After the Civil War, Charles Sumner said of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, "hand him over to the avenging pen of history." But has history been so been so avenging to Lee? In "The Forgotten Sins of Robert E. Lee: How a Confederate Icon Became an American Icon," this thesis argues that textbooks, public memory, and popular culture have collectively obscured the historical reality of Lee. In the years following the Civil War, the complex and tangled history of Lee as a slaveholding southerner were overlooked and, in many instances, erased in an effort to reunify North and South. In …

In 2018 Exploring Rockingham’s Past (ERP) launched. ERP is an online repository created to house local records from the Rockingham County, Virginia circuit court. Just a little over a year before its launch, Clerk of the Court, Chaz Haywood entreated facility and graduate students within the history department of James Madison University to help develop community access to the records housed within his institution. Sadly, over the decades the records of the courthouse had fallen into disarray, rendering them useless. From early contact between hunter-gatherer tribes, through the Middle Ages and to even modern times, societies in conflict would frequently engage in the intimidation tactic of severing the heads of their rivals and placing them upon spikes or poles. More than a means to warn away those who came upon it, these displays would exhibit the power and superiority of one tribe over the other. Racial prejudice against African Americans has been the leading cause of high incarceration rates amongst the African American community. Within the United States, the census reported that African Americans make up about 17.9 percent of the population, with one-third of the people making up the incarcerated population in America. The disparity in those numbers highlights the current situation that is plaguing the nation. Blatant cases of racial profiling that have received media attention are a true testament of the broken law enforcement system from coast to coast. A regularly overlooked but vital element of Cache Valley history is the impact of aviation. Just eight short years after the Wright Brothers achieved manned flight, the first aircraft arrived in Logan to perform for the masses eager to catch a glimpse of this burgeoning technology. From that point on, aviation has been a relevant topic to community leaders and members. This fervor for all things flight-related has been coined “airmindedness.”

To bring the discussion of airmindedness to the forefront, I created a traveling exhibit that could be used throughout the community to shed light on both the vibrant history …

The area of East Tennessee that lies between the Appalachian and Cumberland Mountains is called the Cumberland Plateau. This area reaches from Chattanooga to Bristol. Many people not from this region label it as redneck, back-woods, or hillbilly. Many don’t consider it to be a place that holds modern values, such as conservation and education. Through archival research, I will study this area during the Great Depression to explore how this place’s reality is different.
