A Fpga/Dsp Based Ultrasound System For Tumor Detection, Ashish Ravindra Ratnakar
Theses
This work presents a method of detection of size and location of tumor using ultrasound transmission. The system utilizes Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) which means sending an ultrasound signal from a transmitter and receiving it at multiple receivers. This received signal is analyzed for echogenic as well as echolucent tumors to differentiate between the two along with non-tumorous sample and also for delay, signal distortion to determine the size/location of the tumor.
This analysis is further implemented using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Digital Signal Processor (DSP) technologies. The proposed detection system utilizes Low Transient Pulse (LTP) technique. In this …

Scatterometer Image Reconstruction Tuning And Aperture Function Estimation For Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer On The Earth Observing System, Brian Adam Gunn
Theses and Dissertations
AMSR-E is a space-borne radiometer which measures Earth microwave emissions or brightness temperatures (Tb) over a wide swath. AMSR-E data and images are useful in mapping valuable Earth-surface and atmospheric phenomena. A modified version of the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction (SIR) algorithm creates Tb images from the collected data. SIR is an iterative algorithm with tuning parameters to optimize the reconstruction for the instrument and channel. It requires an approximate aperture function for each channel to be effective. This thesis presents a simulator-based optimization of SIR iteration and aperture function threshold parameters for each AMSR-E channel. A comparison of actual Tb …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Gold nanocubes were synthesized by a two-step seed-mediated growth method. The Aucore-Pdshell and Aucore-Pdshell-Ptcluster nanocubes with controllable shell thickness of Pd and cluster coverage of Pt were synthesized by simply changing the amount ratio of H2PdCl4 or H2PtCl6. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) , transmission electron microscopc (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). CV was then used to make a systematic study on the dependence of the electrocatalytic properties on the shell thickness of Aucore-Pdshell and Pt coverage of Aucore-Pd …

Failure Reaction Mechanism Of Internal Short-Circuit For Lithium-Ion Batteries, He Li, Shen-Jun Yu, Zhi-Kui Chen, Guang-Chuan Liang
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this work, the battery impact testing machine has been used to study the failure progress of internal short-circuit (ISC) for lithium ion batteries. The reaction mechanisms between cathode/anode and electrolyte in the battery at different temperatures were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental results show that the ISC failure of the battery was mainly due to the reaction between cathode Li0.5CoO2 and electrolyte. The decomposition and oxygen evolution reactions of cathode occurred when the temperature reached a certain value. At the same time a fierce oxidation …

Micro-crystallite carbon (CC) was synthesized by KOH activation of carbonized petroleum coke precursors. The porous properties structure and crystallite structure were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The capacitive behavior of CC was investigated in the electrolyte of Et4NBF4/PC, Et4NBF4/AN, Bu4NBF4/PC and Bu4NBF4/AN, respectively. Results showed that the lower potential of electric field activation (EFA) was obtained in the solvent of AN than in PC, which was ascribed to the fact that smaller solvated ions dimension in AN facilitating the intercalation …

Journal of Electrochemistry
The structure and performance of MEA were optimized by tailoring the catalyst layer, cathodic microporous layer (MPL) ,anodic MPL and membrane, with the considerations of unique characteristics of airbreathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) such as methanol crossover and cathode flooding. It was found that high catalyst loading could suppress the methanol crossover effectively, but too high catalyst loading can lead to high mass transport resistance. Hydrophobic anodic MPL with 30% (by mass) PTFE could facilitate the CO2 bubble detachment, which decreased the methanol concentration gradient and suppressed the methanol crossover accordingly. When Nafion 115 was used as membrane, methanol crossover was severe, while Nafion …

Throughput And Delay Analysis On Uncoded And Coded Wireless Broadcast With Hard Deadline Constraints, Xiaohang Li, Chih-Chun Wang, Xiaojun Lin
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Multimedia streaming applications have stringent QoS requirements. Typically each packet is associated with a packet delivery deadline. This work models and considers realtime streaming broadcast over the downlink of a single cell. The broadcast capacity of the system subject to deadline constraints are studied for both uncoded and coded wireless broadcast schemes. For the uncoded scenario, an optimal transmission policy is devised based on finite-horizon dynamic programming, and a closed-form expression of the optimal throughput is developed in the asymptotic regime, as the size of the file approaches infinity. For the coded scenario, the optimal capacity in the asymptotic regime …

Design Of A Low-Cost, Underwater Acoustic Modem For Short-Range Sensor Networks, Bridget Benson, Y. Li., R. Kastner, B. Faunce, K. Domond, D. Kimball, C. Schurgers
Electrical Engineering
A fundamental impediment to the use of dense underwater sensor networks is an inexpensive acoustic modem. Commercial underwater modems that do exist were designed for sparse, long range, applications rather than for small, dense, sensor nets. Thus, we are building an underwater acoustic modem starting with the most critical component from a cost perspective - the transducer. The design substitutes a commercial transducer with a homemade transducer using cheap piezoceramic material and builds the rest of the modem's components around the properties of the transducer to extract as much performance as possible. This paper presents the design considerations, implementation details, …

Computer Forensics For Graduate Accountants: A Motivational Curriculum Design Approach, Grover S. Kearns
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Computer forensics involves the investigation of digital sources to acquire evidence that can be used in a court of law. It can also be used to identify and respond to threats to hosts and systems. Accountants use computer forensics to investigate computer crime or misuse, theft of trade secrets, theft of or destruction of intellectual property, and fraud. Education of accountants to use forensic tools is a goal of the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants). Accounting students, however, may not view information technology as vital to their career paths and need motivation to acquire forensic knowledge and skills. …
