Florida Historical Quarterly

The journal of Lieutenant Robert C. Buchanan, adjutant of the Fourth Infantry, contains the chronicle of the operations of a unit in the campaign against the Seminole Indians from November 1837 to January 1838. Written during the pursuit of the Seminole Indians along the Kissimmee river and Lake Okeechobee, the journal reveals the conditions under which the soldiers lived and fought, his description of the country, and his views on the Seminoles and the war. There is also a description of the famous battle at Lake Okeechobee on December 25, 1837, for which action Buchanan received a citation.

Union Nationalism In Florida, Herbert J. Doherty Jr. 2021 University of Central Florida

Union Nationalism In Florida, Herbert J. Doherty Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Much has been written about the secession movement in the South, about the fire-eaters, the defenders of state rights, the evolution of theories to protect minority property rights, and the development of that sectionalism which is sometimes termed “Southern nationalism.” Less is heard about Southern defenders of the Union-men who conceived of their national loyalty as devotion to the federal union rather than to a section. These latter men, it is true, were in a minority in the South, but they were usually men of wealth and position who were able to make their views known if not popular.

Florida Historical Society: The Annual Meeting, Florida Historical Society

Florida Historical Quarterly

On invitation of the University of Florida our annual meeting of 1950 was held in the Florida Union Auditorium on the campus there, April 14 and 15. It was successful in every way, with a large attendance from various parts of the State. There were three program sessions with papers written for presentation there, a luncheon, and the annual dinner.

Local historical societies in Florida can together accomplish much more towards the preservation of our State’s history than can the Florida Historical Society provided other societies are established in those areas where there are none now. Hence a major purpose of our Society should be and is cordial encouragement of them. Our members will recall the list of those societies in Florida which are active and inactive appended to the printed program of our last annual meeting. This shows that the number of active societies is larger now than at any time in the past. But the organization of other …

A Free Negro Purchases His Daughter, Herbert J. Doherty Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Many interesting sidelights to Southern history are to be found in the documents comprising the Richard Keith Call collection in the Florida Historical Society Library. Certain letters addressed to Call give us new and intriguing views of life in the old South. Here are two letters addressed to Call from Canada by a free Negro. We know very little about these letters or the circumstances surrounding them; as Call’s side of the correspondence is not preserved in the collection, nor is there any reference to the matter nor the persons in any other documents of the collection which this writer …

The Federal Campaign Of 1864 In East Florida, Mark F. Boyd 2021 University of Central Florida

The Federal Campaign Of 1864 In East Florida, Mark F. Boyd

Florida Historical Quarterly

At this distance in time from the events of 1864 it is not possible to prepare a satisfactorily complete picture of the 1864 Federal campaign in East Florida. Basic for such a study is the extended series of orders and reports of Federal and Confederate general officers and unit commanders preserved in the War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Series I, Volume XXXV, Parts 1 and 2,1891 (page numbers in these volumes are hereafter cited in parentheses). A careful consideration of these leads to the conclusion that many gaps exist in the series.

Provincializing New York: In And Out Of The Geopolitics Of Art After 1945, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

In this article, I argue that the putative global centrality of New York in art after 1945 is a construct, as it is for Paris prior to 1945. Monographs and national approaches are unsuccessful in challenging such powerful myths as these. A global, transnational and comparative approach demonstrates that the struggle for centrality was a global phenomenon after 1945, a battle that New York does not win (depending on one’s point of view) until after 1964. Rather than considering centres and peripheries as a fixed category, I propose to consider them as a strategic notion which artists and their promoters …

The Tide Is Coming In: Fort Pulaski's Historical Relationship With Water, Sadie Ingram 2021 Georgia Southern University

The Tide Is Coming In: Fort Pulaski's Historical Relationship With Water, Sadie Ingram

Honors College Theses

Savannah, Georgia is the fourth busiest port in the United States, processing approximately 4.35 million standard shipping containers every year. The port’s protector Fort Pulaski towers among the coastal marshlands and estuaries of the Savannah River. Located on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River, this strategic location allowed the fort to protect Savannah’s vital harbor. Built as part of the United States’ Third System plan to build fortifications along the eastern seaboard, construction of Fort Pulaski began in 1827 and finished twenty years later.

Water has played a pivotal role in the history of Fort Pulaski and …
