Most relates to Muir’s interest in John Rowan and his Bardstown, Kentucky home Federal Hill, and to Stephen Foster’s association with the property, thought to have been the inspiration for his song “My Old Kentucky Home.” Muir brings sources on Rowan to the attention of WKU faculty member Frances Richards, the author of a master’s thesis on Rowan. Also includes Muir’s correspondence with J. Winston Coleman regarding the Rowan-Chambers duel, and letters about his family and travel.

Richards, Franklin, Kentucky, enclosing a copy of a speech Logan delivered to the Kentucky General Assembly in response to Governor Bert Combs’s recent message on the state of the Commonwealth. Though both are Democrats, Logan criticizes Combs’s administration for its broken campaign promises and failure to respect the independence of the legislative branch.

The symbolic concept of separation between church and state defines the relationship between government and religion. While Jefferson did not author the phrase, the third President of the United States promoted the philosophy of a wall of separation between church and state in his letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802. Jefferson’s support for a wall of separation stemmed from a strong belief in liberty of conscience and relied heavily upon the conviction to protect religious liberty. Through an analysis on the contextual history of the phrase, the original intent and application of separation of church and state becomes evident. …

In the 1930’s there was growing concerns over a disease known as syphilis. With 300,000 new cases each year, coupled with the disease’s ability to create blindness, arthritis, heart disease and instances of premature death, the search for a way to stop the epidemic quickly was expanding. With such numbers the United States Department of Health needed answers fast (DiIanni 1993).

Letter, 14 December 1862, of George Messer, 107th Illinois Infantry, to his wife Lottie in Clinton, Illinois. He describes the march to camp near Munfordville, Kentucky, the layout of the camp, and nearby graves, the result of an earlier engagement. He outlines the position of other troops in the area and lists the names of several men who have deserted from his company. He makes some critical remarks about his father at home and expresses confidence in Lottie’s ability to manage his domestic affairs.
