Profiles In Patriotism: Muslims And The Civil War, Jeffrey L. Lauck

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

While many minority groups have had their contributions and accomplishments during the Civil War recognized, one group of Americans has received little attention. Muslim Americans are rarely the focus of Civil War scholars and are typically viewed as a demographic relevant only to more modern history. This should not be the case. In fact, Muslim Americans have served in virtually every armed conflict in United States history and left their mark on every era, including the Civil War. A simple search using the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) reveals several names associated with Islam, including two Mahomets, two …

Right Here In River City: An Iowa Community At The Prairie School’S Edge [A Review By Klinkowitz Of Frank Lloyd Wright And Mason City: Architectural Heart Of The Prairie, By Roy R. Behrens], Jerome Klinkowitz

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Mason City, Iowa hosts the highest concentration of integrated Prairie School architecture in the world. Between 1908 and 1916 coherent groupings of commercial and residential buildings took their place on the quite literal Midwestern prairie as designed by the cream of the crop of young Chicago architects innovating in the direction first proposed by Louis Sullivan. On a corner of the downtown square Frank Lloyd Wright produced a three-part structure that wrapped around the intersection of two principal streets to house a bank, a hotel, and a connecting set of office and retail space. He tossed in a home for …

The East China Sea In Dod China Military Power Reports, Bert Chapman 2017 Purdue University

The East China Sea In Dod China Military Power Reports, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2000 saw Congress require the Department of Defense (DOD) to prepare an annual report on Chinese military power. This report contains classified and unclassified editions. Documenting Chinese military developments, strategy, and trends are critical parts of these reports. Beijing’s military activities in the East China Sea (ECS) are important report components. This work explains the importance of these and other DOD reports for those studying ECS developments, examines how DOD has documented Beijing’s military activities within these publicly accessible reports, and describes how members of Congress have reacted to ECS developments during the Obama …

The Cross-Border Consequences Of U.S. Deportation Policy And Immigration Enforcement, Laura D. Gutierrez 2017 University of the Pacific

The Cross-Border Consequences Of U.S. Deportation Policy And Immigration Enforcement, Laura D. Gutierrez

Distinguished Speaker Series

Despite statistics that illustrate how Mexican migration to the United States continues to decrease, politicians and voters continue to demand increased border enforcement, deportation of all undocumented migrants, and a wall to prevent Mexican migrants from entering the country without authorization. The disconnect between reality and rhetoric illustrates how Mexican migrants have become inextricably associated with illegality, crime and deportability although they have become central to how the U.S. economy operates. In an era of unprecedented deportations, Mexico has struggled to address the constant influxof deportees and return migrants. Based on research conducted in Mexico and the United States, Gutiérrez …

Dusting Off The Old Heroes Of The Republic: The Newest Civil Rights Movement In Washington, D.C., Matthew D. LaRoche 2017 Gettysburg College

Dusting Off The Old Heroes Of The Republic: The Newest Civil Rights Movement In Washington, D.C., Matthew D. Laroche

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

When I decided to attend the Women’s March on Washington this past January, I tried desperately to keep the Civil War out of my mind. I didn’t want to court disaster. Whatever their politics, anyone who knows anything about the Civil War can hear the familiar wails of a nation groaning under the weight of paralyzing political factionalism, deep sectional divides, and a potential constitutional crisis—in the works long before the Drumpf presidency—surrounding the proper limit and application of executive power in our democracy, amongst other threats. But I just couldn’t allow myself to envision the worst. It made me …

Commentary: California Secessionists Channel Logic Of Southern Slaveholders, Allen C. Guelzo, James H. Hulme

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

'Thursday night the streets were filled with excited crowds. No one talks of anything but the necessity for prompt action. . . . It is hardly prudent for any man to express his opinion adverse to immediate secession, so heated are the public passions, so intolerant of restraint is the popular will."

You would probably assume that this report came from California in the wake of the 2016 election, right? After all, Alex Padilla, the California secretary of state, has now authorized the Yes California Independence Campaign to begin collecting signatures for a state referendum on California's secession from the …
