Nothing To Be Done: The Active Function Of Samuel Beckett's Text, Deleah Vaye Emery Waters Silva 2012 Brigham Young University - Provo

Nothing To Be Done: The Active Function Of Samuel Beckett's Text, Deleah Vaye Emery Waters Silva

Theses and Dissertations

Fintan O'Toole states: "Plays survive not by being carefully preserved, not by being exhibited from time to time in theatrical museums, but by being tried and tested, taken apart and reassembled" (Game Without End). One of the great misconceptions and critiques of Samuel Beckett is of his presumed unrelenting control over his works. Artists, hoping to creatively collaborate with Beckett as they move his texts to performance, feel limited by his strict enforcement of that which he has written in his texts. Traditional relationships and functions allow directors to interpret an author's text. Not so with Beckett. Beckett demands …

Media Meets Science: The Experience Of A Media Teacher And Science Teacher As They Implement Media Literacy In A Science Classroom, Matthew Jay Brown

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative action research study looked at my collaboration with a science teacher as we combined a Television Production class with an Advanced Placement Environmental Science class. This cross-curricular case study explored the implementation of the principles of media literacy, defined by the National Association for Media Literacy Education, into the science classroom where media literacy has traditionally been a non-factor. The impact of media and technology on everyone's daily lives is making it necessary for us to become media literate. The use of media literacy tools and strategies in a combined media production class and an AP science class …

The Persistence Of Vengeance From Early Modern England To Postmodern New York, Dominic M. Sevieri 2012 The University of New Orleans

The Persistence Of Vengeance From Early Modern England To Postmodern New York, Dominic M. Sevieri

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As a passing glance at the popular texts of any given period reveals, the subject of vengeance is nearly inescapable; on billboards, websites, and year end lists, revenge represents a curious constant even amid disparate media. This study explores the cultural commonalities that align revenge texts of the English Renaissance and exploitation films of late 20th century America. As in-depth inquiry reveals, numerous ideas and narrative tropes popularized during the Early Modern period are pushed to their logical extremes in these films. The central factor that aligns London during the Renaissance and New York at the cusp of the 1990s …

Latvian Folk Dance: Sustaining Cultural Heritage In The Context Of Christianity And Communism, Emilija Karina Grinvalds 2012 Butler University

Latvian Folk Dance: Sustaining Cultural Heritage In The Context Of Christianity And Communism, Emilija Karina Grinvalds

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In times of chaos and violence, brutality and oppression, one would not think of the arts as a guiding light for maintaining cultural identity and establishing peace and independence. However, the small country of Latvia serves as a prime example of how the arts, specifically folk dance, helped to maintain Latvian culture through centuries of oppression and war. As Swedish and German missionaries sought to spread Christianity throughout the pagan tribes in the 11th century, dance helped to sustain the cultural and religious beliefs of the ancient Latvians. Folk dance created a sense of unity within their communities, and the …

So Please You: A Creative Project On Playing “Oswald” In King Lear, Darren Hayes 2012 University of Southern Mississippi

So Please You: A Creative Project On Playing “Oswald” In King Lear, Darren Hayes

Honors Theses

This is a creative project displaying my process and journey through rehearsals—and eventually performances—as “Oswald” in the University of Southern Mississippi’s Theatre and Dance Department’s production of William Shakespeare’s King Lear. All of my research and preparation culminated in a final performance of the show which took place October 14th through the 23rd of 2011. This was the most important part of my creative project, as it showcased all of my hard work throughout the process. All of the documentation that follows was used to support my performance, as is the case in any particular role. If I did …

Playing Echo In Eleemosynary: A Creative Thesis Project, Hayley Barnes 2012 University of Southern Mississippi

Playing Echo In Eleemosynary: A Creative Thesis Project, Hayley Barnes

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I will explain on paper my creative process of researching, rehearsing, and performing the role of Echo in Eleemosynary. Eleemosynary is a one-act play by playwright Lee Blessing about three women and how their lives intersect and affect each other. I played Echo, the youngest of the three; her mother is Artie and hergrandmother is Dorothea. The play takes place in 1985 and is non-linear in structure. It alternates between scenes in the present in which the characters are speaking directly to the audience, and scenes in various points of the past. Echo is raised almost entirely …

A Scenographic Transposition From The Stage To The Screen: An Excavation Of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jordan Randall 2012 University of Southern Mississippi

A Scenographic Transposition From The Stage To The Screen: An Excavation Of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jordan Randall

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the distinction between the scenic design of A Streetcar Named Desire’s original Broadway production and 1951 film. Using Streetcar as a case study, I evaluated the differences in the choices made in the scenography of the two mediums as a way to evaluate whether there are inherent differences between theatre and film. I examined the scripts of both mediums and analyzed how the story was transposed and how that transposition affected the choices made by the director and designer in the making of the film.

Commedia By Zabbo, Laura Zabbo 2012 University of Connecticut - Storrs

Commedia By Zabbo, Laura Zabbo

Honors Scholar Theses

After studying Commedia Dell'arte with world renowned maestro, Antonio Fava, in Reggio Emilia, Italy, I returned to the States and continued to develop my craft by teaching others and creating a self-produced Commedia Dell'arte show. Using Fava's training from the month-long course in Italy, I used the foundation of the traditional Commedia Dell'arte characters, their physicality, and the stock story-lines to build my own one-woman comical performance that was completely relevant to the setting. The show was completely self-written and directed, and was performed using sculpted Commedia Dell'arte masks from Bart Roccoberton and his puppetry students.

Commedia by Zabbo opened …

Shanghai Quartet, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity

Ever since Franz Josef Haydn developed the modern version of a string quartet in the mid-18th century, the most daring and innovative practitioners of the art form has to be Béla Bartók. In this special double program, the Shanghai Quartet flexes its musical muscles by performing the complete Bartók quartet cycle. Written over a 30-year span, Bartók’s six quartets stand as a sonic biography of one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic and essential composers.

Stepping Into The World Of The Vocal Coach: Assessing Vocal Coaching Needs, Renina Hoblitz 2012 Virginia Commonwealth University

Stepping Into The World Of The Vocal Coach: Assessing Vocal Coaching Needs, Renina Hoblitz

Theses and Dissertations

There are many excellent books detailing methods to help actors develop their voices, but not much has been published about vocal coaching itself, apart from the definitive guide to Vocal Coaching Nan-Withers Wilson’s book Vocal Direction for the Theatre, and the highly informative publication How to Use a Vocal Coach: A Practical Guide for Directors prepared by Nancy Houfek, for the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association (VASTA). This thesis documents my personal journey into the world of vocal coaching in five productions. Specifically, I explore the differences between vocal coaching in the university setting versus the professional theatre setting. I …

Entre El Público Y Poeta En Nueva York De Federico García Lorca, Francisco Acuyo Donaire

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Espectaculo Y Compromiso: Estrategias Vanguardistas En César Vallejo Y Carlos Oquendo De Amat, Damaris Puñales-Alpizar

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
