2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

Performance pioneer Robert Whitman is always at the vanguard of theater and art. With Swim, he creates an enchanting, thrillingly inventive new work that expands and heightens the theater experience by creating a rich environment of sound, movement, smells, and activities, in which the visual is only one part of the experience. According to Whitman, “an image, an object, a performer, or an action may not be seen, but it can be heard; it can be smelled; it can be perceived and felt; and in this shared experience the audience, sighted and blind, can be brought into a single community.”

Special Collections and College Archives at Musselman Library, Gettysburg College, regularly collaborates with various academic departments to conduct class visits utilizing the primary sources in Special Collections Reading Room. In the last two years, some of these opportunity have grown into semester long student curation experiences both inside Special Collections and in collaboration with Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College.

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

Narrative construction has an important and under-explored role to play in examining questions of power and privilege in P-12 classrooms or higher education courses in education and the humanities. In this paper, the authors utilize pedagogical deconstruction and reconstitution of stories about childhood play, examining how young people embody cultural narratives of power through their play. Through narrative construction, the authors envision utopian moments of resistant play, in which youth question old scenarios and imagine more equitable and examined possibilities for play. The production of this documentary has been extensive, and in the process the project was renamed “Ghosts on the Mountain.” The film examines the isolated lifestyle of H-­‐2A guest workers in the American West by subtly exploring the emotions that come with their occupation. The film’s subjects leave family and native lands to work in the US on H-­‐2A work visas, or no visas at all. Surrounded by breathtaking vistas, these workers find themselves in solitude and loneliness. This isolation is heightened by language barriers and the remoteness of the sheep’s pasture lands. It was the last week of classes of my first semester at BYU. Dr. Mary Farahnakian was showing us the study collection of historical clothing that was kept on campus for student use. Each piece held a story and I wanted to be a part of uncovering the story.

The purpose of my Orca project was to learn more about Fitzmaurice Voice technique directly from Katherine Fitzmaurice at one of her workshops in New York and use the techniques I learned to team-teach a Voice and Diction class for the Theatre and Media Arts Department. There are many ways that light is perceived, it can be seen, felt, measured, ignored, blocked, and directed. The project I successfully completed was a tangible experiment with light. I choreographed a dance for the BYU Ballet Showcase company called “Dancing in the Light”, the light of Christ. The experiment was within the experience of creating a dance that could carry a message of light, that through the dancers the audience could literally feel something being communicated to them. CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Reception of Mao's 'Talks at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art' in English-language Scholarship" Qilin Fu examines the three waves of the reception of Mao Zedong's 1942 text. Fu elaborates on the understandings of Mao's ideas about literature and art and discusses the changes depending on historical and political contexts. Fu argues that the changes are explicit or implicit representations of cultural politics ranging from an anti-communist criticism based on Cold War ideology to the concerns of literary theory and the cultural critique of discourse in the context of globalization.

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "About English-language Scholarship on Humor in Ancient Chinese Literature" Peina Zhuang and Lei Cheng present an overview of scholarship by English-language Sinologists on humor. Zhuang and Cheng argue that while English-language scholars have played a path-breaking role in making prominent an important aspect of ancient Chinese literature, their studies also display weaknesses including questionable choices of source material, decontextualized analysis, or even mistranslation. They posit that the study of humor in ancient Chinese literature ought to be performed in a contextual perspective including linguistics, literary history, society, politics, etc.
