineering group is required to carry out such complex devices and develop a fully functional product. The group may also need an expert on the field that can provide guidance and knowledge where needed. This is …
