Silent Protest And The Art Of Paper Folding: The Golden Venture Paper Sculptures At The Museum Of Chinese In America, Sandra Cheng 2016 CUNY New York City College of Technology

Silent Protest And The Art Of Paper Folding: The Golden Venture Paper Sculptures At The Museum Of Chinese In America, Sandra Cheng

Publications and Research

Housed in the Museum of Chinese in America is the Fly to Freedom collection of paper art, which were produced by a traditional folk method of Chinese paper folding. The 123 paper works were created by detainees of the Golden Venture, a freighter used to smuggle undocumented immigrants into the U.S. On the evening of June 6, 1993, the ship ran aground off the Rockaways in New York City and nearly 300 migrants, gaunt from the four-month ordeal at sea, poured out of the cramped windowless hold of the vessel. Several drowned that night, a few escaped, but the majority …

How Hostile Was The Space Race? An Examination Of Soviet-American Antagonism And Cooperation In Space, Mitchell Mundorff 2016 University of Kentucky

How Hostile Was The Space Race? An Examination Of Soviet-American Antagonism And Cooperation In Space, Mitchell Mundorff

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

It is commonly accepted that the United States and the Soviet Union competed, and did not cooperate, with one and other between World War II and the collapse of the USSR in the early 1990s. This is problematic, due to several joint projects undertaken by the two nations during this period, and especially the Apollo-Soyuz Experimental Test Project. Analysis of contemporary and secondary sources shows that though there was a large degree of competition between these superpowers, the idea of working together was proposed several times before it became a reality. Once the nations decided to move forward with Apollo-Soyuz, …

America's National Cemeteries: A Resource Guide For College Instructors [Instructional Guide], Thomas G. Connors

Open Educational Resources

Developing a Tour of a National Cemetery

There are many ways to view or approach the study of a national cemetery. Each cemetery has a unique history but also fits some general patterns. The most obvious focus of study would be on the history of the cemetery itself or the lives of those commemorated there. Another approach would be through architecture and design, the style of the structures, or the layout of the grounds. A more scientific emphasis might focus on the landscape, its flora, and its wildlife, and investigate what life is supported among the manicured lawns. The geography …

Introduction To "Independent Stardom: Freelance Women In The Hollywood Studio System", Emily Carman 2016 Chapman University

Introduction To "Independent Stardom: Freelance Women In The Hollywood Studio System", Emily Carman

Film and Media Arts Faculty Books and Book Chapters

During the heyday of Hollywood’s studio system, stars were carefully cultivated and promoted, but at the price of their independence. This familiar narrative of Hollywood stardom receives a long-overdue shakeup in Emily Carman’s new book. Far from passive victims of coercive seven-year contracts, a number of classic Hollywood’s best-known actresses worked on a freelance basis within the restrictive studio system. In leveraging their stardom to play an active role in shaping their careers, female stars including Irene Dunne, Janet Gaynor, Miriam Hopkins, Carole Lombard, and Barbara Stanwyck challenged Hollywood’s patriarchal structure.

Through extensive, original archival research, Independent Stardom uncovers this …

Faith In War: The American Roots Of Global Conflict, Gregory A. Daddis 2016 Chapman University

Faith In War: The American Roots Of Global Conflict, Gregory A. Daddis

History Faculty Articles and Research

War has become a form of secular religion for many Americans in the modern era. Much of our deployment of military power during the last 50 years has rested on a set of absolute beliefs about the overall utility of war. In the process, policymakers and citizens alike maintain an enduring faith that the United States, via its military forces, has the power to transform societies abroad.

The History Of Inequality In Education And The Question Of Equality Versus Adequacy, Diana Carol Dominguez 2016 University of Central Florida

The History Of Inequality In Education And The Question Of Equality Versus Adequacy, Diana Carol Dominguez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Although the U.S. Constitution espouses equality, it clearly is not practiced in all aspects of life with education being a significant outlier. In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote about inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These two theories are related to education through educational adequacy and equality. Sufficientarianism, or educational adequacy, says that what is important is that everyone has “good enough” educational opportunities, but not the same ones. Egalitarianism, or educational equality, says that there is an intrinsic value in having the same educational opportunities and only having good enough opportunities misses something …

Manifest Imperialism: Race And American Imperial Aspirations In The Pacific, Bryan Richter 2016 Butler University

Manifest Imperialism: Race And American Imperial Aspirations In The Pacific, Bryan Richter

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The Pacific Ocean has long been held by the United States as an outlet to project power and to forge and international fiefdom for themselves. The historical precedence of military intervention in this portion of the globe can be traced back to the colonial conflicts in the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century. This conflict began a century of heavy American military involvement which saw the United States become entrenched in four major wars from the Philippines in the south to its northern most point in the Korea. However, in each of these wars there were more at …
