Douçaine Vivant: The Life, Death, And Resurrection Of A Cylindrical Survivor, Aage Bent Nielsen 2010 Boise State University

Douçaine Vivant: The Life, Death, And Resurrection Of A Cylindrical Survivor, Aage Bent Nielsen

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Thirty years ago, ocean archaeologists excavating the sunken wreck of the Tudor flagship the Mary Rose uncovered a “mystery instrument,” later revealed as the only extant douçaine. This exciting discovery catalyzed this work and a new career direction for the author. The douçaine is a cylindrical bored early double reed instrument mentioned frequently in literature and chronicles from the thirteenth to early seventeenth centuries. Unfortunately, none of the known references included a definitive description or iconographical depiction. Despite the emergence of the extant douçaine, relatively little scholarship exists on the instrument. Furthermore, only one contemporary instrument maker uses the extant …

The Effects Of Cultural Experience And Subdivision On Tapping To Slow Tempi, Sangeeta Ullal 2010 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The Effects Of Cultural Experience And Subdivision On Tapping To Slow Tempi, Sangeeta Ullal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Our ability to accurately synchronize with rhythmic patterns is constrained by two factors: temporal length and interval structure. By using strategies such as subdivision, we can improve synchronization accuracy at slow tempos, but our ability to utilize subdivisions is constrained by the nature of interval ratios contained in culture-specific subdivision types. Western music falls within a restricted temporal range and its metrical subdivisions contain simple ratios, but Indian music violates these constraints. The present study examines the effects of culture-specific experience on these constraints. American and Indian listeners were asked to perform synchronous tapping to a stimulus with a slow …

The Effect Of Free Movement On Preschool Students' Preference For And Recognition Of Classical Music, Emilee Keith Knell

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted in order to examine two questions: 1) Does free movement while listening to classical music influence a preschooler's preference for the music?; and 2) Does free movement while listening to classical music influence a preschooler's ability to answer recognition questions relative to the music? Subjects (N = 34) were 4- to 5-year-old students from two intact classrooms at the BYU Child and Family Studies Laboratory Preschool. After being involved in six lessons utilizing two different classical pieces, each identified by a prominent instrument and experienced either Actively (with free movement) or Passively (while sitting or lying …

Incidental Music: Enhancing The Emotional Experience Of The Audience, Kathleen B. Nelson, Daniel E. Nelson

Caesars Hospitality Research Summit

Environmental psychologists, who study transactions between individuals and their physical settings, maintain when an individual’s environment is changed, his/her behavior and experience are also changed by the environment (Gifford, 2002). Like other segments of the theatrical setting, a manipulation of the environment can enhance or constrain audience actions. Physical elements, as well as other ambient factors such as lighting, color, quality of materials, set design, music, fragrance, and room temperature are just a sample of the dramatic elements used to orchestrate the environment. However, this paper explores the relationship between the elements utilized to create enhanced experiences for the audience …

Mercy Mercy Me (The Media Ecology): Technology, Agency, And "Cleavage" Of The Musical Text, Arthur J. Bamford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores changes that occurred in popular music during the 1960s and early 1970s through case studies involving three significant albums released in 1971 and 1972: Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Sly and the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On, and Stevie Wonder's Talking Book. These albums deserve attention particularly because, as this thesis argues, existing research on the cultural significance of popular music has focused largely on the periods before or after the 1970s and research on music-making technologies has focused largely on white artists or groups from the late 1960s. Addressing this blind …

Touch Screen Sound Controller, James Fenley, Jonathan Law 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

By applying our method, a user may stream pulse-code modulated data from a server onto a client’s RAM via an Ethernet connection. A 32bit, 200MHz ARM9 microprocessor addresses data from the RAM and proceeds with executing DSP instructions from the user. The connection between the touch screen and the central microprocessor is …
