Increasing development in electronic technologies has improved functionality and reduced physical constraints, while managing to impart higher power and performance in smaller and compact devices. As a result of this size reduction, there is also a reduction in the surface area required for heat dissipation. Due to this the thermal management problem has been further intensified. The end result is that the power density continues to rise even with improved thermal management strategies incorporated into the system. Thermal management hence plays an important aspect especially when the design of compact electronic devices is concerned. For most electronic applications thermal loads …

Concentration probes are employed in supersonic flow mixing experiments for binary gas mixture composition measurements. These measurements are fundamental for the advancement of the scramjet technology. While non-intrusive laser-based methods (such as planar laser-induced fluorescence and filtered Rayleigh scattering) have been developed greatly over the past few decades, intrusive methods (such as concentration probes) still play an essential role in the measurement of mixture composition due to the fact that, with correct application, they do not require further assumptions on the aerothermodynamic states of the investigated mixture, which are often difficult to corroborate. Conversely, such assumptions are essential to the …

Introduction of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) into the NAS (National Air Space) requires the detect-and-avoid capability. That is, an aircraft should be able to detect other aircraft flying in the same airspace volume and make evasive maneuvers if there is potential conflict. One potential methods currently investigated for detection of an intruder aircraft is to process digital images taken by onboard cameras. When and if intruder aircraft detection is successful through image processing, avoidance algorithms can greatly benefit from the relative position information. This thesis research investigates methods to compute the position of an intruder aircraft relative to an observer …

Successive droplet impingement finds extensive applications in additive manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, Liquid Metal Jetting and Net Form Manufacturing. Deposition, deformation and solidification of droplets are the constitutive stages in the process which determine the final outcome. Detailed knowledge about the flow behaviour, phase transformation and free surface deformation is required to have a complete understanding and optimization of the process parameters. Experimental research in this field is only limited to imaging techniques and post solidification analysis which only provide superficial information while overlooking most of the governing phenomenon. Knowledge of the physics governing the fluid and thermal …

The recent trend in electronic industry shows that there is large power dissipation from the electronic devices and at the same time their sizes are getting smaller. This large power dissipation takes place in the form of releasing heat energy. It is observed that heat dissipation from the electronic devices is high and source size is small. The high device temperatures result in decreased reliability and increased failure rates. This difficulty can be addressed by controlling the temperatures at the source of heat generation. In chip scale package chip is the major source of heat generation. Thus our priority is …

In IT industries, to keep server rooms and data centers cool is a constant challenge for hardware developers and the cooling solution providers. Air cooling is the most widely used approach for thermal management of servers in data centers from many years. However, the scenario is changing gradually as the computational ability of data center is increasing exponentially. Because of increasing computational ability, the heat generated by the servers is increased in such amount that air cooling is not as efficient as it was before. Hence, alternative cooling system is required. In 1970’s the idea of liquid cooling was introduced. …

We present a computational study of flapping-wing aerodynamics of a calliope hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) during fast forward flight. Three-dimensional wing kinematics were incorporated into the model by extracting time-dependent wing position from high-speed videos of the bird flying in a wind tunnel at 8.3 m s−1. The advance ratio, i.e. the ratio between flight speed and average wingtip speed, is around one. An immersed-boundary method was used to simulate flow around the wings and bird body. The result shows that both downstroke and upstroke in a wingbeat cycle produce significant thrust for the bird to overcome …

In this work, we develop a new boom to separate oil and water. In a commonly used boom, a membrane that has no pores is normally used to block oil spread. Since this membrane also blocks water flow, high pressure is easy to build on such a membrane to break or damage it. To solve this problem, in the new boom, the membrane is replaced with a hydrogel-coated mesh. The hydrogel-coated mesh has dual properties of superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity. Accordingly, water can still go through the mesh, while oil cannot. Subsequently, liquid pressure on the mesh is reduced. In this …
