During the mid to late 1950s, Hoxie and Little Rock were Arkansas communities that experienced social unrest and violence when their public schools began to desegregate. White Citizens' Council of Arkansas and White America Incorporated were segregationist groups they attempted to prevent integration at Hoxie but failed because their leaders publicly asked local citizens to resort to violence to stop desegregation of local classrooms. The Capital Citizens' Council and the Mothers' League were anti-integrationist organizations in Little Rock that adapted from the mistakes committed at Hoxie. This thesis examines the life and career of Benjamin T. Laney, Jr., the thirty-third governor of Arkansas, who, in full embrace of his conservative affiliation, left a progressive legislative legacy to the State of Arkansas. Little has been written about Laney, and this study attempts a comprehensive exploration of his political career, the legislative accomplishments of his administration, his involvement with the Dixiecrat movement in 1948, and career as a former governor. Using Laney's papers, including letters, speeches, and news clippings, this study also seeks to answer why Laney never fully committed to the Dixiecrat movement, a moniker that impacted …

In his 1978 memoirs, President Nixon claimed, “By using diplomatic signals and behind-the-scenes pressures we had been able to save West Pakistan from the imminent threat of Indian aggression and domination. We had also once again avoided a major confrontation with the Soviet Union.”[1] Kissinger’s far more detailed chapter on “the tilt,” in the first volume of his memoirs, White House Years, complements and largely corroborates Nixon’s. Correspondence, chiefly between brothers, Francis Marion Wade, Russell County, Kentucky, and Cyrenius Wade while the later was attending school in Elkton, Todd County, Kentucky. The letters contain comments about the school, the town of Elkton, and courting. Numerous receipts for the brothers as well as the Thomas family of Russell County are also included. The letters were typescripted and annotated by Marion Lee Adams.

Typescript of a diary kept by Joseph Rogers Underwood, 1834-1850, in which he records everyday occurrences at home in Bowling Green, Kentucky and in Washington, D.C., where he served in the U.S. House of Representatives,1835-1843, and the U.S. Senate, 1847-1853. Interspersed throughout are comments by his second wife, Elizabeth (Cox) Underwood. Also includes a document containing information about Thomas Rogers and an “Account of the Escape of Prisoners from Fort Warren, Boston Harbor” written by Douglas Gordon.
