John Pelham Informational Materials: Finding Aid, Bethany Latham

CSA Maj. John Pelham (1838-1863) was born in Alexandria, Alabama, and attended West Point military academy, which he was forced to leave in 1861 when the Civil War broke out. He reported for duty in the Confederate forces and was commissioned a first lieutenant, first being put in charge of ordnance, and later quickly gaining fame as commander of artillery. He was dubbed “the Gallant Pelham” by Robert E. Lee for his valor at Sharpsburg and achieved the field rank of major before his death at Kelly’s Ford, Virginia. He is buried in Jacksonville Cemetery, and a monument consisting of …

Anna Catherine “Kay” Kelly Gregg was born in 1920 in Dawson, West Virginia, to Aldridge James Kelly and Mary Leah Lowry. She was raised in Huntington, West Virginia, alongside her four siblings: James Thompson Kelly, Franklin C. Kelly, Bonna Kelly Paul, and Jeanette W. Kelly Scheerer. Kay enrolled at Marshall College in 1940 and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Teachers College on September 12, 1944.

The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski

This paper argues that the mode and historical context in which piracy ascended in the Caribbean after the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as the historical interrelation between maritime technology and pirate tactics, coalesced into a diachronic Damocles Sword that resulted in the downfall of piracy in the Golden Age. Sanctioning piratical enterprises as a subconventional maritime strategy displayed a geopolitical reliance on piracy by great powers. However, the depraved treatment conventional sailors received across all major European navies generated a social stratum that eventually bore the Golden Age of Piracy, while simultaneously contributing significantly to British naval …
