Soundboard: Planar Tracking For Instrument Control, Peter O'Sullivan
ENGS 86 Independent Projects (AB Students)
The Soundboard is the central component of Syrinx, a synthesizer instrument invented by Spencer Topel. A generated audio signal is transduced through the Soundboard, and by manually adjusting the positioning of its top metal plane, the user can manipulate the encased soundwaves before they are transduced back into a signal and output. My task for this project was to add controller functionality to the Soundboard component by implementing control voltages that carry information about its planar tilt, yaw, and altitude. These voltages can be used to modulate various digital parameters and further affect the sonic output of the instrument. Further, …

The JaK’D Modular Drum System (MDS) is a drum module that allows the customer to purchase a base module with a certain amount of ports and allows the option to purchase add-on modules to give more input ports as needed. With existing drum modules on the market, if one were to run out of input ports, they would have to buy an entirely new module that has room for the new devices. The JaK’D MDS negates this problem by introducing expandability to the drum module market. The front of the main module has an LCD screen with directional buttons to …

A Study Of Stambeli In Digital Media, Nneka Mogbo
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research paper explores stambeli, a traditional spiritual music in Tunisia, by understanding its musical and spiritual components then identifying ways it is presented in digital media. Stambeli is shaped by pre-Islamic West African animist beliefs, spiritual healing and trances. The genre arrived in Tunisia when sub-Saharan Africans arrived in the north through slavery, migration or trade from present-day countries like Mauritania, Mali and Chad. Today, it is a geographic and cultural intersection of sub-Saharan, North and West African influences.

The Anxious Musician: Coping Strategies Used To Combat Music Performance Anxiety, Abigail Lockhart
Senior Honors Theses
Music Performance Anxiety, or MPA, affects over 20% of musicians, regardless of age, experience, or nationality. MPA is a form of social anxiety that causes the performer great distress before and during a performance experience, often causing the performance to have a less favorable outcome. As this is such a common occurrence in the field of music, it is important for teachers and students alike to understand the basis of anxiety as well as how to deal with its effects. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution to conquer anxiety, but through the implementation of various coping strategies, musicians can have …

Douze Préludes- Poèmes, Op. 58 By Charles Tournemire: A Stylistic Analysis, Mengdi Li
Theses and Dissertations
Douze Préludes-Poèmes, Op. 58 is a composition for solo piano by French composer Charles Tournemire (1870-1939). The object of this study is to help musicians have a better understanding of Douze Préludes-Poèmes through a stylistic analysis of the work.
The study provides background and biographical information on Tournemire. It also traces influences from which the composer drew inspiration. Since Tournemire created a unique musical language for the work by combining the Melakarta ragas from Southern India with the French symbolist and impressionist styles, this study identifies each raga used in the set and provides information on structure, harmony, melody, tempo, …

Theses and Dissertations
Johannes Kapsberger (1580-1651) was an Italian composer of the early Baroque era. Known for his compositions for the lute, and chitarrone, Kapsberger was a talented composer who worked for great patrons like Francesco Barberini and Pope Urban VIII. Kapsberger published his only surviving lute works in 1611, which contained eight lute toccatas, twelve galliards and twelve courantes. Music produced for the lute during the renaissance and baroque eras are products of their time. Published lute music was written in tablature and relied heavily on the performance practices of its day. Today, trained lutenists have the skills and knowledge needed to …

In the past decade, there have been numerous new works written for the saxophone in a variety of styles, including pieces that utilize avant-garde and other contemporary techniques as well as traditionally tonal melodic and harmonic structures. This document explores five saxophone works composed by American composer Stacy Garrop and provides a brief analysis of Garrop’s compositional style. It examines how Garrop tells stories by using her own unique compositional style to make a connection with her audience and performers. Furthermore, this document includes a performance guide to help the saxophonist understand and master the techniques required to successfully perform …
