This thesis presents a novel method for controlling multi-actuator soft robots using pneumatic latched demultiplexer circuits implemented with monolithic membrane valves. The pneumatic circuits are designed to address the problems of heavy dependence on hard electrical components and lack of feasible multi-actuator soft robotic systems that limit the potential applications of soft robotics. The proposed pneumatic demultiplexers reduce the number of solenoid valves and electrical components required to drive soft robotic systems, making soft robot control mechanisms more compliant, scalable, and versatile. It also involves understanding the current need for robotic applications in hospital settings. To achieve the above, a thorough literature review of the current state of robotics in a hospital setting was conducted. As society progresses into an era where both parents work, whether it is online or in person, children in the home may be put in dangerous situations if they are not given the attention they need. The BotSitter is an automated system that follows the child around and makes an audio alarm to alert both the child and the nearby guardian. Using RSSI trilateration, predetermined danger areas, and embedded controls, the BotSitter will be able to follow the child. The device can manage to keep track of the child for the guardian while being almost completely automated outside of setup.

The growing popularity and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has led to serious security concerns. The integration of a security operations center (SOC) becomes increasingly important in this situation to ensure the security of IoT devices. In this article, we will present a summary of IoT device security issues, their vulnerabilities, a review of current challenges to keep these devices secure, and discuss the role that SOC can bring in protecting IoT devices while considering the challenges encountered and the directions to consider when implementing a reliable SOC for IoT monitoring.

Whiteboards have become a staple in many classrooms, especially in the context of STEM courses. However, when it comes to teaching complex topics, it can be difficult or impractical to provide accurate drawings and visualizations by hand, and in extreme cases may lead to misinterpretation of a particular topic. To fix this issue, the Whiteboard Drawing Device allows users to draw preset shapes to a whiteboard automatically, both quickly and accurately. The goal of the project is to build a wireless kick pedal that allows accessibility to drummers that have leg or foot disabilities and add versatility to multi-instrumentalists looking to add percussion while playing another instrument. The proposed pedal is designed in two main parts, a wearable band that tracks the player’s movement, and a hammer mechanism that receives actuation commands from the wearable band to move the hammer and deliver a drumbeat. This work proposes a small pattern and polarization diversity multisector annular antenna with electrical size and profile of ka = 1.2 and 0.018λ, respectively. The antenna is planar and comprises annular sectors that are fed using different ports to enable digital beamforming techniques, with efficiency and gain of up to 78% and 4.62 dBi, respectively. The cavity model analysis is used to describe the design concept and the antenna diversity. The proposed method can produce different polarization states (e.g., linearly and circularly polarized patterns) and pattern diversity characteristics covering the elevation plane. Intense 3.5 μm mid-infrared emission has been achieved in Er3+-doped ZBYA glasses, which is ascribed to the Er3+: 4F9/2→4I9/2 transition. Based on the absorption spectrum of Er3+ ions, a 638 nm laser was utilized to directly pump the upper level (Er3+: 4F9/2) to achieve 3.5 μm emission with enhanced quantum efficiency. Spectroscopic parameters were predicted by Judd-Ofelt theory. The maximum emission cross-section of the Er3+-doped ZBYA glass was estimated to be 5.5×10-22 cm2 at 3496 nm. Additionally, the fluorescence spectra and energy level lifetimes of ZBYA glass samples with different Er3+ ions doping concentrations were also measured. The theoretical and …

Orbion Space Technology is a developer and manufacturer of electric propulsion systems for military and commercial spacecraft. Orbion’s products include a Power Processing Unit (PPU) which is utilized for power and control of the satellite propulsion system. These PPUs are complex electro-mechanical assemblies that include multiple Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBA) and are built to IPC standards. To ensure smooth fabrication and to reduce the risk of complications from in-process rework of PCBAs, comprehensive electrical functional testing at the board-level is required before higher- level assembly. The main objective of this dissertation is to develop a generalized simulation and modeling framework for extracting dynamics of power electronic converters (PECs) with grid support functions (GSFs) and validate model accuracy through experimental comparison with physical measurements. The dynamic models obtained from this modeling framework aim to facilitate accurate dynamic analysis of a highly integrated power system comprising inverter-based resources (IBRs), specifically for stability assessment. The complexity of modern power systems has led to more blackouts in the past 15 years. These blackouts cause significant disruptions and economic impacts. To address this, the IEEE PES taskforce recommended Intentional Controlled Islanding (ICI) via Special Protection Schemes (SPSs). ICI, or controlled system separation, is an adaptive control strategy to prevent widespread blackouts when conventional protection measures fail. It involves quickly identifying and disconnecting specific grid branches to form stable, manageable islands. These islands can be controlled more efficiently, reducing the risk of a total blackout. This project focuses on enhancing operational efficiency by integrating a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a solar power generation system. The primary goal is to design and optimize the scheduling and sizing of the BESS using Rule-Based Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization. The analysis includes assessing electricity cost reduction rates, payback periods, and identifying the battery capacity that maximizes cost savings while maintaining an acceptable payback period.
