Mean-Shift Object Tracking Algorithm With Systematic Sampling Technique, Yoanes Bandung, Aris Ardiansyah

Makara Journal of Technology

Mean shift is a fast object tracking algorithm that only considers pixels in an object area, hence its relatively small computational load. This algorithm is suitable for use in real-time conditions in terms of execution time. The use of histograms causes this algorithm to be relatively resistant to rotation and changes in object size. However, its resistance to lighting changes is not optimal. This study aims to improve the performance of the algorithm under lighting changes and reduce its processing time. The proposed technique involves the use of sampling techniques to reduce the number of iterations, optimization of candidate search …

Three-Dimensional (3d) Memory I/O Interface Design Using Quad-Band Interconnect (Qbi) And Eight-Level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (8-Pam), Xiaoyan Wang

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The demand for high bandwidth, low latency, reconfigurable, and small form factor memory I/O interface design has significantly increased with the development of data-intensive applications, such as artificial neural networks and high-performance computing. However, the current memory I/O interface technologies have critical limitations, such as limited bandwidth, limited pin count, long latency, non-reconfigurable data access, and large form factor. Therefore, a novel memory I/O interface design is needed to overcome these limitations.

This dissertation presents two novel memory I/O interface designs using 3D integration, QBI, and 8-PAM technologies to improve bandwidth, latency, reconfigurability, and form factor for future mobile devices. …

Design Of An Ultra-Wideband Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave Short Range Radar System For Extending Independent Living, Toai-Chi Nguyen

Master's Theses

Falls in the disabled and elderly people have been a cause of concern as they can be immobilized by the fall and have no way to contact others and seek assistance. The proposed frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) short range radar (SRR) system, which uses ultra-wideband (UWB) signals can provide immediate assistance by monitoring and detecting fall events. The unique characteristics of this system allow for a frequency-based modulation system to carry out triangulation and sense the location of the fall through the usage of a continuous chirp signal that linearly sweeps frequency. This project focuses on the development, design …

Student Works (2020-2029)

Compact optical amplifier, nonlinear fiber laser and pulse generation have been successfully demonstrated using hafnium-bismuth-erbium co-doped fiber (HB-EDF) as the gain medium. The HB-EDF was recently fabricated using a modified chemical vapour deposition (MCVD) process in conjunction with the solution doping (SD) technique. The fiber has an Erbium ions concentration of 12500 wt. ppm, which was realized due to the co-doping with Hafnium and Aluminum ions. Firstly, a flat gain amplifier operating was realized using 50 cm long HB-EDF at -10 dBm input signal. The amplifier’s gain varies from 9.3 to 9.8 dB with a noise figure less than 4.1 …

Led-Based Optical Sensing Platforms For Multi-Analyte Detection, YoungHo Shin 2021 Louisiana State University

Led-Based Optical Sensing Platforms For Multi-Analyte Detection, Youngho Shin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Real-time monitoring of phytoplankton groups provides important information about aquatic ecological states, nutrient abundance, and water pollution. A rapid and accurate method for monitoring phytoplankton in water is commonly performed by detecting fluorescence emission from the plankton; however, commercially available portable fluorescence sensors are still expensive, bulky, and limited in functions, such as lacking the capability of selectively detecting multiple phytoplankton groups. In this regard, a low-cost and portable fluorometer platform for phytoplankton detection was developed in order to address the issues that current portable fluorometers have.

This dissertation has four main goals: (1) perform a study on fluorescence measurement …

Applied Evanescent Wave On Zinc Oxide Nanorods Coated Glass Surface For Sensing Applications, Mohd Hafiz Jali

Student Works (2020-2029)

A simple and workable optical fiber sensor was successfully proposed and demonstrated by integrating the microfiber and the glass surface coated with Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods. It exploited the distinctive features of the large evanescent wave of the microfiber and surface absorption capability of the ZnO nanomaterials coated glass surface to couple with the surrounding analyte. An experimental validation was performed to optimize and verify the sensing performance of the proposed structure. ZnO nanorod growth time of 12-hours and microfiber waist diameter of 6 µm provide optimum sensing results towards the changes of humidity concentration level. The diameter of silica …

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurfaces, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù 2021 CUNY Advanced Science Research Cente

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurfaces, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

Fano resonances are conventionally understood as sharp spectral features with selectivity in the momentum-frequency domain, implying that they can be excited only by plane waves with specific frequencies and incident angles. We demonstrate that Fano resonances can be made generally selective in the space-frequency domain. They can be tailored to resonate only when excited by a frequency, polarization, and wavefront of choice. This generalization reveals that Fano systems are characterized by eigenwaves that scatter to their time-reversed image upon reflection. Although in conventional Fano systems this trivially occurs for normally incident plane waves, we show that, in general, the selected …

Channel Estimation In Multi-User Massive Mimo Systems By Expectation Propagation Based Algorithms, Mohammed Rashid 2021 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Channel Estimation In Multi-User Massive Mimo Systems By Expectation Propagation Based Algorithms, Mohammed Rashid

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology uses large antenna arrays with tens or hundreds of antennas at the base station (BS) to achieve high spectral efficiency, high diversity, and high capacity. These benefits, however, rely on obtaining accurate channel state information (CSI) at the receiver for both uplink and downlink channels. Traditionally, pilot sequences are transmitted and used at the receiver to estimate the CSI. Since the length of the pilot sequences scale with the number of transmit antennas, for massive MIMO systems downlink channel estimation requires long pilot sequences resulting in reduced spectral efficiency and the so-called pilot …

High Quality Single-Crystalline Aluminum Nitride Grown Using Pulsed Atomic-Layer Epitaxy Technique By Mocvd On Sapphire Substrate, Mohd Nazri Abd Rahman 2021 Universiti Malaya

High Quality Single-Crystalline Aluminum Nitride Grown Using Pulsed Atomic-Layer Epitaxy Technique By Mocvd On Sapphire Substrate, Mohd Nazri Abd Rahman

Student Works (2020-2029)

The unique structural properties and engineering characteristics of nitride-based materials have given them a special position in semiconductor applications. Alloys with a tuned energy bandgap from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths are possible to be deposited in maintaining the wurtzite crystal structure. However, the aluminum nitride / aluminum gallium nitride (AlN/AlGaN) based hetero-structures for deep-ultraviolet (DUV) emitters as well as AlN-based actuators and piezoelectric sensors are highly inefficient owing to the excessive mismatch in thermal and lattice features between these epilayers with flat c-plane sapphire substrates, resulting in crack formation and high dislocation densities. This thesis mainly focuses on the development …

Investigation On The Performance Of Tetraglyme Based Solid Copolymer Electrolytes For Solid State Electrical Double Layer Capacitors (Edlcs), Sinasamy Sharmilah

Student Works (2020-2029)

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have been the focus of intensive research due to their large demand in applications such as electrochemical capacitors, fuel cells, solar cells and batteries. They have shown many advantages such as wider electrochemical potential window, good thermal stability, low volatility and easy handling. Due to these advantages, SPEs have great potential in energy storage applications. Usually, SPEs suffer from poor conductivity, which hinders its performance for energy storage applications. In order to enhance the conductivity of the SPEs, the host polymer incorporated with salt to provide ions for conductivity, ionic liquid to enhance the conductivity and …

Color-Compressive Bilateral Filter And Nonlocal Means For High-Dimensional Images, Christina Karam, Kenjiro Sugimoto, Keigo Hirakawa 2021 University of Dayton

Color-Compressive Bilateral Filter And Nonlocal Means For High-Dimensional Images, Christina Karam, Kenjiro Sugimoto, Keigo Hirakawa

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We propose accelerated implementations of bilateral filter (BF) and nonlocal means (NLM) called color-compressive bilateral filter (CCBF) and color-compressive nonlocal means (CCNLM). CCBF and CCNLM are random filters, whose Monte-Carlo averaged output images are identical to the output images of conventional BF and NLM, respectively. However, CCBF and CCNLM are considerably faster because the spatial processing of multiple color channels are combined into a single random filtering process. This implies that the complexity of CCBF and CCNLM is less sensitive to color dimension (e.g., hyperspectral images) relatively to other BF and NLM methods. We experimentally verified that the execution time …

Deep Learning For Anisoplanatic Optical Turbulence Mitigation In Long-Range Imaging, Matthew A. Hoffmire, Russell C. Hardie, Michael A. Rucci, Richard Van Hook, Barry K. Karch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a deep learning approach for restoring images degraded by atmospheric optical turbulence. We consider the case of terrestrial imaging over long ranges with a wide field-of-view. This produces an anisoplanatic imaging scenario where turbulence warping and blurring vary spatially across the image. The proposed turbulence mitigation (TM) method assumes that a sequence of short-exposure images is acquired. A block matching (BM) registration algorithm is applied to the observed frames for dewarping, and the resulting images are averaged. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is then employed to perform spatially adaptive restoration. We refer to the proposed TM algorithm as …

Controller Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Multiple Input Single Output Dc-Dc Converter, Astha Adhikari

Master's Theses

This thesis entails the stability analysis of the Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) DC-DC converter developed for the DC House Project at Cal Poly. A frequency domain control system model of the MISO converter was designed and constructed using MATLAB Simulink. Transfer functions were derived and modeled for each stage of the converter to best fit the converter circuit system used in the original MISO circuit. Stability metrics such as overshoot, undershoot, rise time, phase margin and gain margin were measured to evaluate and analyze the stability of the converter. These metrics were measured with the original model including the …

Early Wildfire Detection With Line Sensors, Virginia Yan 2021 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Early Wildfire Detection With Line Sensors, Virginia Yan

Master's Theses

Over the last few years, wildfires have become more devastating to communities as the fires are inevitably destructive to many homes, businesses, and ecosystems. Frequent wildfires also pose a significant threat to power grids and nearby residents as they can damage transmission lines and other electrical equipment, which in turn can cause major power shutdowns. Especially in western U.S., severe drought conditions and weather variability cause residents to become more vulnerable to wildfire disasters as their safety is threatened. We are incompetent to control the wildfires effectively despite existing advanced technologies. Hence, an algorithm based on energy conservation and heat …

Commuting Compositions For Quantum Circuit Reduction, Brenna R. Cole 2021 Air Force Institute of Technology

Commuting Compositions For Quantum Circuit Reduction, Brenna R. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum circuit simplification improves program execution on quantum hardware by reducing error from prolonged environmental interaction and noisy gate operations. One simplification technique is template matching, which repeatedly conducts local optimization by replacing small sequences of gates within a circuit by optimized versions. Underlying this method is the problem of identifying sequences matching templates. This is challenging because some, but not all, gates can commute within a circuit. This means there may not be a subcircuit that matches a template in the original circuit specification, but a match may exist in an equivalent rearrangement of gates. In such cases, certain …
