The Middle Florida cotton plantation region that centered in Tallahassee had good reason in the spring of 1864 to fear an attack by Federal forces despite the impressive Confederate victory at the Battle of Olustee on February 20. After this bloody engagement Union troops retreated to Jacksonville, and pursuing Confederates stopped twelve miles short of the city at McGirt's Creek. They dug in there, and for months there was a standoff. Florida’s long and poorly defended shoreline provided abundant other opportunities for a Federal assault, however. Mutual Aid Societies were an integral part of the lifestyle of nineteenth-century American blacks. These precursors of contemporary insurance companies provided financial assistance to members in time of sickness and crisis and paid the burial costs of the departed member. Societies were founded in the East and throughout the South, both in rural and urban communities. Many of these societies— or burial clubs, as they are commonly called— continue to exist.

In September 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain sought out and attacked the Huguenot French in their Florida settlement. When his victory was won, a number of men, women, and children had become captives of the Spanish, while at least two Spaniards were prisoners in the hands of the French. Some of these people possessed noble blood; most were common sailors and soldiers. A few gained a degree of notoriety from their experiences– at least one of the captives was received at the court of Philip II of Spain, while another appeared before the Queen Mother of France. Includes data on scoured and unscoured jeans manufactured in 1874. Some data is incomplete due to damaged and mutilated pages. Also includes historical notes on the business collected in 1955 by WKU librarian Elizabeth Coombs.

Dietz #39 Standard Lantern, circa. 1906. The Dietz #39 Standard came in a number of different styles among those was the "Vulcan" model which were manufactured without a bellbottom base like that of the "Empire" and "Vesta" models of lanterns. The "Vulcan" featured both twist off and insertion fuel founts, later models featured a flat top. It is estimated that production of this model ended in the 1950's

Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Lantern. This artifact is of unknown use and origin. The body of the container seems to act as a font leading up to a cloth end with scorch marks, on the base of the artifact is a stamp spelling C&O RY. One speculation for the use for the artifact is that it may have served as a tunnel torch for lighting tunnels.

Embury No.2 Air Pilot Lantern, circa. 1939-1953. The maker's marks on each side of the tank read as follows: "Embury No. 2 Air Pilot" and Embury MFG. Co, Warsaw, NY USA. The "Air Pilot" line of lanterns was introduced in 1939 to replace the "Supreme" model of lantern.

The "Embury Manufacturing Company" was incorporated on November 27, 1908 and located at 189 Platt Street, Rochester, NY. The company later sold to the R. E. Dietz Manufacturing Company in 1953.

Handlan Kerosene Signal Lantern, circa. 1930's-1940's. Lantern features a steel cage with the Handlan manufacturing stamp on the top and bottom of the lantern. Stamped on the brim of the cap and on the globe are the letters MOPAC which signals the use of this lantern by the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

Since the founding of the United States, African Americans have sacrificed their lives to uphold the nation’s democratic ideals, all while being denied equal access to voting, education, employment, and housing rights at home. Military service appealed to many African Americans who hoped it would lead to social and economic advancement for themselves and their race. Despite African American military participation throughout the nation’s history, these soldiers were treated as outsiders through segregated units and often relegated to non-combative duties, until the Vietnam War. This was the first major conflict in which African Americans had been deployed in large numbers …

This article analyzes the EPA within the broader history of federally-sponsored residential segregation, as well as the criminalization of and disinvestment from urban areas contemporaneous with the agency’s founding. It offers a detailed analysis of EPA’s first decade of recalcitrance regarding its own obligations under Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Title VII of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. The EPA developed a pattern of responding to scrutiny by rearranging its internal office structure and launching new initiatives tangential to the substantive issues of civil rights. Through this detailed interpretation, the article demonstrates how EPA’s first ten …
