This research document explores teaching methods, career advice, and major influences that shaped the professional course of the violist Lynne Ramsey. Ramsey teaches viola at the Cleveland Institute of Music and is first assistant principal viola in the Cleveland Orchestra. For over thirty years, she has taught countless viola students in the US while maintaining a full-time performance career.

Experimental music is rarely taught in higher education music programs but it could nevertheless be useful for providing students a methodology through which to develop creativity. This document seeks to find common ground between the seemingly disparate worlds of classical music and experimental music in pursuit of revealing the usefulness of experimental music practice for musicians trained in the classical tradition. In seeming contrast to classical music, experimental music values include process, indeterminacy, and non-subjectivity. This document shows that these aspects, despite seeming exclusive to experimental music, are in fact integral to all music. This document will also discuss writings …

Cross-cultural musical synthesis plays an important role in the creation of musical progress in the twentieth century. This dissertation is a study on the development of the use of Chinese folk elements in Western-style compositions by Chinese composers. Through analyses of different compositions by traditional Chinese composers, Chen Gang and Chen GuoQuan, as well as Chinese-born American composer Bright Sheng, the aesthetic variations produced by the synthesis of Western and Eastern music is examined.

This thesis explores scholarship relevant to assembling a historically informed performance practice of Brahms’s three Violin Sonatas, Opp. 78, 100, and 108 in the nineteenth-century Germanic violin tradition of which, Joseph Joachim was its greatest proponent. This inquiry, which primarily examines surviving evidence of Joachim, his pedagogical ilk, and the circle of Brahms, engages with a variety of 19th and early 20th century Germanic musical and textual evidence, including nineteenth-century musical editions, correspondence and other archival materials, and early recorded performances to propose a historically informed style. This recital is divided into two parts; two pieces prior to intermission and three afterwards. The first two pieces From Jewish Life and Concerto for Bass Tuba have more traditional connotations. From Jewish Life is originally a cello piece and has been adapted for tuba. The Concerto for Bass Tuba is one of the most standard pieces in the tuba repertoire. For the purposes of this recital, both are accompanied by piano. The last three pieces are more contemporary and personal. Polka.com is a short, high-energy work for unaccompanied tuba. On November 15, 2013, Lara Wasserman, soprano, presented her graduate voice recital. In collaboration with Polina Khatsko on harpsichord and piano, and Megan Grey on cello, she performed works by Georg Frideric Handel, Richard Strauss, Claude Debussy, and Jake Heggie. The 53-minute program took place in Davis Hall in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. This abstract discusses musical and historical aspects of each selection in the order in which they were performed.

The recital is presented to demonstrate skills and facility on the rhythm section instruments as well as to provide opportunity for the recitalist to present original compositions and arrangements. Proficiency on rhythm section instruments is necessary in that it offers, among other things, an understanding of the technical components and how they relate to the application of musical concepts of performance and education.
