This thesis analyzes the soundtrack to the 2021 game NieR: Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139…, examining its approach to character leitmotif and the centrality of the voice as an expressive and dramatic layer of the soundtrack. The NieR series has received considerable acclaim for its music, with 2017’s NieR: Automata gaining widespread critical and commercial success that has led to a wave of scholarly analysis of it. Poland and Chopin are two concepts that cannot be separated, for they form an entity of their own. However, the story of both subjects has often been manufactured to offer a view of the patriotism and the connection of Chopin with his country, which promoted the creation of the nation. At the same time, the circumstances that propitiated the rise of nationalism and the social unrest that ended with World War I were the same that promoted the myth of Chopin. This thesis is a series of three memoiristic essays around the vortex of identity. The first is an exploration of how childhood overmedication split the continuity of the author’s self-conception. The second traces the slipperiness of Jewish and Queer identifications detailing their synthesis in the klezmer revival in New York City in late 1980s and early 90s. The third is a polyphonic narration of the recovery of a lost klezmer’s life story in the face of the silence of time and slaughter.

This dissertation aims to explore the intersection of play and games in Western classical music and define a new category of pieces, “ludic pieces,” which contain play structures and game mechanics within their composition. Starting with surveying perspectives in ludology and ludomusicology, including those by Roger Caillois, Johan Huizinga, Jesper Juul, Katie Salen, and Eric Zimmerman, I will examine various definitions of a “game” and what its qualifying aspects are. Germanic Latin Lyric Diction: Regional Variations In Germany, Switzerland, And Austria, James A. Worley

In this dissertation, I discuss the various regional Latin lyric diction practices in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria and the extent to which Germanic Latin diction (also termed German Latin diction), Italianate Latin diction, and Roman Latin diction are performed beginning circa 1950 until 2022. I argue that Germanic Latin lyric diction is not standardized throughout Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. First, I explore Roman and Italianate lyric diction practices compared across various sources in order to distinguish between Latin pronunciation choices, then I discuss trends in Germanic Latin lyric diction “rules.” Extensive tables in appendices A (Roman Latin) and B (Germanic …

This dissertation explores the relationship between the metric practices of heavy metal and the elements and processes of the musical quality known as “groove.” Although heavy metal is not often expressly associated with groove per se, it occupies a historical position within the stylistic milieu for which groove music has established the primary, referential conditions. This craft essay examines the inspiration and creation of the song "Rearranging," which was written, recorded, and produced by Ryan Elliott in his home studio over the course of four months. The project's goal was to create a piece of music that challenged the songwriting conventions in modern popular music, while also exploring the fluidity of genre in modern music. The purpose of this article is to introduce collective musical cognition as a mode for developing diagnostic critical thinking in music at all levels of the educa-tional continuum–kindergarten through graduate school. It defines and illustrates how collective musical cognition is influenced by relevance, dialogue, and reflection as social and educational practices in the classroom. Relevance, dialogue, and reflection - the three components of collective musi-cal cognition–are critical social practices that transform music education pedagogy, whether practiced in the orchestral rehearsal room, the general music classroom, or the choral and band rehearsal rooms. This article is a memoir of the author’s experience studying music education at Teachers College Columbia University with Professor Lenore Pogonowski in the mid 1990s. The author completed four years of study at that institution earning an MA. Ed.M., and an Ed.D. He was also a teaching artist for the Creative Arts Laboratory, a US government funded program headed by Dr. Pogonowski, during that time. Professor Pogonowski had a profound impact on the author’s teaching practice during the ensuing decades. The influence of her work continues to reverberate throughout the field of music education, through the legacy of her impact on her students (Allsup, & Baxter, 2004; Greher, 2004; Robinson et al., 2011). Based on her work with the Manhattanville Music Curriculum Project (MMCP) there was an emphasis on 20th Century compositional techniques, the use of recorded and environmental sounds as well as the importance of free exploration.

The Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish colonies in South America in 1767, leaving behind a remarkable musical legacy that was buried for over two hundred years. But the music did not disappear completely. Thanks to the Chiquitos people of Bolivia, the music was played and preserved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1985, Swiss architect Hans Roth discovered 9,000 of these musical manuscripts and in 1990 UNESCO declared the churches of the Chiquitos a “patrimony of humanity”. Dr. Gustavo Leone of Loyola University Chicago's Department of Fine and Performing Arts has painstakingly retrieved and restored several of these …
