Ronald Reagan, Jesse Unruh And The California Gubernatorial Race, 1970, Alice L. Alvarado
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
This essay examines the 1970 gubernatorial race in California between incumbent Ronald Reagan and powerful California legislator Jesse Unruh. Most of the scholarship on this particular subject tends to revolve around Reagan's first campaign for governor, but neglects his re-election campaign. Although Unruh would lose the campaign, he narrowed Reagan's win significantly. This study examines the candidates themselves, the issues facing California at the time, strategies used by each camp, and possible reasons why voters strayed from Reagan to the Unruh camp, and the final outcome of the race.

The United States' Nuclear Testing Program In The Marshall Islands, Deborah Herota
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
From 1946 to 1958, the United States conducted top secret nuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands that affects its people and its ecology to this day. The United States has done an injustice to the people of the Marshall Islands by forcing them off their native lands in order to procure testing sites, by knowingly exposing the people to radiation from these tests, by withholding information from the people who are most affected by the testing, and by not restoring the people to their health and to their lands. To date, the United States maintains a presence on the …

‘Answering The Call’: Ange. V. Milner And Posters From The ‘Great War’, Angela L. Bonnell
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Illinois State University’s Milner Library is one of the few libraries in the nation possessing original posters produced during the First World War. It owes this distinction to the University’s first librarian, Angeline (known as Ange.) Vernon Milner. Milner preserved these posters after the war’s end, despite their original intent for a short-term, wartime-only purpose. As ephemera they were produced and distributed for public display and then meant to be discarded following the war. Milner preserved the posters recognizing their strong visual impact and value in illustrating a campus during wartime. Today these posters constitute the Answering the Call World …

Mackinder And The Arctic's Emerging Geopolitics: Recommendations For The U.S. And Its Nato Allies, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
This presentation shows how Halford Mackinder (1861-1947) described Canada and the Arctic region in his geopolitical writings. It goes on to stress how the Arctic is becoming increasingly important in international geopolitical policymaking due to its significant oil and natural gas resources, how warming temperatures are increasing international access to its waters, and the how countries as diverse as Canada, China, Russia, and the U.S. see the Arctic region in their strategic policymaking. It concludes by stressing that the Arctic can no longer be viewed as a region immune from international conflict and presents recommendations for the U.S. and its …

This collection of essays illustrates that a material culture approach to the past can help us better understand some of the deeper complexities of the Civil War era, such as the expansion of consumer culture, the common soldier’s experience, and behavioral history, as well as issues of race, bondage, and emancipation. Cashin argues that it is important to study the objects featured within the book to understand their multi-valenced roles in the daily lives of 19th-century Americans, as well as the cultural and emotional significance they held for those who utilized them. From Robert Hicks’s essay on vaccinating the Confederate …
