Net Zero: The True Outcome Of Zero Tolerance Policies In Schools, Kaylee Gueltzow 2020 Augsburg College

Net Zero: The True Outcome Of Zero Tolerance Policies In Schools, Kaylee Gueltzow

Augsburg Honors Review

Since the Columbine massacre in the wake of the "unsafe schools" environmental plague, congress and school administrators have searched for a solution. As a result of this search, zero tolerance policies have become a societal nonn in the American education system. Although the intentions of these policies seem clear and unarguable, the negative effects of these policies have been overlooked. Zero tolerance policies have created an environment of hasty decisions and dramatic punishments which have unfairly and disproportionately attacked students with learning disabilities and students of color. The result of large numbers of students of color being pushed out of …

Building A Culture Of Innovation: Breaking Down Silos, Dina Pacis, Patricia Traynor-Nilsen, Joesph Marron 2020 National University

Building A Culture Of Innovation: Breaking Down Silos, Dina Pacis, Patricia Traynor-Nilsen, Joesph Marron

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Institutes of Higher Education (IHE) are divided into colleges and within colleges are departments. Most departments work with their faculty members and have little interaction with others outside their specialty area. This paper outlines the process taken in year one of a two-year journey that one large IHE department which consisted of five stand-alone programs: Educational Administration, School Psychology, School Counseling, Higher Education Administration, and Applied Behavior Analysis took to work toward building a culture of innovation, collaboration, mission, visioning, and scholarship which brought all faculty members together. The department had been working in silos, with no common mission or …

Pathways To Leadership: A Qualitative Study Of Women In Higher Education, Kymia Love Jackson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Women earn degrees at a higher rate than men, yet they are underrepresented in leadership positions in general and more specifically, in executive leadership positions in the areas of finance, operations, and administration (FOA) in higher education. This qualitative study explored the journeys of women in executive leadership positions in finance, operations, and administration at four-year, public colleges or universities. The research question that guided this study was: How do women describe their experiences of securing, transitioning into, and advancing within executive leadership positions in FOA in higher education? Document and content analysis, demographic questionnaire, observations, interviews, and reflection were …

An Analysis Of Campus Services For International Students At Institutions In The Midwest, Sylvia Miriyam Findlay 2020 Illinois State University

An Analysis Of Campus Services For International Students At Institutions In The Midwest, Sylvia Miriyam Findlay

Theses and Dissertations

Higher education campuses are becoming ethnoculturally diverse with the influx of international students from various parts of the world and must modify their international student recruitment and enrollment strategies in response to this trend. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of student affairs personnel to campus services for international students by comparing what should be provided to what is being offered. The study also attempts to identify the gap in their perceptions. Services identified in the literature were examined using the Briggs and Ammigan (2017) collaborative programming and outreach model, which combined concepts of student engagement …

School-Parent Communication: Ls There An Association Between Grade Levels And Parental Receipt Of Information?, Billy K. Maxey

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Abstract

The purpose of this quantitative study was to discover if an association exists between grade-level and the type of avenues through which parents wish to receive information from their child’s school. Participants were a sample of one hundred and fifty parents of seventh and eighth grade students at an urban public junior high school in Northwest Arkansas. Participants completed an eleven question causal-comparative survey that asked parents to identify the various ways in which they prefer to receive information from the school including looking the information up on their own or having the information sent to them. In addition, …

Testing, Teacher Turnover And The Distribution Of Teachers Across Grades And Schools, Dillon Fuchsman, Tim R. Sass, Gema Zamarro

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Teacher turnover has adverse consequences for student achievement and imposes large financial costs for schools. Some have argued that high-stakes testing may lower teachers’ satisfaction with their jobs and could be a major contributor to teacher attrition. In this paper, we exploit changes in the tested grades and subjects in Georgia to study the effects of eliminating high-stakes testing on teacher turnover and the distribution of teachers across grades and schools. To measure the effect of testing pressures on teacher mobility choices we use a "difference-in-differences" approach, comparing changes in mobility over time in grades/subjects that discontinue testing vis-à-vis grades/subjects …
