“Be Carefully Taught”: African Americans In Adams County In The 20th Century, Jennifer A. Simone
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Every year over a million visitors flood Adams County, Pennsylvania to tour the famous, or rather infamous, site of the Battle of Gettysburg. While most visitors primarily come to Gettysburg to learn about the battle, many leave with understandings of the unending impact of the Civil War on race relations. However, for a town that sparks such a progressive mentality in some, Adams County, and specifically Gettysburg, is often criticized for being ‘frozen in time,’ unwilling to keep up with progressive race relations after the battle ended. A panel entitled “Black Experiences in Adams County in the 19th & 20th …

Andrew Jackson And The Indian Removal Act Of 1830 Personal Agenda Or Territorial Expansion, Austin Valentine
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
For well over a century, historians have pondered Andrew Jackson’s motivation behind the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Was Andrew Jackson’s decision for a massive social cleansing of Native Americans motivated by a personal agenda or by American calls for westward expansion?

With such, I hope to give the reader a better understanding of Jackson’s attitude, military strategies, calls for …

Literary Societies Of Wofford College, Phillip Stone, Luke Meagher
Library Exhibits
Less than two months after Wofford College opened, on Aug. 1, 1854, eight students met to organize a literary society. Their primary purpose was to practice their skills in debating, oratory, parliamentary procedure and writing, all of which were important skills for college students to develop.
As the college grew, so did the number of societies, with a second one being organized in 1858, a third in 1905 and a fourth in 1920. Over the college’s first century, the literary societies were integral to student life, and they made many lasting contributions. The oldest societies established libraries, began building the …
